Titanfall 2 has two modes of play: multiplayer, which has various modes of its own played online with others, and the campaign, which is played solo. This section of the guide will cover the campaign, which follows a linear story line split into nine missions. Some of the missions are further split into chapters, depending on their size and variety of objectives. It is recommended that the campaign be played before multiplayer in order to become accustomed to the basic gameplay mechanics.

The story sees the player take the role of rookie soldier Jack Cooper, amidst training provided by the battle-hardened Captain Tai Lastimosa. The game's difficulty can be changed at any time via the main menu, varying between four choices:

  • Easy is recommended for beginners of the FPS genre or when picking up certain achievements/trophies via Mission Select, if they were not picked up already (such as Cowboy Up, which requires the player to rodeo an enemy Titan while engaging in battle). Cooper can sustain heavy damage before falling.
  • Regular is recommended for an initial playthrough for players with some shooter experience who are not looking for a heavy challenge. Cooper can sustain a decent amount of damage, but strategy is still required to survive some of the game's trickier battles.
  • Hard is recommended for players who have experience with the genre and are seeking a challenge. If you do not fear difficulty, you may want to skip ahead to the Master difficulty, as the game's difficulty achievements/trophies stack.
  • Master ensures a difficult experience throughout the game, and is recommended particularly for subsequent playthroughs rather than the initial; knowing what to expect may save some time in planning out strategies.

It is recommended that you select a difficulty after completing The Pilot's Gauntlet, as this is essentially a pre-test of your abilities. A grasp of the game's action elements, such as wallrunning, double jumping, and sliding, is equally as important as its shooter elements. Take note as well that while Titan battles are fundamentally similar to pilot firefights (in that they can shoot, use a defensive ability, and dodge attacks), they also differ vastly, especially when fighting against other Titans. If playing on a higher difficulty, make sure to use the checkpoints scattered throughout the levels to your advantage.
