Battles are turn-based and are initiated by running into an enemy or during scripted events. If you run into the back of the enemy, then you will start the battle with a preemptive attack. You will have more turns in the beginning than the enemy. If the enemy does the same, then they will start with a surprise attack. The party will start in the center with the enemies surrounding them.
The battle takes place on a 17 × 17 grid. The Battle Order Bar displays the turn order from top to bottom and is on the left side of the screen. The order is determined by the SPD parameter. The status of the party members is displayed on the bottom of the screen. You can press
or to rotate the camera. By holding in the PC version, you can speed up the battle.Once all enemies are defeated, the results screen will display showing EXP, sepith, and any items earned. K.O. party members do not receive EXP. If all party members are defeated, then the result is a game over. You can retry or return to the title screen.
Tactics[edit]
Before engaging in battles, you can adjust the formation and set the S-Break for each party member in the Tactics tab of the Camp menu. The formation is the initial location of each party member on a 7 × 5 grid when a battle starts.
Commands[edit]
During each party member's turn you can choose from the following commands.
- Attack
- Move and attack an enemy, moves closer to the enemy if out of range
- Move
- Move to an empty square
- Art
- Cast arts, requires one turn to cast and consumes EP
- Craft
- Perform craft or S-craft, consumes CP
- Item
- Use item
- Run
- Flee battle, may not be available for some battles, monster will still wander in the field
Party members can also perform an S-Break when they have at least 100 CP. A red orb is displayed next to the character portrait when it is available. The S-Break will insert the character into the next turn and perform a strong craft that will consume all CP. The more CP the character has, the more damage the S-Break does.
