Overview[edit]

Toriel is a huge, motherly boss monster who lives in the RUINS. She is one of the first characters who the player meets (besides Flowey, who doesn't really count. He's a flower, not really a character until later.) and the one who tries to protect the player from Asgore.

Appearance[edit]

Like Asgore, she is a huge, goat-like monster with huge floppy ears, small goat horns, and a purple robe with the Delta Rune symbol on it, showing her connection to the Royal Family even more (if the fact that she's a giant, two-legged goat wasn't enough). She also wields fire magic during her boss battle, when sending Flowey to the moon after he tries to kill you, and during the first and third parts of Asriel's battle.

Personality[edit]

Toriel is seen to be very motherly, and is very kind to the player. Back when Chara was alive and part of her family, she cared for Chara and her son Asriel as if they were both equal. She clearly despises Asgore for his promise to kill the humans who fall into the Underground so he can take their SOULs. She is also kind enough to keep the player in the RUINS instead of letting them leave, as she tries to destroy the door from the RUINS to Snowdin before the player can leave, causing a battle if the player tries to stop her.

In the Game[edit]

Pacifist Route[edit]

She appears on the title screen if you spare her, and she appears at the end of the game to stop Flowey from harming the player, before her soul is absorbed. She doesn't appear after the RUINS until that point in the game, however. She also gives the player pie if she is spared.

Neutral Route[edit]

If you spared her, she will appear on the title screen as a result. However, should you kill her, she will not appear on the title screen, Flowey will leave a threatening message for you at the Waterfall through an Echo Flower, and it can also be the cause of many Neutral Route endings. Bottom Line? Don't kill her. She gives pie if you spare her.

Genocide Route[edit]

The only thing you need to know about her besides to kill her for the Route is that her fatal pose is different depending on if you are in the neutral route or the Genocide Route.

Trivia[edit]

  • Before Asgore tried to kill all humans who entered, Toriel, Asgore, Chara, and Asriel lived together as a family, living in Asgore's house.
    • This can be seen in some of the VHS Tapes that are in the True Lab.
  • Toriel does not know that Flowey is actually Asriel
    • Asgore is unaware as well
      • The only hint that they have ever met Flowey is his story he tells on the Genocide Route.
  • There are other hints to Toriel's heritage as a boss monster.
    • She looks like a goat
    • She wears at least one thing with the Delta Rune on it
    • She uses fire magic, like Asriel and Asgore
  • She has actually been in contact with Sans. This is not shown, however, until the player has done the Family, Exiled Queen, or Pacifist endings.
