Route 101 is the first route you will see, home to some of the new generation Pokémon that you can encounter in the game.

This is where you have you first wild battle in the game, with a Poochyena (lvl. 2), or a Zigzagoon (lvl. 2) for Emerald players. Professor Birch is being chased by it, and you have to get a Pokémon from his bag to fight it. Choose well, because, this will be your partner and your strongest Pokémon for the rest of the storyline, and you can't get the other two unless you trade with a friend who has them.

#263 Zigzagoon
This Pokémon is pretty common throughout the land of Hoenn, so finding one shouldn't be a problem (except Emerald trainers, who have hordes of Poochyena to deal with). Once you get Poké Balls you should try to snag this raccoon-like critter. Its main strength in the game is not within battle, but off battle. Its party to the ability Pickup, which gives you a small chance to get free items after a battle. Emerald Players get the added Bonus of a more developed Pickup system, allowing them to get better items the higher its level. Definitely worth adding to your team.

Poochyena aren't as common in Ruby and Sapphire as they are in Emerald, but are worth picking up. Their specialty is being a Dark type, a relatively rare variety of Pokémon, which gives them immunity against Ghost and Psychic Moves. It Learns Howl at Level 5, which ups your attack when you use it, allowing you to defeat opponents faster. It evolves into the more Powerful Mightyena at Level 18.	This Little guy is the main variety of bug in the Hoenn region, at first they're nothing too special, but when they reach Level 7, something special happens. This little bug can evolve into either a Silicoon or a Cascoon! But you'll probably want to catch its other form rather than just another Wurmple, since what they evolve into is random and determined when you catch it. Seems this bug is more special than it looks...
