The original [[Resident Evil]] made its debut in Japan on [[March 22]], [[1996]], and was later released in the U.S., where it became a huge success. [[Resident Evil 2]] and [[Resident Evil 3: Nemesis]] were immediately developed following the popularity of their predecessor, and were released in [[1998]] and [[1999]], respectively. The fourth game in the series, [[Resident Evil Code: Veronica]], was released in [[2000]] for the [[Sega Dreamcast]], and became the first Resident Evil title released for a non-Sony platform.
 
The series' creator, Shinji Mikami, decided to make the series exclusively for the [[Nintendo GameCube]]. The next three games in the series: a [[Resident Evil (GameCube)|remake]] of the original Resident Evil, the prequel [[Resident Evil Zero]] (originally planned as a [[Nintendo 64]] game) and [[Resident Evil 4]], were exclusive to the GameCube. Currently, [[Resident Evil 5]] is the next planned game in the series, and is expected to be released some time in [[2009]].
