Walkthrough[edit]

Heading East: With everyone assembled, visit the shop in Patanta, and purchase the Flame Helmet for the Hero, the best helmet that he can wear. Then stay at the inn if necessary to restore everyone's health, and save your game. When you're ready, step outside and walk a short distance to the east. You will see a cave (location 5-D). Enter it and take the underground passage below the river to the land on the other side. Remember that you can't sail without first breaking up into parties of two, and there's nothing to fear in the passage.

Gobi: Once you reach the other side, head to the right until you reach the desert. Then carefully make your way north around the desert, so as not to touch the dangerous volcanic sections that surround a small shrine in the middle. The town of Gobi (location 4-F) is found north of this shrine. In Gobi, you'll find a bunch of unintelligible, but harmless goblins. There are some women who live there who will tell you that the shine to the south is where Yodada lives, and that the entrance is closed until the scrolls are complete. You'll also learn that the lake where the transport crashed is to the north. Two strong pieces of equipment are sold in Gobi; the Flame Armor for the Hero, and the Magic Sword for Kupikupi. Stop and fight enemies around Gobi if necessary to purchase these items. The enemies close to Gobi are reasonable, but watch out if you wander too far away; Silver Knights and Hell Ghosts can be pretty tough if you are only around level 12 or 13.

The crashed transport: A woman in Gobi mentioned that the transport crashed in a lake to the north. If you head north from Gobi, you see a small body of water off to the right, with what looks like a small island in the middle. There is a cave off the east side of the lake which you can use to tunnel over to the island. Go from one cave to the next, and you will actually find yourself inside the crashed transport. Use the Gold Key to unlock the door, and approach the top. You will see two treasure chests, but as you get close to them, you will be attacked by a creature known as "Bat Man". It is capable of doing large amounts of damage with each hit, but it has a tendency to cast Aura Shield and protect itself from harm instead. With all four characters attacking a single target, it won't stand many rounds unshielded. Heal anyone who takes damage and explore the chests. The right chest contains a Tent, while the left chest contains the Fireproof clothes, which you'll make use of shortly. Be careful, as it's possible to trigger another fight with a Bat Man. Exit the transport.

Yodada's shrine: Another women in Gobi mentioned that the shrine to the south is where Yodada lives. The traveling monks who told you about the two scrolls said to bring them to Yodada. Now that you have the fireproof clothing, it's possible to travel over the volcanoes to reach the shrine without taking damage. Walk up to the volcanic tiles, and use the fireproof clothes before you set foot on them to avoid taking any damage. Approach the entrance and enter the shrine (location 5-F). Walk up and speak with Yodada. In exchange for the Scroll of Earth and the Scroll of Heaven, you will be given the Key of Light, which is necessary to enter the floating castle.

Two destinations south: There are ruins and a town across the river to the south of the shrine. If you don't want to split the party up, you'll have to travel back to Patanta and travel south before traveling east to hit the ruins, and the town of Pongo, and then reverse course. However, if you're willing to go through the hassle to temporarily split the party up, and travel across the river in two teams of two, you'll save a significant amount of time. From the shrine, head to the east and follow the river until a town comes into view. Have the Hero and Kupikupi depart from the party and join together to sail across the river. Then have Poyon and Babubabu sail across as well and rejoin with the others. The town of Pongo is a hot spring destination for old women (location 5-H). The shop sells Ice Armor which you should purchase for Poyon. Then exit from the town, and head south following the mountain range until you reach a small body of water jutting out from the mountain to the west. Then begin heading west until you reach what looks like a large dome (location 7-E). Head inside, and you'll find another set of ruins. The locked door in the middle building can be unlocked with the Gold Key. Inside, you'll find a chest containing Dynamite. The lower room of the right building contains a guy who says the door above won't open and nobody has the key. It turns out it's a good thing you just found Dynamite. Walk around to the door and use it to blast the door open. Inside, you'll find a Dead Priest who sells the cursed Demon equipment, as well as the Calico Fruit which can revive a fallen character.

Hampsten Castle: Your next destination is a little out of the way, and it's not entirely necessary, but it's good training. From the ruins, you want to head straight west until you see a cave (location 7-B). Step inside the cave, and unlock the door with a Gold Key. As you walk across, you will be forced into a "Devil's formation" stage. Use any of the characters to defeat the relatively weak enemies that you face here, and then proceed to the left to exit. You will arrive inside of an island that is surrounded by mountains on the coast line, making it impossible to sail here. The castle is found in the southern tip (location 9-B). When you arrive, the castle won't look like much, and two people will be wandering around. One will tell you that there's a secret in the floor. If you push against the edges of the room, particularly in the upper right corner, you will find a secret passage that leads to a staircase. Take the staircase, and you will find the secret underground area that serves as the castle proper. Down here, you can talk to a lot of people to learn a bit more about the four person boat. You'll also learn that up in the north west corner of the island is a shop where you can buy Tents, and this shop is boat accessible. You can even speak with the emperor, but all he can offer you is encouragement and nothing more. The shop sells a lot of good equipment, but most of it is weaker than what you already have. The Dagon's Spear for Poyon is worse than the Sword of Power that you bought in Banaya, and the Dragon Suit for the Hero is worse than the Flame Armor that you picked up in Gobi. Only purchase the Messiah Mantle for Kupikupi if you can afford it, but don't worry too much about saving up for it since there's better armor available. Then rest up and save, and exit the castle.

Bring the Tongue Twister Medal here to get the Puka-ship

The Puka-Ship: At this time, you should return to Rolan Castle. From Hampsten, head north until you reach the cave, and pass through it to complete the "Devil's formation" encounter. On the other side, head south until you reach the cave that Poyon took to meet Kupikupi for the first time. Pass through that cave, doing another "Devil's formation" in the process, and exit through the bottom. Walk south and return to Rolan Castle. Break off into a team of the Hero and Poyon, and make sure that the pair have at least one boat, the Whale Whisker, and the Tongue Twister Medal. Hop in a boat and sail south of Rolan until you see the single coral reef outcropping. Park the boat above it and use the Whale Whisker. Moby Bick will appear and attack you. Defeat the giant whale in combat, and you will appear inside the whale. Sail up to the small section at the top where an old man is waiting. This old man is Zeze-pet, and before he will help you with anything, he will challenge you to a tongue twister battle. However, if you have the Tongue Twister Medal in your possession, he will realize that you're already a master, and he will apologize and provide you with the Puka-Ship. With this ship, you can now sail with all four people at one time. Regrettably, you can't free up space in your inventory by selling off the old boats.

Collecting missed equipment: There are some items that you may not have been able to afford, or simply didn't have the right people with you, which you should now attempt to collect before proceeding. The first item is in Bendal Belday Castle. The easiest way to get there is to hop in the Puka-Ship and transport everyone north along the western ocean until you reach the castle. Then step inside, walk up to the top counter, and purchase the Flame Shield for the Hero. Rest and save, and hop back in your ship. Next stop is Reharetta Castle in the North East corner of the world. Sail east along the northern ocean to reach Reharetta, and then visit the two merchants near the top counter. Buy the Earth Armor (which is a mistranslation, it should be Air Armor) and the Air Shield for Kupikupi, from each of the vendors. Lastly, sail south along the eastern ocean until you make it back to Baltarie with its mountain-lined coast. Here, you'll want to pick up an Air Helmet for Kupikupi, and the Water Cap and Purity Shield for Poyon. This will set you back quite a lot, so you may have to grind for the Pearls, or sell off any Pearl Coins you may have in your possession.

Island hopping: After finishing up in Baltarie, walk west around the mountains and follow them to the south until the coast is accessible. Then hop in the Puka-ship and sail east until you reach the top of a small island. On the island is a cave, and in the cave you'll find a chest containing a Soldier's Friend. Exit the cave, and sail south for a bit until you can round the corner of the coastline on the mainland and sail into the inlet to the west. Continue sailing on between the two caves and then sail north for a bit until an island that resembles a skull comes into view. On this island are two cave entrances for nostrils, but they both lead to the same cave. In the cave you will find two locked chests. The left chest can be opened with the Silver Key, and it actually contains another Gold Key. The right chest is locked with the Gold Key, and it contains the Calico Fruit which brings a fallen member back from the dead. A second Gold Key may not seem useful at first, but if you have to split your party up, each group can have a copy.

Roche Castle: Your next destination is Roche Castle, which is on an island lined with mountains, so it in inaccessible by boat. The only way to reach it is through the passage found between Toinon Village, and the head statue where the Hero met the Travelling Monk. From the skull island, sail south to revisit the land where you began your adventure as the hero, and head west until you find the cave that contains the underground passage to Roche (location 10-J). Inside, you'll have to unlock the door with the Gold Key. Then proceed to the north end, and head northeast to find Roche Castle. Inside you'll find two shops, many citizens with information, and a king behind a door locked with a Silver Key. The king will sadly report that he intended to help you by sending fireproof clothing, but that the transport crashed in a lake to the north. Since you already have the clothing, this is of little consequence. On the right side of the castle, you'll find a thirsty man. Give him water from a canteen, and he will allow you to follow a path along the outside of the castle which leads to a chest. In the chest is an Iron Ax, an item that you need and not a weapon for you to use. From the two shops, you'll want to purchase the Magma Sword for the Hero, the Holy Clothes for Poyon, and the Earth Helmet and Earth Shield for Babubabu. Once again, this will require a significant amount of Pearls that you may have to grind for, but the added protection will be necessary.

Come here with the Space-Time Ring to access the Floating Castle

Floating castle: Before the Iron Ax will be useful to you, you need to find the King Sword. In order to do this, you need to find the location where the Space-Time Ring is to be used. In Baltarie, someone mentioned that you must use the ring in the middle of the forest, and the largest forest by far lies to the west of Stogg. Your destination is the ring of mountains deep within the forest. It lies directly north of Pongo village, across a river and north of the mountain range. You must now make your way back to the north. You can take a safe route by travelling to the east and then heading north where the enemies are weaker, or you can try to cut across the volcanic region directly above Roche castle. Be warned that the enemies in this region are quite strong, and you may need to rely on Babubabu's Escape skill to get away safely (don't forget to heal him after using it.) Make your way back to the ruins where you found a Pearl Coin, and then head straight west until you reach the ring of mountains. A cave is found on the left side (location 4-H). Enter the cave and you'll find a locked door. To unlock it, you must use the Key of Light. When you take the stairs on the other side, a man will suggest that you find your companions before disappearing. Proceed to the right, and out one more cave, and you will reach the interior of the mountains. Stand on the orange desert tile and use the Space-Time Ring to be transported to the floating castle in another time. You'll have to wander around to the right or the left to reach the top where the sole occupant stands and waits for your arrival. He will present you with the Sword of Kings, and then he will impart a lot of cruicial information to you. The Queen and King Swords combine to make the most powerful sword, the Blade of Love, and it is the only weapon that can beat Fat Badger. However, the only person who can combine the swords to make the Blade of Love is a blacksmith named Rabin, and he is currently being held prison by Fat Badger in his castle. You must rescue him in order to create the blade. In order to access Fat Badger's castle, you will need the help of the mermaids, and in order to reach the mermaids, you need the Key of Dagon.

Bring the Queen and King Blades to the Pixie shrine

Pixie shrine: At this time, exit the castle, and pass back through the cave to reach the outside of the mountain ring. Then travel east until you reach the ruins, and head south to the river below. Use the Puka-ship to float across the river to the land below. This time, you must travel through the volcanic region to the south. As you do, watch the mountain range on the west side, and look for a cave entrance nestled in the mountains (location 7-K). This entrance is the pixie shrine. When you enter, a pixie at the bottom will inform you that only those who possess both the Queen and King Blades will receive help. Use the Puka-ship to travel across the water to the opposite side, where another pixie is waiting. This one will notice that you have both swords, and she will reward you with the Earthworm's Tear, which you will need to rescue the mermaids.

Rescue the mermaid from Dagon

Mermaid shrine: With the Earthworm's Tear in hand, it's time to pay a visit to the much talked about Mermaid shrine. From the island which contains Roche Castle, sail west along the river until it forks, and follow the water north. Stay in the boat, as the monsters in the surrounding area are quite powerful. When you get to the very top, you must hop out of the boat, walk up to the water and use the boat again to reach the cave (location 7-I). Inside the cave, you must unlock the door with the Key of Dagon. Then follow the path as it spirals to the center. Use the boat to cross the water surrounding the mermaid, and as you step off to approach her, you will be attacked by Dagon, a very powerful boss. Be sure all of your characters are at full health, and are wearing the best armor available, and you should be able to defeat Dagon in three turns, if not two. In appreciation, the mermaid will wish to help you, but fears she cannot with the Earthworm's Tear. Then she will notice that you have it, and cause the Turban Shell Tank to appear. Escape from her platform and walk around to the tank. Enter the tank, and it will tunnel its way through the earth to another cave. Speak to the man in the cave and he will warn you that you will begin to face the strongest enemies in the game.

Throw the Iron Ax from Roche Castle in this lake

Fairy lake: When you exit the cave, you will be on a remote island (location 9-F). Hop in your Puka-ship, and start sailing to the east. When you arrive on land, begin following the terrain to the north. Eventually, you will see a lake on the west side, with a narrow path that leads to the heart of the lake (location 8-H). Stand at the end, and choose to use your Iron Ax at this time. You will throw the Axe in, and a fairy will appear. She will ask if you threw in a Golden Ax. You must say no because the ax was made of iron and not gold. If you say yes, the fairy will accuse you of lying and instead of helping you, you will be attacked by a Pink Dagon. Instead, keep saying no as she asks if the ax was silver or copper, and in reward for your honesty, she will provide you with the Staff of Earth, which you must place in the navel of Earth to gain access to Fat Badger's castle.

Finding Fat Badger's Castle: You're almost ready to head to the castle, but if you notice the enemies nearby causing a lot of damage, you may wish to stay in the vicinity and level up a bit before you continue. Ideally, you should shoot for a minimum level of 17 for the majority of your party. By this level, both Kupikupi and Babubabu will learn the valuable Barrier spell which protects your entire party. Fortunately, there's a hotel nearby. To find it, head east from the fairy lake until you hit a mountain range. The follow the range north and then east until you reach a cave (location 7-J). You'll find the hotel in this cave. The manager will ask if you will ever stop doing things for free. Say yes, and he will let you stay there for free. When you're ready, head north from here. You will see Fat Badger's Castle surrounded by mountains, but there a small path cut into the southeast corner of the moutains. Walk down this path, and use the Staff of Earth at the dead-end to remove the mountain, and proceed to the castle (location 6-J).

Reaching the castle: Finding the castle was the easy part. Getting into it will be a bit tougher. The castle is surrounded by a set of tiles, all of which lead to a "Devil's formation." However, these formations are unlike any you've encountered in the past. While all other formation feature the weakest enemies that you can easily defeat, this formation features the strongest enemies that you've encountered. As such, it is remarkably difficult to get through this formation for most of the characters. A different strategy is required. First, Give every Lucky Bell in your inventory to the Hero. Second, use Kupikupi to save the game before you set foot on one of these tiles. You're going to want to reset and start over if the formation you end up in has five or more enemies (not including the boss). You should be able to manage if it only has three or four. Assuming this is the case, advance the Hero diagonally up one side of the formation, and leave every other character at the bottom. You may wish to advance Poyon one space up just in case so that Kupikupi and Babubabu don't get attacked, as they likely won't survive, and Poyon's chances are only slightly better. Keep sending the Hero up with the intention of going around the regular enemies and attacking the boss. The enemies will still intercept the hero, and you will be forced to fight. If you think that the Hero has a chance of defeating an enemy and staying alive, use regular attacks. However, whenever you go up against an enemy that is too strong, particularly the boss, use a Lucky Bell. Even against the boss, a Lucky Bell means an instant win.
