R-Type is a linear shooter. Each stage must be completed in order. There are no warps or branching paths. A boss must be defeated in order to complete each stage and advance to the next one.
There are restart points on level 1,2,4,5,6 and 7. You cannot continue from the level 7 restart unless you are using cheats such as autofire and even so it is very difficult.
The game has 2 loops. Complete loop 1 and you restart the game without your force and it runs faster with more difficult enemies. Complete loop 2 and you are greeted with a game over screen and the game ends.
