Due to being a. DS game it has the capability of utilizing the touch screen, this is required for pretty much the whole game, however, movement, as explained by an NPC in the beginning of the game, can be controlled with either the D-pad or touch screen.

The actual action of the game, captures, use the touch screen and stylus as the method of capturing Pokemon. It is necessary to own a stylus and functioning touch screen.
