Gameplay[edit]

The game is played on a single screen from a top-down view. The player can move horizontally or vertically. Bombs placed by the player detonate after three seconds, exploding in all four directions, damaging opponents caught in the blast. The objective is to destroy all enemies while acquiring Power-ups through destructible walls (Soft Blocks) and fallen enemies, without getting hit by attacks, non-Bombermen collisions or explosions. If one or more bombs detonate next to each other's blast range, they will successively explode in a chain reaction.

Creating and avoiding traps through bomb placement and map comprehension as the player acquires new Power-ups is essential to progress through the game.

Normal Game[edit]

Normal game has six worlds each with its own set of enemies. Barring World 5, each world has eight stages where the player must destroy all enemies and reveal the exit to finish a stage, until the seventh stage. Stage eight always contains bosses. Exploding the exit spawns new enemies from it, which stay invincible for four seconds as they move around the arena. The player cannot exit without destroying all enemies.

World 5 is different from others due to the lack of Soft Blocks, one single arena and fights with several evil Bombermen, making it a boss rush of sorts. Power-ups are dropped randomly and the timer only freezes for a few seconds after each evil Bomberman dies.

Normal Game can be played by one or two players. In two player mode, the goal is to work cooperatively to defeat foes, although there is friendly fire present. The game keeps a password system so that the player can save the game after all of the Bombermen stock (extra lives) deplete.

Battle Mode[edit]

Battle mode is played from one to four players, be them human players or game-controlled AI. Here, the objective is to beat the other players and be the one to stay alive. The last player alive will win the round and a gold trophy. Players can set the maximum amount of gold trophies to win the game in best of (n) matches, where n = (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Each round has a time limit of 2 minutes. After 1 minute, the game displays and sounds a warning message, cornering the arena with indestructible walls clockwise from top to bottom. If any of these walls fall upon any player, they will be instantly destroyed.

The Battle Mode can be extremely fast and hectic, requiring quick reflexes and fast thinking. Players can choose a total of twelve different arenas, each with unique traps and ground mechanics.
