It is part of the Pokémon series, and was first released in North America on July 27, 1999. It was originally planned to be a Nintendo 64DD game, but due to multiple delays in releasing the Nintendo 64DD, Pokémon Snap ended up being released several months earlier on the Nintendo 64.

The game was released onto the Wii Virtual Console in December 2007 and the Wii U Virtual Console in 2016
