Controls[edit | edit source]

  • Joystick: Use the 2-way joystick to make Ptolemy walk left and right; if she walks off a platform, she'll fall down to the next one below, or the ground.
  • Spell Button: Use this button to make Ptolemy cast a spell at an enemy (to turn them into a cake); she will then either have to push it off the edge of a platform before it turns back into the enemy or cast a few more spells at it to kill it. However, you will only receive 100 points for killing an enemy by casting a few more spells at it after turning it into a cake, as opposed to the point values displayed below for pushing them off the edge of a platform.
  • Jump Button: Use this button to make Ptolemy jump; she cannot jump on any of the enemies to kill them (but she will not get "bubbled" if she lands on their heads, so can ride around on top of them and use them to reach platforms that she cannot otherwise), so you should remember these facts.
  • 1 or 2 Player Buttons: Push these buttons to begin a 1 or 2 player game.

Characters[edit | edit source]

Ptolemy[edit | edit source]

Ptolemy, a young witch and the third princess of the Alfalfa Kingdom, is the protagonist of this game; at the start of each round, she will fly into view from the right side of the screen on a broomstick, then get off it, as the various enemies of that particular round appear in their respective starting positions, and the text "READY!" appears in the centre of the screen. The broomstick will then fly away, as the enemies start moving - and you shall then have to use the 2-way joystick and the two buttons to make her cast spells at them (which shall turn them into cakes), then push them off the edges of the platforms to kill them, and jump (however, she can only jump the height of four blocks). If a falling cake should crush any additional enemies beneath it, you'll earn more points for their deaths (you shall even earn the points for the deaths of cakes forced off the edges of the platforms by other enemies) and may even cause coins to appear; however, if any enemy touches Ptolemy (unless she lands on their heads), a bubble will appear around her, and she shall fly up off the top of the screen, costing her a life. She will also receive an extra life at 30000 and 100000 points by default - and after every seventh round, you'll be treated to a cutscene of her riding an enormous blue wingless dragon, named Rodemy. After a preset amount of time on each round, which varies from one to the next, the sun shall appear in the sky and all enemies currently on the screen will be turned into cakes, which shall leave bronze (1000 x 1-9 points), silver (2000 x 1-9 points), or gold (4000 x 1-9 points) coins behind when killed, based on what they were before; however, just as when you take too long over pushing them off platforms normally, they shall eventually revert to their original forms.

The Wizards can also cast their own spells on Ptolemy (which will not "bubble" her, but shrink her for a short period of time), while the Salamanders can breathe fire at her (which is indicated by the three spikes on their heads flashing white), the Wraiths look like the Mightas from Chack'n Pop (1983), and can disappear and reappear at will, and the Clerics can duplicate themselves; the Worms can also grab Ptolemy (and other enemies) with their tongues and later reappeared in Don Doko Don (1989). Also, if Ptolemy takes too long over clearing any round, a flying representation of Satan with green wings known as Horned will appear - and he can not be killed, only avoided. You'll also need one of the Wizards to cast a spell on Ptolemy on Round 90 if you want to be able to finish the infamous Round 95 (unless a Feather appears on Rounds 93 or 94, for it shall warp you to Round 96 or 97 when collected).

Powerups[edit | edit source]

Once per round, a randomly-generated powerup will appear in a preset position on the screen; they are all worth 1000 points, but some are worth more:

Powerup Name Effect
Magic Staff The Magic Staff shall slow down all remaining enemies on the round for a short period of time (but they can still kill Ptolemy).
Holy Water The Holy Water doesn't appear to be worth anything more than those 1000 extra points that the player will gain for collecting it.
Silver Sceptre The Silver Sceptre gives Ptolemy the power to cast her spells further for a short period of time, which is indicated by her glowing.
Scroll of Fire The Scroll of Fire gives Ptolemy the power to cast foe-killing fireballs instead of her usual spells for a short period of time.
Scroll of Ice The Scroll of Ice shall immediately freeze all the remaining enemies on the round in ice blocks for a short period of time.
Gold Sceptre The Gold Sceptre will grant Ptolemy the ability to kill off the enemies instantly with her usual spells for a short period of time.
Mystical Orb The Mystical Orb shall cause Ptolemy to gain 60 extra points for every step she takes, for a short period of time.
Glass Potion The Glass Potion causes Ptolemy to become invisible and invulnerable for a short period of time, shown by her flashing.
Change Potion The Change Potion turns Ptolemy into a red mouse with the ability to kill any enemy she touches for a short period of time.
Moon Tiara The Moon Tiara shall immediately cause the sun to appear (regardless of how much time has passed on the round).
Star Tiara The Star Tiara will cause a shower of stars to rain down from the top of the screen, and kill all remaining enemies.
Book of Death The Book of Death shall cause a second-long earthquake that will immediately kill all the remaining enemies on the round.
Book of Life The Book of Life shall cause all the remaining enemies on the round to immediately die after a certain amount of time; furthermore, unlike any of the other powerups in this game, Ptolemy will also receive an extra life when she collects it.
Crystal Ring The Crystal Ring doesn't appear to be worth anything more than the 1000 extra points that the player will gain for collecting it.
Mystical Feather The Mystical Feather skips Ptolemy forward three rounds (if she skips one that has a cutscene after it, it shall be speeded up).

Dracolisk[edit | edit source]

This enormous magenta-coloured cross between a dragon and a basilisk appears on the 101st (and final) round; he attacks by spitting fireballs at Ptolemy (which are just as "bubbly" to her as any kind of touches from him). His belly is his only vulnerable point - and once Ptolemy has cast thirteen spells on him, he will transform into an enormous cake, collapse and leave a large colour-changing diamond behind. Ptolemy shall then start jumping for joy (if she happened to be standing on one of the round's three platforms, she will also fall to the ground and walk over to the diamond, and continue to jump) as the text "BONUS! 1000000'" appears on the screen; the screen will then go black as the ending text CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED 101 QUESTS AND NOW THE DIAMOND IS IN YOUR HAND. IT SHALL BRING PEACE TO THE KINGDOM AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR BRAVE ACT. appears on it (however, that number will not be entirely true if you have collected any Feathers during the course of the game, for each one that you collected will have skipped Ptolemy forward three rounds).
