Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic
*Spin Attack: Press down while in motion to have Sonic curl up into a ball and roll across the ground.
Sonic is the world's fastest supersonic hedgehog and the lead character of the game. Unlike Knuckles and Tails, Sonic is mostly ground-bound. For this reason, he's considered the most average and well-rounded character of the game. Ideal as a starter character, but you may want to try out Tails or Knuckles if you're looking for less of a challenge.
*Spin Charge: Crouch and rapidly press A to have Sonic rev up while spinning. Release down to roll off in a high speed Spin Dash.
{| prettytable
*Double Spin Attack (Jump Attack): Sonic creates a shield around him by spinning rapidly. For the split-second the shield lasts, the radius of Sonic's spin is increased and he is granted invincibility. From Sonic 3.
|-
*Skid Attack (Special Attack): By pressing b 3 times, Sonic will somersault and slide along the ground. Good for breaking through walls or attacking enemies beside you. From Sonic Adventure 2.
! Image
*Backwards Jump: If you jump after pressing B twice, Sonic will jump backwards. This is useful if you want to avoid akward falls or being hit by hazardous items (such as spikes). From Sonic Adventure 2.
! Name
*Jump Dash: Pressing left or right twice rapidly after jumping will cause Sonic to dash in mid-air. The distance is affected by how fast you are moving when the move is executed. From Sonic Adventure.

Miles "Tails" Prower
Miles "Tails" Prower
*Spin Attack: Press down while in motion to have "Tails" curl up into a ball and roll across the ground.
Sonic's best friend, Tails is a young fox who enjoys building machines in his free time. His special mutation of two tails allows him to use them as propellers, granting him the ability to fly. With Tails' flight, maneuvering around the zones of Sonic Advance shouldn't be much trouble. If you're looking for more of a challenge, try out Sonic or Amy.
*Spin Charge: Crouch and rapidly press A to have "Tails" rev up while spinning. Release down to roll off in a high speed Spin Dash.
{| prettytable
*Propeller Flight (Jump Attack): Whilst in the air, rapidly press A to have "Tails" soar through the air using his namesake twin tails. If you'd prefer "Tails" not to gain extra height, just press A once in the air. "Tails" can fly for approximately 10 seconds before gently falling to the ground. "Tails" can also attack enemies if he hits them with his tails.
|-
*Dog Paddle Swimming: When underwater, rapidly press A while jumping to have "Tails" swim. Works similar to flying, but you can't attack enemies.
! Image
*Tail Attack (Special Attack): "Tails" spins his tails around to attack nearby enemies. From Sonic Adventure.

Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles is an ally of Sonic and Tails, and has been since he realized he was tricked by Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Guardian of Angel Island's Master Emerald, Knuckles is a natural hothead and will do anything to protect it. His spiked knuckles allow him to deal extra damage to foes and climb on walls, and his echidna locks give him the ability to glide through the air. He along with Tails is one of the easier playable characters in the game.

Amy Rose
Amy is a young hedgehog who has an infatuation with Sonic. Ever since he rescued her from Eggman in Sonic CD, she's taken to following him on his adventures and unsuccessfully proposing marriage. Unlike the other three playable characters, Amy doesn't have the ability to roll into a ball. The spin attack and spin dash are off-limits for her; she instead uses her hammer to attack. Amy is considered the most challenging character to play as in Sonic Advance, so choose to play as her if you want a difficult playthrough.
