The ins and outs of Phrygia[edit]

Climbing the first half[edit]

Aside from the two landings where you can arrive by dolphin, the majority of Phrygia consists of a tower that contains doors that lead into and out of the structure. While the tower is three sections high, it is composed of six sections, three representing the exterior and three representing the interior. Naturally, it will be necessary to move in and out of the tower in order to reach your ultimate goal: the Temple of Artemis. You will begin at the bottom of the tower. You will be required to climb to the top, before descending to the bottom, and finally climbing to the top once again.

You can ignore the Dark Pegasus

When you arrive in Phrygia, you will hop off the dolphin and begin walking to the entrance, just as you did in Crete. And just as in Crete, you will be greeted by a boss. This time, it will be the Dark Pegasus. While it hovers in the air, it shoots fireballs down at you. Not only is there no reward for defeating this beast, it's far easier to slip beneath it and run straight to the entrance. If you feel the need to do combat with the dark winged horse, simply jump up as the Dark Pegasus floats down to the ground, and strike it on the head. It takes four strikes from the Divine Sword to defeat it, two if you obtained the Power Bracelet from Ares in Crete.

Once inside, you will begin in the lower left corner of section B. In the section images above, the red letters connect the exterior and interior sections. So door C in the lower left corner of section B leads to door C in the lower right corner of section C. Unfortunately, doors C and D are of little use to you. Instead, walk further in to the right to door F. Along the way, you will be attacked by a Gargoyle that flies across the screen. Walk through door F, and you will be in the interior of the bottom floor.

Attack the Giant Snake from afar

The interior is the mirror image of the exterior, so you will be on the left side of the floor. Two serpents are nearby, one on the floor, and one on the ledge above. Advance to the right, and you will encounter a much more dangerous enemy: a Giant Snake. The Giant Snake remains stationary, but it spits fireballs at you. You may be tempted to run up to it and start striking it in the head, but this is a dangerous strategy. The strike zone of the snake's head is very small, and the fireballs come fairly rapidly. Instead, it's far safer to stand back a bit, jump in the air when the fireballs come, and use the Power of Argus to hit the snake's head with lightning. It may take some time to get the timing down, but it will allow you to defeat the snake from a safe distance. Assuming you have the Power Bracelet, it will only take four hits to defeat the snake.

This door leads to the Spring of Recovery

Climb up the stairs behind the Giant Snake, and pass through door E to the exterior. The same Gargoyle from earlier will return and attack. Strike it down, and climb up the stairs to reach section D. When you arrive, one Gargoyle will descend upon you, while two others will appear from off screen. Destroy all three before you attempt to continue, or you risk falling through the gap at the bottom of the screen. Hop over the gaps to the left to reach the next staircase. Climb up and pass through door J. When you arrive inside section E, wait for the two snakes below to fall through the gap at the bottom, then climb down the stairs and walk to the left. Then climb up the stairs to door K, where you will find a Spring of Recovery. Use this as a base to restore your health.

Continuing on[edit]

Exit the room and climb down the stairs. Watch out for the serpents and return to door J. While you can explore section G above, it will only lead to dead-ends. Head back to door J. Watch out for the Gargoyle that appears, and then climb up the stairs to section F. Deal with the Gargoyle that attacks when you arrive, and then climb up to door P. Head through to section G, and as soon as you arrive, you will be dealing with yet another Giant Snake. Use the same strategy as before to defeat the snake, and then proceed to the left, and climb down the stairs. You'll walk by door Q, but you can ignore it since it places you on a ledge that leads nowhere. Instead, climb down the stairs to the right of door Q, and continue on to section E. Jump over the gap and pass through door L to section D.

Grab this Ambrosia before descending

Watch out for two Gargoyles before climbing up the stairs to the left of door L to section F. Defeat another Gargoyle, climb up the short flight of steps, and jump over the gaps to the right. Watch out for more attacking Gargoyles. Then drop down to the flight of stairs on the right and climb back down to section D. Watch out for more Gargoyles and pass through door M to section E. You will see a Giant Snake below you, and you may be tempted to rush down and fight it, but you should climb up the stairs instead. This will lead you back to section G. Climb all the way up to door R, where you will find a woman who will offer you the last Ambrosia of the game. Collect it to restore and extend your health bar, then head back out and climb down the stairs all the way back to the Giant Snake.

The Moon Crystal is your objective

Defeat the Giant Snake using the Power of Argus. You can even use the staircase as a means of controlling your height before you fire a bolt of lightning at its head. Once the snake is defeated, ignore door N (which leads to a dead-end) and climb down the stairs to section C. Watch out for the serpent to your left. You'll need to jump over the gaps, skip door G, and pass through door H. As soon as you arrive on the right side of section B, move to the center of the of ledge so that the nearby Gargoyle doesn't knock you off into the water. Clear it out of the way and begin the ascent up the right tower. You'll climb all the way to the very top. Gargoyles will attack you the entire way. At the very top of the stairs in section F, you will reach door S. Beyond this door is the Temple of Artemis. Inside, Artemis will inform you that Hades uses a hat to disguise himself, but suggests that using a Moon Crystal can break his spell. Collect the Moon Crystal, and exit the temple.

The entrance to Tartarus

You are done in Phrygia. The safest way to exit is to return through door H at the bottom of the stairs in section B, then pass through either door G above, or door F below. Curiosity may lead you to check out door I which leads to section H. Section H is a lot like section A, complete with another Dark Pegasus. If you summon a dolphin and ride it to the left, you will arrive in Argolis, at section H. However, the same platform that prevents you from leaving Argolis prevents you from entering. So leaving Phrygia in that manner is a dead-end. Instead, walk back to door B in section B to return to section A, and head back to Attica. From here, you must make your way back to Crete or Argolis and use the water passage between them to find Tartarus.
