Objectives[edit]

Power up[edit]

You will arrive by the large tree. The trunk contains a hidden entrance, but the man inside won't teach you much. Your first objective should be to power up. You'll want to try to claim around four red tear stones from defeated enemies to boost your health meter. Red tear stones are only dropped once per screen, so once you claim one from a particular screen, you won't get another one. Move on to a different screen to find more, although you won't be able to find one in every screen. This is also a good way to boost your bread and money amounts. Remember that only one enemy drop can occupy the screen at a time, so be sure to collect the old ones or no new ones will appear.

Defeat the Hippogryph[edit]

The Hippogryph is your first boss target in the game. It can be found by travelling east along the south boarder of the area, and the north along the east boarder to the top, and then one screen east (labelled 1 on the map). The Hippogryph may seem like a difficult bounce, alternating between running and bouncing around, but you can actually take advantage of the terrain and defeat it quite easily. Park yourself in the upper left hand corner of the screen (along the north-most boarder) and face south. Stab continuously as it approaches. You may get hit a few times if it attacks you from the right, but it will have an extremely difficult time hitting you from the left because the trees will get in its way. You will have the chance to stab it enough times in order to defeat it before it can attack you from another direction. It will leave behind one Pandora Key and one blue tear stone. There are two hidden entrances along the north region, but both of the men inside simply offer words of encouragement.

Rescue Popo[edit]

Before you leave the area, you'll need to find and locate Popo. It's not hard to find Popo. Simply follow the river that connects the big lake up to the little lake, and then head west (labelled 2 on the map). You will find Popo locked away in a cell inside of a tree trunk. If you have a Pandora Key, you will be able to walk right up through the bars (they won't disappear) and collect Popo. Popo will hang around you just as if you had summoned it, which means you will recover lost health faster, and Popo will absorb the effect of some enemy projectile attacks.

Proceed to Area 2[edit]

Once you've beaten the Hippogryph and rescued Popo, you are ready to enter Area 2. It is a good idea to get your money over 50, and your bread count over 300 before you leave (100 and 500 respectively are even better). To reach Area 2, return to the tree where you began, and head west. Then proceed north as far as you can, and double back along one of the right paths. Head east and then north again, and finally all the way to the west (labelled 3 on the map). You will find the arch that leads to the next area. When you are ready, step through.
