XCOM 2 is a 2016 strategy game developed by Firaxis Games. It received two Downloadable Content (DLC) missions in 2016: The Alien Hunters and Shen's Last Gift. In 2017, Firaxis released a comprehensive expansion: XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.

It is the year 2035. The Alien invasion which began in March of 2015 successfully defeated Earth's defenses and overthrew their government. Now humanity lives under the rule of ADVENT, a global human/alien government with an as-of-yet unknown agenda. Central Officer Bradford, a former XCOM officer, leads an operation to rescue the Commander from an ADVENT Stasis cell. After removing an ADVENT chip from the Commander's skull, the player assumes the role of the Commander, and leads the new resistance against ADVENT and the aliens.

Gameplay in XCOM 2 is divided into two major layers: Tactical layer and Strategic layer.

In the tactical layer, the player assumes direct command of some soldiers (typically four to six) in a turn-based battle. Each soldier has two action points to spend on actions such as movement, firing their weapon, throwing a grenade, or using one of their special abilities. Units may act in any order during the player turn. Once the player has spent all of their actions, the Alien turn begins. Alien units have actions they may spend in a similar manner to XCOM units, and all alien units move during their turn.

In the strategic layer, the player commands the Avenger, a mobile base which can research new technology, develop new items, and gather resources, among other things. The player spends resources such as supplies, intel, alloys, elerium, and time in order to upgrade their forces and unlock new missions. As time passes in the strategic layer, the Alien forces will upgrade themselves without regard to the progress (or lack of progress) that the player makes during this time.
