Fruit[edit]

There are eight different types of fruit found throughout the game. These eight are: apples, bananas, watermelons, grapes, melons, peppers, bomberries, and heart fruit. Only the first five count toward the required 30 for each level. Each Yoshi has a favorite fruit that gives them more health and points when eaten. All Yoshis like melons.

  • Black Yoshi likes all types of fruit.
  • Blue Yoshi likes grapes.
  • Green Yoshi likes watermelons.
  • Light Blue Yoshi likes grapes.
  • Pink Yoshi likes apples.
  • Red Yoshi likes apples.
  • Yellow Yoshi likes bananas.
  • White Yoshi likes all types of fruit.

All Yoshis except for Black and White hate peppers and bomberries and suffer from eating them. Bomberries only appear in Jungle Puddle and give damage on contact or consumption. The Heart Fruit makes Yoshi super happy, incapable of taking damage, longer tongued, and incapable of running out of eggs for a limited amount of time. Ground Pounding will pop bubbles and convert Shy Guys into lucky fruit. Also, Black and White Yoshis can hover farther when using the hover jump technique while super happy. Black and White Yoshis appear later in the game. They don't seem to appear in the first few levels.

One of the regular Yoshi's favorite fruits will be the Lucky Fruit. All Yoshi's like it even better than their favorite fruit. To get the most from your fruit, don't choose the Yoshi whose favorite fruit is the Lucky Fruit.

Items[edit]

There are many different items located around Yoshi's Story. Some may help, while others may hinder.

  • Egg Block: This white and spotted box will drop out eggs every single time Yoshi hits it with his head unless Yoshi already has six eggs trailing behind him or ready to pick up. This will be one of the most handy items since you need eggs almost everywhere you go. The color of the spots on the box and the eggs will correspond to the color of the Yoshi that the player has chosen.
  • Message Block: This block with a talking face on it will tell you things you need to know about the game if Yoshi hits it. Although it will generally be talk about how to perform different actions or what something is, sometimes they will tell you where secret things are hiding, like the infamous Black and White Yoshis.
  • Mystery Crate: These big boxes with question marks on them can be pushed or slammed, depending on what you need to do in a certain area. Most of the time you'll need to push one of the boxes over to another box to make two melons appear.
  • Mystery Block: Initiates a race or other event.
  • Coin: Each coin increases Yoshi's mood by one.
  • Special Heart: Collecting these will increase level selection on the next page. Each is worth 100 points.
  • Surprise Ball: If Yoshi licks one of these, he will flip onto it.
  • Bumper Ball: These follow set tracks and push any yoshi they touch out of their way, potentially knocking them into pits.
  • Mystery Ball: These often contain special hearts, but not always.
  • Mystery Switch: Jump on it to make something appear for a limited time.
  • Delay Switch: Keeps a mystery switch's timer from running out too soon.
  • Pipe: These take Yoshi somewhere else. They can be used in both directions.
  • Warp Vase: Basically a one way pipe that isn't always visible.
  • Black Egg and White Egg: These are rare. If you touch one, it will follow you just like a normal egg. If you complete the level with it in tow, a yoshi of the corresponding color will appear the next time you visit the yoshi select screen. It will also count as a yoshi when your score is totaled at the end of the level.
  • Power Bee: Returns your smile meter to full if it is pink.
  • Power Flower: This allows Yoshi to recover some health by swallowing the petals, which reappear almost immediately and can therefore be used to fully recover health. They cannot increase your total mood.
  • Power Tulip: Eat this to put yourself in a protective egg.
  • Key: This is required to enter locked doors. It is usually dropped by enemies and follows you like an egg.
  • Umbrella: Lets you fall gently instead of hovering. It can only be used in the area it is found in.

Modes[edit]

Story Mode[edit]

Play through one level of each page. The game will save your progress after each level. You can continue from the last page you completed.

Trial Mode[edit]

Play any level that you have beaten in Story Mode. The black and white yoshis and eggs are not available. The top five scores for a completed level are displayed to the right when the cursor is on the level.

Options[edit]

Lets you change the sound settings to Stereo, Mono, or Head Phones. You can also change the language to Japanese or clear the memory of all story mode and trial mode data.

Practice[edit]

Come here before visiting story mode. The Message Blocks will teach you the basics. Your yoshi's color will be determined by the one you used last in trial mode or story mode. This is the only level in which the total melon count is less than 30.
