Box Art / Manual Scans[edit]

If anyone has any of the original Box Art for any games of Space Quest and Lesiure Suit Larry Series could you please upload it here? Those are the first few guides that I wish to finish up, and I really think that watermarks and whatnot would look unprofessional here. Similarly, if anyone has scans of the game manuals that are free to use, I'd appreciate that as well.

I found a bunch of Space Quest boxart pics....not that high quality, but not watermarked, either. Check it out:

Feel free to use them in your articles. Just one thing I noticed, the box art seems to be designed in two distinct, different styles, both existing for each game....it could be left as is, or would you prefer only one style for continuity? Gerrec 21:13, 18 June 2006 (PDT)

Editing tips[edit]

Hi. Nice work on the Space Quest III guide, but I feel compelled to point out a few things I think will help improve your future edits. If you take a look at this diff, you'll see that you can use the {{-}} template to force the following content to be past floated items, instead of manually spacing the content out. Additionally, on the Monolith Burger page, you could use the {{sidebar}} template for the secret message. On all the Space Quest III pages, you should probably replace the section navigation at the bottom of the page with a {{Footer Nav}}, just to standardise the navigation. :-) If you've got any questions or comments about this, just leave a note on my talk page (or here, since I'll watch it), and keep up the good work! --DrBob (Talk) 17:09, 27 March 2007 (CDT)

RE: Editing Tips[edit]

Hello! Thank you for your positive feedback. The {{-}} template is "just what I've been looking for", and I think that {{Footer Nav}} looks great (better than my div, anyway). I thank you for taking the time to explain this to me, since that will improve my future guides while saving me quite a bit of time! Do keep in mind that it is my first guide on StrategyWiki (and I've had to change schools in the mean time, so time was taken off).

Couple of Questions:

One of my main peeves is the fact that I can not seem to make images into links (for example, in Space_Quest_III:_The_Pirates_of_Pestulon/Appendix_D, it would be nice if one could use the table with all visible items to navigate to the items a-la TOC. Having said that, I don't find it completely necessary, but would be "nice."

Do we have any policy against making headers (e.g. "=== Subtite ===") into a link? I ask this, because it would make sense in certain places (items page, etc) but of course would get old and over-bearing very quickly.

I'll be tidying up the pages sometime tonight and perhaps tomorrow. Anything you wish to add, share, or point out will be read with appreciation. I sincerely thank you for your time to fix the quide as well as write to me. Thank you.

Images can be turned into links with the use of the ImageMap Extension. Another way is to make a link like http://media.strategywiki.org/images/9/91/Sw_1337.png. Just make sure it's clear, since the default behavior is for images to link to their pages, not specific sections (might surprise someone ^_^). I don't think there is any real "policy" against header links, but it isn't recommended. However, if you think it's the best way to accomplish a certain result, go for it. As for some helpful links, check out the StrategyWiki:Guide. We're slowly building it up, and it should answer most of the easy questions (though you seem to already have a good grasp of mediawiki =) ). My final suggestion is to join us on IRC (or with the java client, just join #StrategyWiki). There are usually one or two people on there who are dying for attenti... to help you ;). If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. -- Prod (Talk) 22:39, 27 March 2007 (CDT)

Custom Signature[edit]

I saw your comment on Dr. B's page, so I thought I could help. Go to the preferences page, and on the first page that shows, change the Nickname field to what you want to appear and check the "raw signature" box below it. Whatever is filled in will act like code as your signature, so you can have whatever you want to appear. For me, I used the very simple, although not as smooth looking, {{SUBST:user|Notmyhandle}}. Just paste that template into the box with whatever nickname you like to use instead of mine, and voila! --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 16:44, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

Just to hijack this section, in reply to your request to delete those images. I'll delete the ones you listed on my talk page, but in future you might want to just tag the images with {{delete}}, and a sysop will get round to deleting them in a few days. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 17:06, 28 March 2007 (CDT)
I knew I was going to embarrass myself with that question! :) Thanks, I'll try to be more thorough in my MediaWiki research next time prior to asking....

theEXIT (talk contribs) 17:10, 28 March 2007 (CDT) <- CHECK ME OUT!!! :)

Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon[edit]

For the naming of the appendices, I'd suggest moving them from pages like Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon/Appendix C/Astro Chicken to Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon/Astro Chicken, or Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon/Appendix D to Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon/Items. The naming is clearer that way, rather than needing to have another title on the page. -- Prod (Talk) 20:02, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

Done. The guide is literally almost finished, short of two floats for which I need to make the artwork. Please let me know if I am missing anything at all to make it a lvl 4 guide. Cheers. theEXIT (talk contribs) 20:24, 28 March 2007 (CDT)
I've just gone through the guide and done some copyediting. The only things I see stopping it from being a level four guide are Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon/Dukem Nukem Robots and the main page. The former needs some layout love, and the latter needs a proper introduction, a little reorganisation, and some more info added to the infobox. Good work! --DrBob (Talk) 08:36, 30 March 2007 (CDT)
I have made changes according to your suggestions/guidelines. (Dukem Nukem Robots Update, Main Page Update). theEXIT (talk contribs) 13:05, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

theEXIT (talk contribs) 14:37, 30 March 2007 (CDT): THE GUIDE IS FINISHED. :)

Congratulations, and keep editing! :-D --DrBob (Talk) 17:25, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

Monkey Island[edit]

Good stuff, thanks! --LeftHandedGuitarist 01:47, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

By the way I noticed that you enquired about ScummVM on the Monkey Island front page - yes, it does improve the graphics (as long as you have half-decent hardware) as it ups the resolution and adds anti-aliasing, making the games look a lot more attractive than they used to! --LeftHandedGuitarist 09:11, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

Image categories[edit]

First off, nice work with the SQ3 guide, it looks nice :). About the images, please refer to the help and guidelines when adding categories. If you are uploading a lot of images for one game, create a category (such as Category:Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge images (a sub category of Category:Game images) and add that to all the images you upload. In summary, the Game images cat should not go on individual images. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Happy editing :) -- Prod (Talk) 20:43, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

Sorry about that. Do you want me to create those categories for SQ3/SQ2?
--theEXIT (talk contribs) 20:51, 30 March 2007 (CDT)
If you want, the sq2/3 cats aren't necessary. However, the images must be removed from the game images cat and added to the other cats (those items probably go in Category:Items and maybe Category:Artwork or sprites, it's all on StrategyWiki:Images). -- Prod (Talk) 20:57, 30 March 2007 (CDT)
Fixed. Sorry to give you so much grief, it won't happen again. --theEXIT (talk contribs) 21:20, 30 March 2007 (CDT).
Don't think Prod's getting mad at you, all up in your grill. The posse thinks its wise to follow the policies and such; ya know, keep the streets clean ya hurrrrd? XD --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 21:26, 30 March 2007 (CDT)
As you can guess from the age-old games that I want to contribute, I'm a bit of an older guy, so I'm not -that- naïve. Considering how much I value "RTFM" mantra, it's not very cool when you add a bunch of tags that would be someone else's pain in the ass - hence my apology. I very much agree with categories and whatnot. My wife still wishes that I would take care of our living room the same way that I take care of my code... :) --theEXIT (talk contribs) 21:32, 30 March 2007 (CDT) P.S. You guys are nice, a definite anomaly to the internet. :P
One of the earlier games I remember playing was Commander Keen :D. Personally, I have my issues with the RTFM method (finding the right manual is often the hard part :P). I usually just make the changes and hope the person is using their watchlist, today I was a bit lazy though. And don't worry too much about making mistakes, at this point there are still some policies we are working out so some alternate options are helpful. And I jump at any chance to fire up my bot ;). Oh, and if you organized your living room the programming way, you'd have stick-it notes everywhere (just in case you forget what the couch does ;) )! -- Prod (Talk)
