Getting to the Basement

You're now in the Mansion's Guardhouse, where several mysteries lie: from gigantic sharks to mutated plants, this Guardhouse has everything you could imagine. All major items will be detailed in this section, including the final key we need to unlock the rest of the doors in the Mansion.

Run forward and you'll be able to pick up two Blue Herbs and a single Green Herb in the corner, although it is not advised that you pick up the Blue ones. Walk behind the statue and push it down the hallway until you reach the middle of intersection. Proceed to walk to the left of the statue and push it over the small hole in the floor. This prevents the Plant 42's (you'll find out what this thing is soon) vines from attacking you when you walk through this area. Go back to the first corridor and go through the first single door on the right. (Director's Cut players can't do anything about the hole in front of the red doors, but we're only going there once, so it's not a major concern.)

Go to the other side of this room and take the Explosive Rounds (Beretta Clip for Chris players) and First Aid Spray from the bookshelf. Walk up to the item box and drop off the Square Crank, Explosive Rounds (for Jill), First Aid Spray, and any other herbs you may have. Save the game if you'd like by using the typewriter in the corner, and then exit the room (make sure you only take one weapon with some ammo with you, preferably the Beretta). Rebirth players will find a blue item box puzzle; to solve it, .

Head through the single door that's across from the one you just came from. Run foward and past the camera to see two zombies just around the corner. Wait for them to come toward you and then finish them off. When both of them are dead, unlock the small desk drawer to find a box of Shotgun Shells (Chris players will have to use a Small Key). Take the Red Book that's on the bed and then go through the single door that's next to the entranceway door. Chris players can also find a Small Key inside the cup that's on the nightstand in the corner. Director's Cut players will not find the Red Book, so instead of going into the bathroom, return back to the hallway.

Now for all versions except the Director's Cut players: walk up to the bathtub and unplug it to drain all of the water. Once all the water is gone, search the bathtub again to find the Control Room Key and then leave the room (a zombie will come out of the bathtub for Rebirth players). Go back into the nearby hallway afterwards. All versions are now together again, but will part ways soon.

Every version except Director's Cut: turn left, take a right at the intersection, and go through the single door at the end of the corridor (Rebirth players will trigger a knife fight from before). If you'd like, you can go through the set of double red doors to find some extra goodies. As soon as you enter the room, run to the right and take the Ink Ribbons on the table. Immediately check the stack of barrels in the corner to find a Beretta Clip and then leave the room. Avoid the Spiders as best you can, and if you get poisoned, you can always use one of the Blue Herbs out in the Main Hallway.

Director's Cut players must instead open the double red doors at the end of the hallway. Immediately run to the right and take the Red Book that's on top of the table. Before leaving, you can take a Beretta Clip from the stack of barrels next to the table, but other than that, just leave the room. If you were poisoned, you can use one of the Blue Herbs located in the corner of the Main Hallway. Now run forward, take a left at the intersection, and go through the single door at the end of the corridor.

All versions are now together again: turn the corner just up ahead and go through the first single door on the right. Run forward, turn left, and run down the single corridor. At the end of this corridor is the 002 Key; grab it and then leave the room the same way you came in (don't waste any ammo on the Bees as they're harmless and pose almost no threat). Take a right, turn the corner, and go through the door labeled '002'. Before entering, you can push the gargoyle statue forward to reveal three Green Herbs.

We're getting to another point where the versions will separate again. Director's Cut players can follow the next walkthrough but before going down the ladder, they'll have to open the door next to the entryway. Other versions will have to skip down to the next heading below. Onto the walkthrough: run forward and unlock the desk drawer for a box of Shotgun Shells (Chris players will need a Small Key). There's also a Guardhouse Map on the nearby wall and the Plant 42 Report on top of the bed. Go to the area behind the bed and push the bureau on the left forward and the bureau on the right a little to the right to reveal a ladder (Rebirth players will have to deal with a lone zombie and spider). Climb down this ladder. (Regular versions besides Director's Cut can go through the single door next to the entranceway door. Inside is a lone zombie and a Beretta Clip in the sink.)

Director's Cut players: quickly kill the two zombies inside, grab the 003 Key from the sink, and then leave the room. Now open the door next to you, take a left and run down the hallway until you approach a single door: go through it. Run across the room and go through the door labeled '003'; proceed forward and kill the zombie hovering around the desk. Once he's dead, walk up to the bookshelf, take the gray-colored book and then place the Red Book inside. This will cause the nearby shelf to move to the right, revealing a hidden door you must now go through.

If you'd like to you can open the single door next to the entranceway; this leads to the 003 Dormitory Bathroom, where a lone zombie and some Flame Rounds preside (a Beretta Clip will be there for Chris players). As soon as you enter start shooting Plant 42 with whatever ammo you have (Flame Rounds are recommended). It will take over twenty Beretta rounds, six to ten Shotgun Shells, or three to eight various types of grenades to weaken Plant 42; after it does, Barry will come in with a flamethrower and finish it off, saving Jill from a gruesome fate. After the cutscene, walk up to the fireplace and take the Control Room Key; retrace your steps back to the 002 Dormitory and push the two shelves aside to find a hidden ladder, which you must go down (skip to the next heading).

After Chris looks at the huge mutated plant, he will grabbed by it as Rebecca enters the room. Chris tells Rebecca to create the potion to destroy the Plant's roots, so you must now control Rebecca; after the cutscene, she exits the room.
