Halfway house - Devin Torlock

Once inside the walls of the small fortress, you approach the larger of two buildings. You enter and stand at a scarred wooden counter. Presently a man appears from a back room. "Goo day", he says in a very high voice. "What have we here? Fighters?"

• MAN/ELF/DWARF/KELDEN: He leans so close you feel as though he may kiss you. Sniffing, he says: "Hi, Fighter!"
• WOMAN/ELVESS: His eyes blink so fast, your own water in sympathy. "How pretty you are, miss!"

His smile is one that makes you want to punch his unshown teeth in. Patiently, you ask:

• News? His eyes squint, his nose twitches, and with a burst he sneezes all over you. "Sorry!"
• News? He looks behind you at the window, screams, and grabs a rag. "All this filth makes me sick!"
• News? He skitters around the place sweeping like mad. "I dust and sweep but it is useless! Yes?"
• News? "A man was carried in here the other day half dead. They say he was attacked by a Sledge."
  • Sledge? "Yes! Yes! His friends said it was taller than a Cliff Troll! Can you imagine? Hmmm?"
  • Cliff troll? "They are the biggest things I ever saw! Huge they are, with big drooling maws! Oooh!"
• Other? "Why are you asking so many questions? Surely you can see that I have much to do, hmmm?"

"Skip along now! I have so much cleaning to do before other guests arrive. Bye-bye!"

Nigel

Weapon master - Nigel Gulliam

You knock several times at the oak door, but no one answers. Just as you turn to leave, The door swings open and a huge man looks at you. He folds his massive arms silently. His side is bandaged, and he winces as he moves. He leans back and growls: "What?"

• MAN/ELF/DWARF/KELDEN: Leaning back, he looks you up and down. The whole time his breathing is heavy. "What?"
• WOMAN/ELVESS: His smile is not much better than his glare. His huge teeth gleam. "Yes, miss?", he says.

There have been safer people to question in the towns, but bravely you ask:

• News? His bottom lip juts out as he looks to the ceiling and says: "I hear little out here."
• Seggallion? Clearing his throat, he adjusts his weight to one side and says: "I led him to the Trap."
  • Trap? "It was not my doing, you understand, I was Mislead myself." He sits down.
  • Mislead? "By Pildar's men!" He suddenly shouts, unable to control his anger. "I did not know!"
  • Pildar? "Yes, his men. They convinced me that he was needed by the Duke. So I rode to get him."
  • Duke? "No, Seggallion. After I found him, we rode to help the Duke, but we were ambushed."
• Other? He does not seem to respond in any manner. Then suddenly he shrugs his massive shoulders.

His muscles twist under and over each other like large snakes as he slams the door shut.

The Hobe

Celegorn

The Hobe's main gate - Sir Celegorn

The Hobe is a glorious fortress with a natural moat. The bastions are high, and the iron gate strong. a huge Knight bars you from entering. The look on his face is one of stolid fortitude. "Good day, wanderers! I am Sir Celegorn, the guardian to the Queen, and Royal Gatekeeper."

• MAN/ELF/DWARF/KELDEN: "Hail, brother in arms! Your journey has surely been one worthy of a drink and a tale!"
• WOMAN/ELVESS: "Lo, strong woman! I have sought long for one so fair to make my own. Are you available?"

His large form seems to block out the sun as he squints down at you. Suddenly, you ask:

• News? "The Duke himself was a Hobean. He was less fighter and more a scholar, though."
• News? "The job of a gatekeeper is a rigorous one. The other day I repelled an attack of Giants!"
  • Giants? "Hill giants, I think they were. Fearsome hulks! They disturbed my lunch as well!"
• News? "The keep was built of the best Dwarven stone. It took them ten years to raise these walls."
  • Dwarves? "They are our allies. I have fought nextto many of the best. They are tough, I will tell you."
• Other? He squints his eyes so tightly you fear that they might explode. "I am afraid I do not know."

"Halt! Before you leave know that I am always ready for any who would cause trouble!"

Stiveson

The Hobean Keep - Lord Stiveson Bonner

You approach the tall central building in this keep and knock on the door. A man dressed in silver armor answers. On his breastplate is a lion over a sword: a knight's crest. "Hello! Welcome to the Hobe, where a boy becomes a man, and a man becomes a leader!"

• MAN/ELF/DWARF/KELDEN: "You carry yourself as one who knows true happiness. You have seen the sting of battle!"
• WOMAN/ELVESS: "I see your hands are rough from the grip of the hilt. You are no frail thing!"

This man seems honest enough. His presence alone makes you feel at ease to ask:

• News? "Do not let Celegorn's demeanor fool you. He can take any man in the land. I taught him!"
  • Celegorn? "He was just a child when we found him in the hills. His father was a Barbarian."
  • Barbarian? "Yes, and his mother was an Amazon! As you can see by his size, he is born to fight."
• News? "This keep is much older than it looks. It is a tribute to Dwarven construction!"
• News? "The stones are of a type never seen before by men. They come from deep in the earth."
• Other? "Hmmm. That is not a topic on which I dwell. Perhaps a sage can answer that."

"If you are down in Olanthan, be sure to say 'hi' to Ahunholland for me."

Siegar

The guardshack - a man in irons

As you enter, you see a man chained to the wall. On his forehead he has the brand of the Dark Guard. His eyes burn with the ferocity of a wild animal. On his left sits a guard. "Do not get too close to this one", the guard says, "He is one of Pildar's henchmen."

• MAN/ELF/DWARF/KELDEN: The prisoner shouts: "Beware, warrior. Your death will be a pleasure to our Guard!"
• WOMAN/ELVESS: "Woman, you will have it the worst", the chained man screams, "Your pain will be tremendous!"

The danger of talking to this man is evident from the guard's looks. So you ask carefully:

• News? The chained man whispers at you and saliva drips from his mouth. "I am Siegar. Fear me."
  • Siegar? "You speak my name with a trembling throat. Your fear has just begun!"
• News? "I will escape this cell. When I do, I will stalk you across all of Ashtalarea!"
  • Ashtalarea? "Yes. Across this big land. You see, I have seen your face. That ensures your doom!"
• Other? "So, you know little about this region. It will make your loss seem unfair."
  • Seggallion? "I myself led him into the ambush. He and his men from around the land were so surprised!"
  • Duke? "You do not believe he is dead? None believe the prophet until doom is in the land."

"Go now and remember what you have seen. No man can live under the control of evil!"
