Welcome to StrategyWiki![edit]

Hello Danneal12! Welcome to StrategyWiki. Thank you for your contributions. If you have any questions, just contact a sysop through their talk page or post on the staff lounge, and they'd be happy to help. If you need help editing, check the StrategyWiki Guide or ask a sysop, we're usually around. On the other hand, if you have ideas for StrategyWiki, bring them up on the forums. To keep up-to-date with the goings on of the wiki, consider adding the noticeboard to your watchlist.

Please remember to sign your name when leaving comments on talk pages by clicking Wikisigbutton.png or using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Feel free to delete this message from your talk page if you like, or keep it for reference. Happy editing! — Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:34, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Danneal, I also wanted to extend a welcome. I saw some of the formatting ideas that you are looking to apply to the Pokemon guides, and I think they look fantastic. I know that you are particular to the GBA versions of the series, but I definitely invite you to take a look at the RBY and GSC guides, and see if you would like to improve/standardize the formatting there as well. I'm currently going through GSC in an effort to fill out and complete the guide content, but I have been leaving the formatting until I take a second pass through the guide. Any assistance would be appreciated tremendously. Procyon 00:31, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
Hello! I saw that you asked Halosonic (talk · contribs) a question. He has not been active on here for over a year. In most cases, wiki content becomes "inactive" after a week or two. Feel free to leave messages, but keep on eye on them. You can go to any user page or user's talk page, then on the left look for "User contributions" and it will take you to a link like http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Halosonic. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 05:12, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Filename fixes[edit]

The six images have been renamed. Thank you for the correction! Also, when adding categories, please add them one per line (instead of all on the same line) to make them easier to read and modify. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:43, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Image categorisation[edit]

When uploading images, please make sure to categorise them using the correct image categories and the guide-specific category, i.e. [[Category:Game Name images]]. Please see our image policy for more details. Thanks for helping to keep our images neat! — Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:43, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Reverting Edits[edit]

Why are you reverting back my edit? I try to rearrange it so to avoid scrolling down too much, but you make it too long this way. Maxie is the same in Ruby and Emerald, so i merged them together, but you seperate them, when both is the exact same? I don't understand, please explain. Paco (talk) 18:30, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Paco, the only reason i keep changing it is that attempting to put all the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald into a 3 column arrangement means the trainer boxes overlap. This may not seem a problem to everyone but, in my opinion, it looks a bit messy and cramped. It may well reduce scrolling, i agree, and so my previous attempt aimed at condensing each version's details into smaller columns within themselves. Also, i agree that Maxie may be the same in both versions, but merging the boxes does not make it easier to use for others and i think it would be easier if they were left separate. I understand this is all a matter of opinion, but i think clarity to the audience is more important than slightly reducing the scrolling - people would much rather it be clear and easily understood than smaller on their screens. Thanks, --Danneal12 (talk) 21:09, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Danneal, we format our pages for larger resolutions. The reason they overlap is more of a problem with the template, which we should modify. Also, if you go to Preferences, Skins, and change to Monobook, you will have more width on the screen to view pages in. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 02:00, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
But would it not make more sense to make the pages look correct in the default style as this is what most users and all visitors will see?? I am looking at the Template now in an attempt to slightly resize it but i don't want to change anything until i'm sure it's correct (as it will knock on throughout the whole of Pokemon RSE and FRLG pages)... --Danneal12 (talk) 08:32, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
overlap? Where? I checked with all Skins, but nowhere are the boxes overlapping. Although with Dolphin the boxes are very closely to each other, but they're not overlapping (al last to me). I think the Text "Ruby and Emerald" make it quite easy to understand what versions this Trainer is for. The Color also mark the difference from other boxes. Paco (talk) 08:53, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
I didn't need to edit the Template itself as it already has a width parameter built in: |width=280px. Setting the Trainer profiles to 280px means all the boxes do not overlap and are arranged neatly into columns. Paco, my apologies for continually changing the page - i have just now changed the coding with the Trainer boxes so they are smaller, but previously they were overlapping and obscuring some words. Thanks,--Danneal12 (talk) 08:57, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Danneal's reasoning here. The composition of a page should be targeted to the default look of the site, and tweaked with respect to other skins such that they look good in other skins as well, but do not break the look of the page on the default skin. I understand power-user's preferences to use skins they are comfortable with, but it's important to remember that approx. 99% of the visitors to this site view it through the dolphin skin, so that is what I hope people are prioritizing. Procyon 14:11, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

It's ok, i've sorted the boxes now by using the |width=280px parameter - this has sufficiently reduced the borders so that 3 columns is fine in the Dolphin skin. --Danneal12 (talk) 14:53, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Do not abbreviate[edit]

this diff is not wanted. We accomodate new readers and people who forgot what the abbreviations are. It is better to expand and use links to help people find what you mean. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 02:00, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, just so that you understand, while some of the reading audience may be familiar with your terminology, others may not. Always try to tailor your edits towards to people who know much less about your subject than you do. The experts will immediately understand, and there won't be any opportunity for ambiguity for new players. Thanks! Procyon 02:28, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Two other points:
  1. If you want to shorten the description, but make it accurate and useful, the best thing is to just use "[[Game Name]] sprite." (without quotes). That identifies where it is from, so editors can look up and verify the context of its use, as well as the type of image it is, in case people care about the image type or have trouble identifying it. Another form that works is "From [[Game Name]]" (without quotes).
  2. Do not put categories on the same line as it is hard to read. Thank you! --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 05:41, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, i went through all the RSE sprites in the game, changing their descriptions, and added them to the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire images Category. I also have a list of which sprites are to be added - this was my next job. I will try to remember both points when uploading them. Apologies again. --Danneal12 (talk) 08:40, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

No problem! Thanks for helping and choosing to work with us instead of against us. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:57, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Use File: not Image:[edit]

Image: is deprecated, meaning it has been superceded by File:. Although it works, file saves HDD space and it saves a keystroke when typing. Thanks, --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:57, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
