Map of the Dune Sea

Anchorhead

You exit Anchorhead on the northwest side of the Dune Sea. Czerka marker posts are dotted along the remaining boundaries:

Danger! Turn back.

If you try to cross these boundaries:

Dune Sea: [A vast expanse of desert stretches before you, with no markers or any indications of life. It would be a deathtrap for anyone wandering aimlessly.]

The view of the Dune Sea is dominated by the damaged Sandcrawler in the center of it to the southeast, on the other side of which is the exit to Sand People Territory; the exit to the Eastern Dune Sea is barely visible in the distance beyond the northeast end of the sandcrawler, on the left, where closer to the gate you'll also see a man surrounded by droids.

Sand People

Unless you really hug the boundaries of the Dune Sea or travel straight towards the sandcrawler, you're likely to encounter several Sand People ambushes:

  • The closest occurs as you approach a refuse pile with random contents visible to the right of the gate, to the south.
  • Another occurs as you travel further along the southwest side towards the tail of the sandcrawler.
  • The last ambush on the southwest side occurs as you approach a corpse with random contents beyond the tail of the sandcrawler.
  • The closest on the northeast side occurs as you approach a corpse with random contents beyond Tanis Venn and his droids to the southeast.
  • The furthest on the northeast side occurs as you approach a refuse pile to the northeast of the head of the sandcrawler.
Sand People: [A small group of Sand People ambush you!]

At character level < 12, the ambush consists of two melee Sand People Warriors and a ranged Elite Warrior:

You have acquired Sand People robes. They should allow you to pass yourself off as a Sand People warrior, at least from a distance. They may make entering the Sand People enclave a little easier. All of the non-droid members of your party would have to be wearing the robes for the disguise to work. Since you don't have robes big enough to fit Zaalbar, his presence would certainly give you away.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • 100 Aquired Sand People robes

Once Zaalbar is removed and all meatbag organic members of your party are wearing Sand People clothing then you'll no longer be ambushed.

Sand People Territory

The exit to Sand People Territory on the southeast side of the Dune Sea opposite Anchorhead is heavily guarded, with three melee Sand People Warriors and two ranged Elite Warriors: each Sand People Warrior killed results in another appearing from the dunes to the right of the exit, and these in turn are replaced so that you may have to kill 9 in total.

If you've been ambushed by Sand People at character level < 12 and received Sand People Clothing from the remains of the ranged Elite Warriors then once Zaalbar is removed and all meatbag organic members of your party are wearing it you won't be attacked, unless you try to speak:

[Your disguise fails at short range. The warrior attacks!]

Whether you leave them alone or engage one at a time after speaking, this is much easier. Otherwise, it's best to approach from the left, and ideally start attacking from range to engage a few at a time without getting overwhelmed:

Eastern Dune Sea

The exit to the Eastern Dune Sea is barely visible from Anchorhead, but it's to the left on the southeast, beyond the head of the sandcrawler. However, if you try to use it:

Eastern Dune Sea: [The Eastern Dune Sea continues to a barren horizon, but there are signs that people have passed this way. The occasional stone appears to be marking a path, but the logic of how they are placed is indecipherable to an outsider.]

Before you can enter you need to receive a map of the Eastern Dune Sea from the Sand People chieftain in their enclave or the Jawa chieftain Iziz inside the gate of Anchorhead, both of which require you to enter and cross Sand People Territory and enter their enclave.

Tanis Trapped

When you first exit Anchorhead, a woman named Marlena Venn awaits you. If you've already encountered her husband Tanis Venn in Anchorhead's hunting lodge then you may have some idea what to expect (particularly if your character is female):

Dialog
Marlena Venn: Hello there. You're heading out to the desert? You're a hunter right? You must be if you've been allowed to leave Anchorhead.
Marlena Venn: When you see Tanis, and I know you old boys always stick together, tell him his wife hopes he enjoys the anniversary gift. Marlena Venn: When you see Tanis, and I know you know him, tell him his wife hopes he enjoys the anniversary gift.
1. What do you mean by "you old boys"? 1. Why do you think I would know him?
Marlena Venn: You're just another of his buddies from that "hunting" club. I know your kind. You all cover for each other, I bet. Marlena Venn: Don't play dumb. You're just another of his playthings down at that "hunting" club. I know your type through and through.
Marlena Venn: Well, he can do what he wants. He'll get what he deserves. I bought my own license just so I could see that he did.
2. Anniversary gift? What are you talking about?
Marlena Venn: Just a little something to remember me by. Something that symbolizes our years together. Something that will blow up in his face. Of course, he'll never understand how appropriate it is. He can't talk his way out of this one. He's not smart enough.
3. Um, all right? What if he has a message for you?
Marlena Venn: Oh, I'll be long gone soon enough. The next shuttle to... anywhere, really. I've had it with cleaning up his messes, repairing his droids. If he lives, he can try and get by on his own. I doubt he'll last long with no one to listen to his lies.
2. You sound like you're planning to kill him.
Marlena Venn: Oh, I'm through planning. I just left him a little mess that he has to take care of. If he's smart, he'll be just fine. But he's not smart.
1. I have to go.
Marlena Venn: I'm sure you do. Like I said, when you see him, tell him his wife Marlena says hello.

The man himself can be seen surrounded by his four droids on the left to the southeast. Sure enough, as you approach him it becomes clear he needs assistance:

Tanis Venn: Anyone out there...? Could you help? I seem to be... ah... doomed.

If you try to interact with any of his droids before speaking to him:

Tanis Venn: Hold on there! How about talking to me before you go messing with those things? I need your help.

If you try to speak to him at any time while wearing Sand People Clothing:

Dialog
Tanis Venn: Oh great! You just get away from me! The last thing I need is Sand People trying to cut me up! Go on! I've got blasters!
1. Easy, I'm no threat. It's just a disguise. 2. [Leave]
Tanis Venn: Oh... yeah I, uh, I knew that. Tanis Venn: What the... uh, yeah! You just get out of here! Hey I... I guess I'm pretty scary... trapped, but scary.

Otherwise:

Dialog
Tanis Venn: Hey there, thanks for stopping. I appreciate it. I've been stuck without water for hours. Wasn't looking good.
Tanis Venn: I don't remember you from Fazza's club. You new to Anchorhead? Could you maybe help me get out of here? Tanis Venn: Oh, hey, it's you. I remember you at Fazza's place. Could I get you to help out a fellow hunter? Please? Tanis Venn: Could you... hey, I remember you. You're the young lady from Fazza's club. Talk about answered prayers. Tanis Venn: Now if you could... oh no... not you. Just my luck. Look, I don't want any trouble, just need a little help.
2. You're Tanis, right? Your wife says hello. 1. What happened here?
Tanis Venn: I'll bet she does. She's decided I've finally worn out my welcome, and she's "fixed" my droids to do her dirty work. Tanis Venn: Well, ah, it would appear that I worn out my welcome with my wife Marlena. She fixes my droids... heh, fixed them good this time.
Jolee: Philandering ways coming back to haunt him, I'll wager. HK-47: Commentary: One would hope the female is better at repairs than Yuka Laka. I still would like to crush his neck, master. Bastila: This should be interesting...
Tanis Venn: I triggered some sort of trap she programmed. She probably figured I wouldn't be smart enough to get out. Uh, she was right.
3. I don't have time for this right now. Goodbye.
Tanis Venn: What? Oh, right, thanks. I guess I'll just DIE! Come on, help a guy out!
Journal Entry Added Tanis Trapped
Tanis, a wraid hunter, is stuck in the desert, the victim of a trap laid by his estranged wife. His four droids have surrounded him, and unless someone repairs them, they will explode when he moves.

You should ask him what he wants you to do:

Dialog
Tanis Venn: So, uh... what's new? Uh, rescued anyone recently? You know, maybe someone trapped in the desert!

After asking what happened here again:

2. You sit back and let your droids do the hunting?
Tanis Venn: You know, now really isn't the time for a lecture. Of course, I might be more receptive after I'm rescued.
1. It just doesn't seem very sporting.
Tanis Venn: Look friend, some may talk about honor in the hunt, but they still sell their trophies. Tanis Venn: You're beautiful, but not too bright. I hunt to make a living. Other hunters talk about honor, but they still sell their trophies.
3. Why would she do this?
Tanis Venn: Something about me not following her archaic rules for proper conduct in a marriage. I swear, I never saw this coming.
1. You don't seem too concerned about what triggered this.
Tanis Venn: Hey, I'm the victim here. I'm not sure how divorce works where you're from, but this is a little extreme, don't you think?
1. What do you want me to do?
Tanis Venn: The wife put a kink in my battle droids. They're in some sort of discharge loop, and if I move from this spot, they're threatening to blow up. She knew I wouldn't know how to fix them. Could you try to do some repairs? They don't care if you move. It's just me who's stuck.
Carth: *sigh* I guess we should help him out.
Tanis Venn: Yes! Yes, I knew I liked this fella the minute I saw him.
Bastila: I say leave him.
Tanis Venn: You're pretty heartless for such a pretty lady, you know?
Bastila: I take it back. Let's congratulate his wife.
Jolee: Maybe we could program them to tap-dance? I love a good tap-dance.
Tanis Venn: This isn't funny! Come on!
HK-47: Commentary: I say we blast the meatbag and save you the trouble, master.
Tanis Venn: What's with all the droids, lately? My wife get to you, too?
HK-47: Negative. I just don't like organic meatbags. Except for the master, of course. Ha ha.
T3-M4: Beep! Beeple beep! Tanis Venn: I'd, ahh, really appreciate a bit of help. Please?
Tanis Venn: Hey yeah! You've got yourself a 'mech droid, there! Tell it to do it! Please!
T3-M4: *mechanical splurch... unflattering sound*
Tanis Venn: Hey, now... did your droid just spit at me? I just need a little help here.

You can tell him you're not doing anything for him and that he can rot here for whatever reason, and when he asks if you're kidding tell him you're not to move closer to the dark side of the Force:

Dialog
3. I'm not doing anything for you. You can rot here. 3. I've changed my mind. I'm not helping you.
Tanis Venn: What? Why? What did I do to you?
1. You don't respect the hunt. You are a disgrace. 2. It's better for the environment if I don't let you hunt. 3. It's the cruelest death. Maybe I'll watch while sipping ice water. 4. I just don't like you. Goodbye.
Tanis Venn: Oh, so this will be some sort of lesson for me, just because I don't "thank the bones" or some garbage? Tanis Venn: So my life is worth less than a few wraid? How many? One? Ten? Twenty? Tanis Venn: So you just want me to die? That is just... so... typical of the people I meet... and marry. Thanks a lot! Tanis Venn: Well, I suppose I couldn't ask for a more valid reason than that. That's all?! That's it?! What are you, my wife?
Tanis Venn: Well fine, I'll... stay pretty much right here I guess. You can just get lost. I'll... I'll... Heh heh. You're kidding, right. Right? Come on!
Dark Side Points Gained: -4
1. I'm not kidding. You'll die here.
Tanis Venn: Nobody looks out for their neighbor anymore. Well, if this is it, I'd rather get it over with and maybe take you out with me. So, let's see how these rigged-out droids like me jumping around. Hopefully the explosion kills you too!

The explosion inflicts 20 universal damage on you, and kills Tanis and his droids.

Although this moves you closest to the dark side of the Force, no experience whatsoever is received. Otherwise, you can help, or tell him that you want something in return. It's easy to persuade him to give up hunting with droids using skill or the Force, or you can tell him you'll help if he gives you credits:

Dialog
1. All right, I'll try and help out. Hold on. 1. All right, I'll see what I can do.
Tanis Venn: Phew! Don't scare me like that. All right, lesson learned, or whatever. Can you please try to get them going?

Otherwise:

2. I'll help, but I want something in return. 2. I've decided that I want something in exchange.
Tanis Venn: Uh, what did you have in mind? Tanis Venn: Well of course, darling. Anything at all.
3. One more "darling" and you'll be sorry, understand?
Tanis Venn: Uh, sure, I apologize. Uh, now, about what you wanted?
2. You'll have to give up hunting with droids.
Tanis Venn: Hey, wait for a moment. I need these rigs. I'm no marksman. No way I can agree to that. No way.
Easy 1. [Persuade] Look around. You don't have much choice. link=Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic}}/Force powers#Affect Mind 2. [Force Persuade] You will no longer use droids to hunt. Ever.
Tanis Venn: [Success] Well, when you put it like that. *ahem* Very well then, if it will get you to help me. Tanis Venn: [Success] I won't use droids. You have to make sure the hunt goes on, right? Eh, now, could you help?

If you're not persuasive enough, aside from just telling him you'll help, you can tell him you'll do so if he gives you credits:

Easy 1. [Persuade] Look around. You don't have much choice.
Tanis Venn: [Failure] I can't do it. That's my living. I'd have to leave this rock altogether. I can't do it.
2. I'll help if you give me credits. All you've got.
Tanis Venn: Hey, no problem, but it won't be a fortune or anything. I'd bet the wife has drained our shared accounts. Now uh, about that help?
Tanis Venn: Just access each droid's repair interface. You'll have to do some tinkering, but be careful. One explosion I can survive. Any more than one and I'm dead. Oh, and ignore the message Marlena left in there. No way do I deserve this, I swear.

If you speak to him again before he's been rescued:

Dialog
Tanis Venn: Well, nice to see you again. Ah, not to pressure you - certainly, no pressure - but you did say you'd rescue me.
Tanis Venn: I mean, I can certainly see how you'd want to keep me in one place. You ladies can be so coy...
Tanis Venn: It's just that I had hoped you could do this with a little more... I don't know... success? I won't survive another blast.
Tanis Venn: You asked for nothing in return... but really, soon would be nice. Tanis Venn: You asked for credits, after all. Speedy service would be nice. Tanis Venn: If you expect me to give up hunting, speedy service would be nice.
1. What was it I needed to do?
Tanis Venn: We've been over this, haven't we? My wife has put some kind of kink in my battle droids. If I move, they're threatening to explode. I haven't got a clue where to start. She knew I wouldn't. Please, repair them for me if you can.
4. I'll get to it soon enough.
Tanis Venn: Well, normally I'd be patient, but the constant threat of death is just so stressful. You know?

1. Allocate 110 large pulses. 2. Allocate 120 large pulses. 3. Allocate 135 large pulses. 3. Allocate 140 large pulses.
Answer
2. Allocate 120 large pulses.
100 small pulses have been used, so 200 remain: 300 small pulses = 180 large pulses, so 100 = 60 (/3) and 200 = 120 (*2).

Tanis is free to move. The trap left by his estranged wife has been disarmed. He'll be glad to hear it.

No experience is received for the final repair, so a light side character should repair three droids and then make the last self-destruct to receive items from its remains (the KX-12b Battle Droid's Security Interface Tool sells for the most credits). If you interact with a droid after the final repair:

Speak to Tanis to receive any reward. He responds to a female character who asked him to give up his trade as though she never asked him for anything, but since you only receive kudos from Komad Fortuna and Dorak Quinn if you speak to them in Anchorhead's hunting lodge for the former and credits for the latter, even a male gets no practical benefit from it:

Tanis Venn: That was... unpleasant. Thanks for your help. I would have been a goner. Heh, and the old bat thought I was dead. HA!
Tanis Venn: Now, my dear lady, I must see to your reward. Will, uh, earthly delights suffice? Er... I suppose not.
Tanis Venn: You never asked me for anything, but I consider my life worth something. Please, take this. I insist. Tanis Venn: You wanted credits for your trouble, and I never break a deal. Here's uh, all I have on me. Tanis Venn: You wanted me to give up my trade. Well, consider it done. Maybe I can rent my droids for security or something.

It's hard to persuade him to give more:

Dialog
2. I think I should ask for more. 3. You'll give me more or you will regret it.
Tanis Venn: I love it when the ladies play hard-to-please, but there isn't much more I can do. This is an expensive setback.

Dark Side Points Gained: -2
Tanis Venn: How did... how did you get me to do that? Damn, that's what got me married and into this mess! That's it, I'm leaving!
Tanis Venn: Now, if you don't mind, I have to limp these boys back to my shop. Hopefully Marlena didn't take the manuals with her.

1. That will be fine. Good luck. 1. All right. Just get out of here, then.

Accident Site

Beyond the head of the sandcrawler to the southeast is the site of an accident: two speeders to the east appear to have crashed, while another speeder to the west seems intact. The first sign that all might not be as it seems is that the northern approach is mined:

Awareness Average Frag Mine (2) Detect 30 (10) Demolitions Disable 25 (5) Recover 35 (15)

Between the three speeders are three refuse piles. Those to the northwest and southeast contain the following:

Item(s) Received Refuse Pile Item(s) Received Refuse Pile

Desert Ambush

The refuse pile to the northeast, between the two speeders, is booby-trapped. As you step between the speeders, you hear cries for help:

Don't let me die under here! Please! Anyone! I'm trapped under here! Please help me! Help! Please! Over here! Under the wreckage!

Before examining the refuse pile, it's best to step away from the speeders and enter Solo mode before returning with only your most robust party member. Once you interact with the northeast refuse pile:

Ambush Speaker: Please help! I can't get out! (click) 3... 2... 1.

The explosion inflicts 60 points of universal damage on Normal (90 on Difficult), and you're surrounded by the three Gamorreans Gurke, Narkal and Ugzak (who you might have already met (or at least been warned about) in Anchorhead's Hunting Lodge):

Dialog
Gurke: Haw haw! *snort* We gots you good now!
Narkal: *squeee!*
Gurke: We did a good ambush and you and you better pay... uh... maybe 500 credits now! You die otherwise!
1. And if I refuse to pay you anything?
Gurke: This isn't tough to figure out, you know. You don't pay, we bury you here!
Narkal: Yeah, out here in the sand!
2. Perhaps I could persuade you not to do this?
Gurke: What? Why would we stop? You look pretty weak right now. We got you good!

They'll leave you alone if you pay (although they only take your credits if you can pay the full amount):

3. Fine, I'll pay. Just leave me alone. 3. I don't have 500 credits.
Gurke: What? Then you pay whatever you got! Yeah!
Credits Lost: 500 1. Fine, here is every credit I have. Take it all.
Dialog
Gurke: Uh... you will? Of course you will! You roll over good! Gurke: Hmm... not much... but maybe that's good enough. You roll over good.
Narkal: Yeah, maybe we play with you again some time.
Gurke: Haw! Maybe! You go where you want, now. We won't hurt you. Haw! *snort*

In the unlikely event you have no credits whatsoever:

3. I don't have any credits. None at all.
Narkal: But... Gurke said you types have lots of money!
Gurke: Shut up! You got nothing? Bah! Then we kill you for your gear stuff!

If unwilling (or even unable) to pay, then it's hard to persuade them to leave you alone:

Dialog
Gurke: [Success] Hey, we get pretty good reputation if you run around all scaredy. Haw! I like it! Okay, we will leave you alone here. You count yourself lucky! Yeah, you real lucky. *snort* Gurke: [Success] We let you go now. We got what we wanted. Yeah, we sure did.
Narkal: Uh, Gurke? They didn't give us nothing.
Gurke: Shut up! We got what we wanted! Now we go! That's how this works! Yeesh. *snort*

Appeasing them also loses you the respect of the hunters back in Anchorhead's hunting lodge: although this is of little consequence, you earn their respect if you successfully intimidate the Gamorreans after suggesting you could be dangerous. Much more importantly, this is both easier and more rewarding:

Dialog
4. Who are you to threaten me? I could be dangerous.
Narkal: Uh... what? Gurke said they be easy picking!
Gurke: Shut up, stupid! *snort* They are just bluffing you! They got no hope at all!

Narkal: Gurke, are we leaving? Who's gonna pay for the ambush stuff? Narkal: They don't seem that scary to me, Gurke. You sure?
Gurke: Shut up, stupid! Just go. *snort* Gurke: Shut up and run, stupid! You want to die? Yeesh!

Jagi's Challenge

Once you've encountered Jagi after speaking to Canderous, Jagi will appear with two Rodian thugs behind the sandcrawler in the southwest corner of the Dune Sea when Canderous is with you:

Dialog
Jagi: Ah so you managed to come after all. I see you brought friends.
Canderous: You brought some of your own as well.
Jagi: Ha! Indeed I did. I foresaw that you might need help so I arranged a distraction.
1. I came by my own will. 2. Canderous works for me. 3. You talk too much and do little.
Jagi: I do not need to hear your excuses, Jedi! I know why he brought you! Jagi: Big words from such a small human. But I know why he brought you here, and you shall regret his choice!
Canderous: Enough of this talk, Jagi! Let us do what we came here to do.

You'll have multiple opportunities to end the dialog and engage in combat:

1. Let's do it, Canderous. 3. Let's kill him then. 3. I've had enough, let's kill him. 1. Then let's get rid of Jagi and his men.
Jagi: And you shall all die!

However, if you can be highly persuasive then you can receive much more experience later:

Dialog
2. I think you both need to calm down. 3. Both of you are acting like children!
Jagi: We both know the stakes here, and we both know what we must do. It is only in death that this can end. Jagi: Yes, but children who can... er... what?! You do not know what you're talking about, Jedi!
Canderous: This is a matter of honor. I cannot stand by this insult. I must do this.
1. Why do you need to fight him, Canderous? 2. Why do you need to fight Canderous, Jagi?
Canderous: He has slandered me and questioned my honor. Among the Mandalore, many have died for much lesser insults. Jagi: In the battle above the world of Althir, he ordered us to attack the enemy flank, promising us support. But when he saw better prospects for his own glory, he abandoned us and left us to die surrounded by enemies!
Jagi: I speak truth! And honor is the question here! The deaths of my comrades, your warriors, is a debt in blood that can only be paid by you. When you saw prospects for glory, you abandoned the plan and left us to die surrounded by enemies!
Canderous: If I had not attacked when I did, the battle would not have been won so easily!
Jagi: It would still have been won! You sent your own men to die there Canderous. I cannot forgive you for what you did to us! You will pay!
Canderous: That's not the way it happened...
1. You sent your own men to die, Canderous? 2. Why did you abandon them?
Canderous: The Althiri were fighting hard. I saw a break in their defenses that left their center exposed. I had to take the chance. If I had not done what I did, many more warriors would have died and the battle would have taken much longer. I stand by my decision.
Jagi: You coward! You glory hunter! You were given direct orders and were part of a plan! You had a responsibility to us!
Canderous: I... I can regret their loss, but it was necessary.
Hard 2. [Persuade] Jagi, what he did was a smart tactical move. Hard 3. [Persuade] People die in war, Jagi.
Jagi: I have had enough of your prattle, Jedi! This is between Canderous and I. And we shall settle this now once and for all.
link=Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic}}/Force powers#Affect Mind 4. [Force Persuade] You do not want to fight, Jagi. link=Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic}}/Force powers#Affect Mind 4. [Force Persuade] You do not want to fight, Jagi.
Jagi: [Success] Yes... I... do not want to fight... Jagi: [Failure] Don't try you mind tricks on me! A true Mandalore is too strong for that! And now you shall die for the attempt!
Canderous: No! Do not alter his mind to defend me! I can fight my own battles without your help!
Jagi: You... Wha? You tried to manipulate my mind with your devious Jedi powers! I cannot tolerate any interference! You shall die for that, Jedi!

If persuasion fails or you use the Force, the dialog ends in combat. Otherwise:

Hard 2. [Persuade] Jagi, what he did was a smart tactical move. Hard 3. [Persuade] People die in war, Jagi.
Dialog
Jagi: He left us to die when his responsibility was to us! Instead he went hunting more glory for himself! Jagi: They do... I know that, but he did not have to abandon us! He should have stayed with the plan!

The following responses also end in combat:

3. Maybe he shouldn't have left you. 3. He probably should have.
Canderous: I saw my chance to end the battle quickly and I took it. I regret the men I lost, but it was necessary.
Jagi: Then you know we must end this now.
Canderous: We must.

Otherwise:

1. He may have saved other lives by doing what he did. 2. He was trying to end it quickly.
Jagi: He cost us ours! But... but I do see you point... Jagi: At the cost of our lives? He may have saved others in the long run, but... but...
Jagi: But... Why did you have to leave us there to die while you chased glory somewhere else?
Canderous: I saw a chance and had to take it. It ended the battle quicker than we would have otherwise, and many of our warriors may have died. Mandalore taught us that opportunism and flexibility in battle were to be admired. You may contradict me, but do you contradict him as well?
Jagi: No! I... I... I see that I have been wrong. I have not been true to the teachings of Mandalore. You were right. I was wrong to question your honor. But I must now cleanse mine with my life.
1. No! 2. You do not have to do this! 3. Good riddance!
Canderous: And so it shall be.
Journal Entry Added Jagi's Challenge

Sandcrawler

Standing at the base of the sandcrawler on its north side is a mining team captain, flanked by a miner on either side: do not approach them if any member of your party is wearing Sand People clothing, as they'll attack rather than speaking to you.

Miner
These Sand People are vicious. They attacked without any reason.
They were like animals. It was horrible.
Dozens of them attacked. I think the Captain's afraid there are more out there.
Barely got a shot off. That Captain will tell you all about it.
Out of nowhere, they came! I don't think the Captain even saw them coming.
Well, you should speak with the Captain. He's the only officer we've got left.
Dialog
Mining Team Captain: Who are you? Ah. It doesn't matter. Can you handle a blaster? They may attack again at any second. I doubt we could hold out on our own against another wave of them.
1. I would assume this was done by the Sand People? 2. You miners are cowards. A single attack wiped you out?
Mining Team Captain: You would be right. Came out of nowhere. Wait... Damn it! Here they come again! How do they do that! Mining Team Captain: Nothing in the job description covers this. Wait... well I guess we'll see how you fare. Here they come again!

Once you've spoken briefly to the mining team captain, four Sand Warriors attack from the northwest. At character level < 12 these are the same as those encountered in ambushes, otherwise they receive bonuses depending on your character level:

Once the last warrior is killed, another four attack from the west; once the last of those is killed, the same thing happens.

If the miners survive the attacks, you can speak to them again:

Miner
What choice do we have? They have to be killed. All of them.
How am I supposed to make a living with this going on?
They should all be wiped out. Every last one of them.
Is it safe? Heh. Is anywhere safe? I don't think so.
I guess I'm lucky to be alive. No more of this for me, that's for sure.
Thanks for your help. I hope there's no more of those animals out there.

You can ask the mining team captain about the Sand People:

Dialog
Mining Team Captain: Thanks for your help. I don't think we'll try holding this position for much longer. We're not soldiers. Did the company send you? It's about time they drove these animals out!
1. I've agreed to try and stop the Sand People attacks.
Mining Team Captain: Well you've got a lot of work ahead of you. Do you know about their enclave in the south? Don't even try to go near it. They've taken all the Czerka weapons that were supposed to protect our sandcrawlers. That place is a fortress. A death trap. You'll have to find some way to sneak into the place. Glad it's not my job.
2. I have other questions about the desert.
Mining Team Captain: I don't have time for this sort of thing. I'm through with the desert. You can take your Sand People, krayt dragons, and crazy hunters.
1. Do you know anything about the Sand People?
Mining Team Captain: Just that they attack everything on sight. Well, I suppose they don't attack each other, but any outsider is as good as dead. The company tried to arm us, and even set up remote self-powered turrets on the mining route, but...but that just made things worse. We're not soldiers. They still kill us, and then take our weapons off our corpses. They even had the Jawas disable the turrets and set them around their enclave. It's like a fortress now. I don't know how you're going to break through all of that. Me, I'd sneak in. Well, actually, I would just get back to Anchorhead.
1. The Sand People are using turrets?
Mining Team Captain: They use whatever they scavenge. They seem to hate our technology, but they love to turn it against us. That goes for blasters and turrets too, I guess. It's not like you need to be a genius to operate them. They probably don't even bother with special settings. They just watch for people approaching and switch them on.
3. I have to go.
Mining Team Captain: Yeah, so do we. There's no way we're repairing this thing while getting attacked over and over. The desert can have it. Ah, the Jawas will salvage it eventually anyway. Then we can buy it back and start over. Heh. Makes sense to me.

There's a refuse pile to the right by the rear track of the sandcrawler:

They stand and walk in a line, and it's best to approach and attack the head or tail from range, picking them off one or two at a time rather than being overwhelmed, unless you're able to use area of effect Force powers to debilitate and then damage them.

Item(s) Received Wraid
  • Desert Wraid Skull Plate

This is the incredibly dense bone skull plate cut from a desert wraid. They are rumored to have medical uses, but the market for them is very specific.

When you return to the area, a new group of wraid appears to the northeast at the head of the sandcrawler; the next group then appears to the northwest of its tail, and then their location returns to its original position.

By returning to the Ebon Hawk and then transiting back it's possible to efficiently hunt the wraid by following them around the sandcrawler in an anti-clockwise direction. The experience received can help to level up:

Required Level 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20
XP Needed 12000 13000 14000 15000 16000 17000 18000 19000
XP per Hulak Wraid 550 500 450 400 350 300 250 200
Hulak Wraid Killed 22 26 32 38 46 57 72 95

Although gaining experience exclusively from wraid hunting could be extremely tedious and unnecessary, it may help if you want to level up your character or party members a little before facing a particular challenge. It can also be somewhat lucrative, as Desert Wraid Skull Plates can be sold for 64 credits each on Yavin Station, and 24 credits apiece elsewhere:

Required Level 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20
Hulak Wraid Killed 22 26 32 38 46 57 72 95
Yavin value 1408 1664 2048 2432 2944 3648 4608 6080
Other value 528 624 768 912 1104 1368 1728 2280

However, if you really need credits then the possibilities of trade, swoop racing and Pazaak should be exhausted first...
