The Celestial weapons are the most powerful available for each character, and although not essential to the main story, can greatly help you in battle. The real use of these weapons comes when completing the Monster Arena or Dark Aeon sidequests, where the weapons' attack bonuses and abilities will be essential to complete the quests. The Celestial Mirror, a powered up form of the Cloudy Mirror, is necessary to collect and power up the weapons.

The Cloudy Mirror[edit]

The first step in obtaining the Celestial weapons is to obtain the 'Cloudy Mirror', which is fortunately a relatively simple task. Go to the Calm Lands, and seek out a lady riding a chocobo: she is often found by the cliffs to the west, or by the Al Bhed store in the center of the Calm Lands. Approach her and ask if you can ride a chocobo, ignoring the option to train a chocobo for the time being (this is only required to power up Tidus' Celestial weapon). Like Mi'ihen highroad you will have no encounters and travel a lot faster on a chocobo, however at the Calm Lands it is free to ride the chocobo.

Riding your chocobo, return to the entrance from Macalania Woods, but instead of going back to Macalania, keep heading slightly further east to find a broken bridge with a chocobo feather lying on the ground next to it. Examine the feather and your chocobo will jump down to a previously inaccessible plateau (to get down examine the next chocobo feather), so continue the short distance to the exit from this plateau to find yourself at the impressive Remiem Temple. Inside, you will find not only a hidden (but currently locked) Aeon, but also Belgemine. To find out more about this go to the Remiem Temple page.

To get the Cloudy Mirror from here is not going to be difficult for you. Exit the temple, but instead of crossing the bridge back to the Calm Lands go around to the left side of the temple to find a sphere laying on the ground next to a chocobo. Examine the sphere to learn the rules of this new mini-game:

  • You must beat the other chocobo to the center of the course to obtain a prize.
  • The more chests you open the better your prize will be.
  • If you touch any poles you get the same prize as having opened no chests.

There are 5 chests, and you will get a different prize (once only) for each number of chests opened. Once you have obtained the cloudy mirror it's well worth repeating the race to open 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 chests (and 5 if you can, although it is rather difficult) to obtain some brilliant prizes to help customize your armor/weapons. However, to obtain the Cloudy Mirror all you need to do is beat the other chocobo to the finish, so examine the chocobo on the right to board it and make your way to the center as quickly as possibly to get your prize.

The Celestial Mirror[edit]

Now that you have the Cloudy Mirror, you must power it up for it to become the Celestial Mirror which will allow you to start collecting and powering up the weapons. Go to the entrance of Macalania Woods from the Thunder Plains, and talk to the woman and child that are there. They will inform you of their missing husband, who is currently at the campsite (where you came to directly after Bevelle). Go right from the entrance to get there (if you need more help finding him, see the revisited section of the Macalania Woods walkthrough page), and tell him that his family are looking for him.

Go back to where you found the mother and son before, at the entrance to the woods. Talk to the mother and father a few times until they mention their missing son. Notice the glistening path to the left; this is a shortcut to Lake Macalania that will save you from a lot of fiend encounters, as well as prevent you from getting lost. This path also leads to the place where you can power up your weapons. Follow the path until you find the son blocking a small path off the side of the main path; talk to him to get him to go back to his parents. Go up this short path and examine the large plant at the end, which will upgrade the Cloudy Mirror into the Celestial Mirror.

Powering Up the Weapons[edit]

Now that you have the Celestial Mirror, you will be able to obtain the Celestial weapons for each character (for example you are now able to open the chest outside the Monster Arena that appears after catching everything in Mount Gagazet & Gagazet Cave) and power up each one by two levels. Each weapon is powered up first by its relevant Crest, then its relevant Sigil. Detailed locations of all the weapons, Crests, and Sigils can be found on each individual character page or a short summary found below.

When you first obtain each Celestial Weapon, it will have only one ability slot filled with the 'No AP' ability. This ability prevents you from gaining AP after battles. Powering the weapons up will solve this problem. When you have the correct Crest and/or Sigil for a weapon, go back and examine the plant on the shimmering path in the Macalania Woods once again. You will be presented with a choice of characters for whom you can upgrade the weapons. Select a character and if you have the correct Crest the weapon will be powered up one level. It will now have the 'Triple Overdrive' ability — still not much use. Return with the Sigil however and the weapon can be powered up to its maximum, losing the No AP ability, and gaining in its place 'Break Damage Limit' and 2 other useful abilities relevant to the character.

Each powered up weapon may also let an Aeon break the damage limit, and has an attack bonus (e.g. more attack power when percentage of HP is higher).

Finally, remember that you may only power up a weapon with a Sigil after it has been powered up by the Crest, and that Celestial weapons cannot be sold or customized.
