Calburn (カルバーン)[edit]
Noteable Villager Gossip:
- Calburn Castle can be found east of town, but the drawbridge is up so there is no way of getting in.
- A very powerful Dark Knight, Brocken, is currently at the castle.
- Dark Knights are said to have the strength of 100 ordinary soldiers.
- The town elder was once a court mage at the castle.
- A child was recently attacked by a monster outside of town and is currently being treated at the Elder's house.
Go to the Elder's house at the south end of town. The elder first mistakes the heroes for bandits, but when they ask about Johnny, he leads them to the child. Johnny is doing well, and Jay asks the elder if he will continue to watch over him. The Elder and agrees, on the condition that the heroes help him in return. The Elder needs to get to the village of Linger, which can only be accessed by going through Castle Calburn. Fortunately, because he once worked in the castle, the Elder knows of a secret passage via the underground waterway; the entrance of which just happens to be the well in his backyard. The Elder now joins the party as a guest member, stating that he is still a young man (which his wife finds highly dubious).
Make preparations and enter the well.
Calburn Underground Waterway (カルバーンの地下水路)[edit]
First off, the treasure. Pay no mind to the elder's commands, they aren't very specific anyways. At the start, take the path directly below the entrance ladder until you spot a chest: Healing Tonic. Continue down the same path as before and at the bottom, you'll bump into another chest: Titanium Sword (チタンソード). Follow the path right and north until you see the third chest: Iron Helmet (鉄の兜). To the very near right of that chest is another: then head all the way left for a chest: Bible.
Backtrack all the way to the entrance ladder and head all the way left for the fifth chest: Hoof of the Heavenly Horse (天馬の蹄). Head south a bit for the sixth chest: Feather Cap (羽帽子). Now, take the southeast path from that chest and then the first path to the right. At the next fork, head all the way south and follow the long and winding path to the final chest: Healing Tonic. From here, head north to run into a group of ninja.
Battle against 5 Ninja
After the ninja flee, proceed north and you'll wind up in Calburn Castle.
Calburn Castle (カルバーン城)[edit]
Head to the left where the tables are to find a save point that will also restore your health, TP and MP. Take either the left or right path down and in the middle of the room you'll find a chest: Megatonic (メガトニック). Now head south out the castle doors. The elder says that the operating rooms for the drawbridge are at both ends of the castle wall.
Head left for a chest with another Megatonic. Then head into the obscured doorway found in the southwest corner. Upon examination of the switch in this room, the party learns that the drawbridge can only be lowered if the four armor statues on the top floor are activated. Return to the room that contained the first chest and take the stairs on the right up to the next floor.
One of the ninjas from before will spot you, but rather than fighting, he'll opt to run away. Keep heading up until you spot a chest: ??? (ダーナブレス). Now head up the nearby stairs to the third floor. Grab the chest: Health Berry (体カのべリー) and head back down. Go left from there and you'll see another chest: Sachet (匂い袋). Head left even further and up the stairs. Grab the chest: Heavenly Wing (天馬の翼) - which allows you to warp to any previously visited town - and head back down once again. Finally, head up the stairs in the lower center of the room.
Enter the door before you. Brocken will identify Jay as "The Deserter"; a charge that Jay once more claims he has no idea about. When asked where Emmy and Carl are being held, Brocken states that they have been transferred to Amber Rose Castle. The Dark Knight then adds that the information is moot, however, as he plans to execute the two of them right here and now.
Battle with Brocken (ブロッケン)
With Brocken defeated, you can now examine four armor statues in the room and unlock the drawbridge controls. Once finished with that, return to the western drawbridge control room on the ground floor and flip the switch. The Elder will now mention that Amber Rose Castle lies to the east, but that going there now would prove very dangerous. Instead, he suggests that the party first meet with a great mage named "Bethlehem" in Linger, and then reconfirms that you still intend to take him there. When prompted, choose the left option to answer "yes". With the west drawbridge now lowered, head to the eastern room on the opposite side and flip the switch there as well to lower the eastern drawbridge. Exit from this new opening.
From Calburn Castle, head east towards a mountain range, and then south to the village of Linger.
