Regular Ghosts
Gold Ghost
Though orange in colour, these ghosts known as Gold Ghosts are the first ghosts Luigi meets in the game, and among the weakest. They have a maximum of 10hp. They attack by sneaking up on Luigi and punching. Sometimes, these ghosts appear with hearts of fire, in which case the fire must be quenched with some Water. These fiery Gold Ghosts are called Temper Terrors.
Purple Puncher
Purple Punchers, as the name suggests, attack Luigi by punching him. Their punches are stronger than those of the Gold Ghosts, causing 10hp damage with each hit. They have 20hp. These ghosts may appear with frozen hearts, and their hearts must be melted before the ghosts can be captured.
Blue Twirler
Blue Twirlers have 30hp, and attack by pounding the ground heavily, causing shockwaves that cause Luigi 10hp damage if they hit him. Some of these ghosts have hearts doused in water, and must be frozen to become vulnerable. These watery Blue Twirlers are called Blue Blazes.
Garbage Can Ghost
Garbage Can Ghosts do not attack Luigi directly. Instead, they appear, eat a banana, and throw the skin on the ground, disappearing soon after. This makes it more difficult to catch them, since Luigi must avoid the banana skins while trying to catch them. They have the highest HP of any regular ghost, with 40hp.
Grabbing Ghost
Grabbing Ghosts come in four different types, all attacking Luigi by grabbing him. If this happens, the player must rotate to escape. The weakest of these, the White Ghost, has 10hp, and can only impede Luigi's movement, and not harm him. The other three types all have 20hp, and can cause 5-13hp damage if they grab Luigi. Red Grabbing Ghosts appear as normal, but other types, called Mirror Ghosts (found in the Mirror Room) and Cinema Ghosts (found in the Projection Room) are invisible, and can only be seen as reflections in the mirror or shadows on the projection screen. However, when Luigi's shines his flashlight on the invisible versions of these ghosts, they then become visible until sucked up or let go.
Ceiling Surprise
Ceiling Surprises hang from the ceiling, trying to scare Luigi. They have 0 HP, and so are defeated instantly if Luigi turns the Poltergust on them. A sub-species called Purple Bombers act similarly, but can attack by dropping bombs on Luigi. If either version of this ghost is sucked up by Luigi, it will then drop a free heart. Both are usually found together in corridors, although they have been known to pop up in areas like the Courtyard and Sealed Room.
Shy-Guy
Shy-Guys are ghosts whose main feature are the masks that shield their hearts from Luigi's flashlight. If Luigi wishes to catch a Shy-Guy ghost, he must first remove their masks to reveal their 20hp hearts. Shy-Guys often appear in pairs. They will only attack if their masks are removed or if their partner is sucked up, and attack by trying to pierce Luigi with a spear.
Speedy Spirit
Speedy Spirits are similar to Gold Ghosts, in that they have the same amount of health, and similar appearance, but with a light blue colour rather than orange. They do not attack Luigi, but instead fly away from him at a rapid speed. They only appear in fifteen locations throughout the game, and are therefore very valuable, but you only have one chance to catch it if you find one. They give out large amounts of cash when caught. If you miss one, you may get another chance to catch it during the blackout, but this isn't guaranteed to happen.
The Boos
A total of fifty Boos appear throughout the game, after they have been released from the Storage Room. They have varying amounts of HP, and only appear in rooms after the lights have been turned on. 35 Boos appear in rooms throughout the Mansion, and the remaining 15 form the Boss of Area 3, Boolossus. Luigi must catch 40 Boos (45 in the PAL Hidden Mansion) before he can face the final boss.
Skeleton Ghost
Skeleton Ghosts have 30hp. They attack Luigi by throwing bones at him. After throwing a bone at him, they will collapse, drift away to another location, and reform themselves. During the rebuilding process, they become vulnerable to Luigi's flashlight.
Minor ghosts
- Mice and Bats: These appear mainly in corridors. They do not attack, and only cause damage if Luigi walks into them.
- Gold Mice: Similarly to Speedy Spirits, these reward Luigi with cash if caught. They appear if Luigi scans wedges of cheese in certain rooms.
- Bowler Ghosts: These often appear in corridors alongside Ceiling Surprises. They attack by throwing a bowling ball at Luigi.
- Waiters: Two of these appear in the Dining Room. They have 10hp, and their only purpose in the afterlife is to replenish Mr. Luggs' meal.
- Flying Fish: These ghosts are small and come in many colors. They don't have health, but they fly around Luigi and try to hit him. They tend to hang out in areas or rooms with water.
- Spark: Spiky, explosive ghosts that appear in awkward locations in corridors. They explode if touched, causing 10hp damage. Can be quenched with Water, although they regenerate quickly.
