Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire/Breeding

It has been suggested that this page be merged into Pokémon/Breeding.

You may discuss this on the page's talk page.

To start, you need a female and male Pokémon that are in the same egg group (see Breeding Groups). Then travel to the Pokémon Daycare on Route 117. Go inside and talk to the lady at the counter. Give her the selected Pokémon. To check if they are compatible, talk to the man outside. He will respond to one of the following things that will cause you to have an egg or not:

  • They seem to get along well: 70%
  • They seem to get along: 50%
  • They don't seem to like each other: 20%
  • They prefer to play with other Pokémon: 0%

After this is said, start walking, and after a certain number of steps, if the conditions are right, an egg will be produced. Regardless of the percentage, if they have a base chance higher than 0%, enough steps will get you an egg. The resulting Pokémon should be in the form of the lowest evolution of the female, but there are some exceptions to this:

  • A Nidoran female's egg could result in a Nidoran male or a Nidoran female.
  • An Illumise's egg could be an Illumise or a Volbeat.
  • A Azumarill or Marill egg will usually be a Marill.
  • A Wobbuffet's egg will usually be a Wobufett.

The easiest way to get another of the same Pokémon, male or female, is to use the Ditto Method. Since Ditto can breed with any Pokémon (besides the No Eggs Group), it makes it easier to get a Tauros or Magnemite or Chansey. Other ways to breed are by using Pokémon from the same egg group, using the same species of Pokémon, or by breeding with a Pokémon from the same evolutionary family.

[edit] Item effects on eggs

When breeding a female Wobbuffet or Azumarill (or Marill) they will end up the same Pokémon normally. But a Wobbuffet with a Lax Incense will create a Wynaut. And a Azumarill or Marill with a Sea Incense will create a Azurill. So items can have an effect on the Pokémon in the egg. Some Pokémon change their Inheritance such as a Pikachu holding a Light Ball will get a Pichu that knows Volt Tackle. Sometimes they have effects on natures, for example a Ditto and a Parent holding an Everstone has a 50% chance of getting the same nature as the Parent. For other items and their effects see the item sections.

[edit] Baby Pokémon

Baby Pokémon were introduced in second generation games as pre-evolutions to existing Pokémon only available by breeding. These baby Pokémon are listed below:

  • Togepi
  • Cleffa
  • Igglybuff
  • Elekid
  • Magby
  • Azurill
  • Wynaut
  • Smoochum
  • Pichu

[edit] Hatching

After you get the egg from the Daycare Man you need to hatch the egg. Hop on your bike and go on a long ride somewhere, as the time an egg takes to hatch depends on the number of steps you take, so keep on doing this until the egg hatches. If you really want, you can go back and forth between areas to hatch your egg. Every Pokémon takes a different amount of steps to hatch. Here are a few of the amounts:

# of Steps Pokémon
1,280 Magikarp

You may notice by looking at the eggs status in your party that the Trainer Memo sometimes changes depending on how many steps you've taken – this comes in handy quite a lot. The type, OT, and IDNo are all ???, but using this Breeding Guide you should be able to find out its moves and the Pokémon it will be.

[edit] Inheritance

Depending on the moves that the parents know and the species as a whole, the newly hatched baby has a chance to know those moves.

  • If the Pokémon species knows any moves level 5 or lower, it will know them when hatched.
  • If a male knows a TM or HM, and the baby is capable of learning that TM or HM, the baby will learn the move at birth.
  • If both parents know a move by level-up, the baby will learn that move at birth.
  • If the father knows an egg move that the baby can learn, it will know it.

Natures, DVs (or IVs), and stats are also inherited but are not properly.

[edit] Egg Moves

Egg moves are moves a Pokémon hatched from egg has. Basic egg moves are moves that were inherited from the male parent that the baby can learn. An example is shown below:

  • Charizard (female) + Dragonite (male) = Charmander

This seems normal at first, but the Charmander knows Outrage – an attack it seemingly cannot know. This means the father knew Outrage too, and being in the same Egg Group as Charizard allowed it to produce an egg of a Charmander – one knowing Outrage. Beldum is, as of now, one of the only Pokémon that recieves no egg moves, as it only knows Take Down. To find out how to get certain egg moves see the next section on breeding chains, or consult the Pokédex.

[edit] Breeding Chains

Breeding Chains are usually very simple – if you breed a female Charizard with a male Dragonite with Outrage, the resulting Charmander will also know Outrage. This breeding chain, when you breed one or more times to get a Pokémon, allos you to know that a certain egg move will be inherited. However, some breeding chains are quite long – for example, trying to get a Lileep with Earthquake. If you have a male Relicanth that you happened to teach Earthquake and a female Corsola, breed them to (hopefully) get a male Corsola knowing Earthquake. Then breed that Corsola with a Cradily/Lileep to get a Lileep that knows Earthquake. The hardest Pokémon to use a breeding chain with is Smeargle – for professionals only.
