Go to the Pokémon school (to the north of the Pokémon Center) and look around; it's got some good tips, especially if you're not familiar with the Pokémon franchise of games.

The man in the house to the left and down from the Pokémon center will give you an Onix if you give him a Bellsprout.

Go to Sprout Tower at the north of the map before finding your way to the Violet City Gym.
