At the beginning of the game, like all games, shows an introduction screen, and like in all games, there is a Pokémon Professor introducing you to the Pokémon world, this time its Professor Birch. As in Pokémon Crystal you get to choose whether you want to be a boy or a girl. After choosing your gender you can choose your name. In Ruby and Sapphire you can choose from four names or write your own, but in Emerald there are no pre-made names.
Once you have done this you find yourself in a moving truck headed for your new home in Littleroot Town.
