In the tutorial, pick a dog to take home. Next, it will ask you to soothe the dog when it is scared; to calm it down, feed it and give it water (click on the My Items button, tap the Care button, Click on water or food).
Next, you have to name it. The game will prompt you to say its name in the MIC. The mic is in the black strip above the touch screen. Don't get right up next to it though, say the name about 2 inches away from the mic. It will ask you to repeat yourself a few times in order to learn. Type in the name using the stylus when prompted (a keyboard will be displayed on the touch-screen).
