UNDERTALE/Chara

Overview

Chara is the first human to fall into the underground. Chara is seen to be alive in some cases, controlling the player and making them kill.

Apperance

Chara has the same sprite as the player. She wears a lime and blond shirt instead however. Her shirt is said to be the color negatives of the players shirt colors, blue and purple. She is seen to have a smile that contrasts the players stoic expression.

Personality

Chara used to be very nice when she was alive. Asriel admits at the end of the pacifist route, however, that she "wasn't the greatest person." She is seen to be polite and deliberate at the end of the Genocide Route, thanking the player for guiding and reviving them. She becomes really stupidly mad and yells at the player, should they refuse her offer to erase the world.

In the Game

True pacifist Route

She is never seen in-game, as she is only mentioned by Asriel at the end of the game if you immediately go to Asgore's house after the battle with Asriel. It is here where Asriel says that she "wasn't the greatest person."

Neutral Route

Once again, never seen in game. Only maybe mentioned by Asgore if Flowey was killed in a previous Neutral Route.

Genocide Route

At the end of the game, she will appear. She calls the player a great person and says that their determination revived her. She then asks if the player wants to erase the world. She'll erase it regardless, refusing it only jumpscares you.

Trivia

• Naming the fallen human Chara prompts the text, "The true name"
• Chara is speculated to be the one narrating things around Asgore's house in the Genocide Route.
  • Chara is also speculated to be the owner of the Worn Dagger and the Heart Locket, as they turn into the Real Knife and The Locket in the Genocide Route.
• Chara died of buttercup poisoning when Asriel mixed up the ingredients of a pie.
  • He put buttercups instead of 3 cups of butter.
    • It is shown in the VHS tapes in the True Lab that Asriel did the same to Asgore by accident. Asgore recovered though, which is how he is alive in the events of UNDERTALE
  • It is speculated that this may be intentional on Chara's part, because in VHS tape 4, Asriel says that they would save the underground, and he was getting flowers.
    • Also, the monsters that tell Asriel's story at the end of the Neutral/Pacifist routes say that the human (Chara) became very ill.
