Northwest Len

Upon using the Amulet, you will arrive in the center of the northern-most region of Len. Len is quite expansive, but roughly broken up into four corners and a center area by mountain ranges. You start at the location marked by the "!" on the map above. Combat in Len is identical to combat in the Overworld, only you will encounter more ferocious enemies. Stay near the arrival location to get a feel for the strength of the monsters that occupy the area before you venture further out. You can use the Amulet whenever you like to transport back to the Overworld, but you must have at least 5 magic points. You will arrive in front of Alitania castle whenever you do so. When you feel you are ready, your first destination should be the cave in the Northwest corner of Len.

A) Northwest cave

The entrance to the Northwest cave is nestled to the south of a branch in the mountain range that extends from the north. The only way to approach the entrance is through the hills below. This cave serves as your introduction to spelunking in the world of Len. Ultimately, your goal is to collect two items from the lower level. One is the Read Helmet which will allow you to read informative signs found in other caves. The other is the Thunder Rod which will expand your arsenal in the fight against enemies, but at a greater consumption of MP.

Each cave consists of a series of connected rooms, and at least two different levels. You will encounter enemies in a number of rooms. The number of enemies which populate the room when you arrive varies, and enemies will always be replenished if you leave and return to a room. Additionally, the enemies that appear in certain rooms are of particular strength. Some rooms only have low power enemies, other rooms have high power enemies, and some rooms will have a mix of both. Use the following maps and tables to help guide your progress through the cave.

Southeast Len

B) Southeast cave

There are a couple of paths that will lead you far to the south in order to reach the cave in the southeast corner of Len. The two most direct routes are to either head south from the Amulet arrival point, and travel through the valley just east of the lava flow, or to head east from the arrival point, and south through the eastern desert. Either way that you travel, the enemies will be stronger in the south, so proceed with caution.

This next cave contains two separate stairs to the basement level. One basement level contains an important item, the black mask, and the other basement contains a sign that relates to the item.

Northeast Len

C) Northeast caves

The cave entrance in the northeast has a special wrinkle to it. Inside the cave, you will encounter a gas-filled tunnel. You can only survive passage through it by wearing the Black Mask. When you get to the other side, you will find that the first cave was only a passage that leads to a small corner of the world locked away by mountains. The real cave is on the other side. Inside, you must explore down to the lowest levels to once again find an important item, the Glacier Crystal, and a sign related to it.

Southwest Len

D) Southern desert

One of the men trapped in the basement of Arlem Castle told you to explore the southern plains of Len. If you examine the southern desert, one tile should stand out rather strikingly and should immediately rouse suspicion. If you examine this tile, you will indeed find something, the Black Idol. Now you are only one idol away from the complete set.

E) Southwest cave

This is the last cave you will have to explore before you are ready to challenge the cave locked away behind the lava in the center of Len. Rather than being able to explore all of it at once, you must first explore one branch, find an item, and then use that item to open the other branch. In this second branch, not only will you find the final idol, but you will also find the location where the summoning of the Sword of Kalin is to take place.

Center of Len

F) Lava

In order to reach the cave found in the very center of Len, you will need to find a way to get across the lava that completely surrounds it. Fortunately, you have an item in your possession that will help you do just that. Approach the lava bank from the only available location on the east side, and use the Glacier Crystal. The power of the crystal is so strong, that it will freeze the lava and make it safe to walk upon. Cross over to the west side, where you can gain access to the island in the center of the lava, upon which you will find the final cave.

G) Final cave

Though the monsters in the final cave can be grouped into low, high, and mixed strength enemies, the enemies you find in this cave are different from all of the rest of the caves, and they are among the strongest enemies that you will encounter in the whole game. Being as close to level 50 as possible, if not beyond, will help ensure that you survive the ordeal.

When you reach the final room in the C section of Basement 3, you will discover the identity of the final boss. Restore your HP and MP with potions before walking up to the boss an engaging him in combat. When you do, the boss will appear at the top of the room, surrounded by phantom knights which he summons to protect him. Unless you have the Sword of Kalin, you will be unable to harm the boss. Assuming you have it, you must run up to the boss, attack him with the sword, and he will teleport to a new location. You must then approach him at this new location and repeat the process. It won't take many hits before the boss is defeated. However, the bigger problem to worry about are the phantom knights. Even if you engage a knight in combat and defeat it, another one will appear to take its place. In order to make dealing with them much easier, you should use the Black Idol's power to slow enemies down, making them far easier to dodge. Keep your eye on your health and magic points, and use potions whenever necessary. There is no battle beyond this one, so don't save your potions. If you defeat the boss, you will be treated to the ending of the game. Congratulations.
