Special Classes, also called "Story Characters" or "Named Characters", are made up of unique, one-of-a-kind characters obtained through the storyline or through secret events. These classes cannot be renamed or deleted, and include both humanoid and monster-type characters. With the exception of Adell and Rozalin, all of these classes will be lost after beginning a new cycle, but can regained again in the current cycle. After lost characters are regained, they will have the same stats and equipment as when you last saw them.
All special classes only have one tier. Most fall along the lines of a tier 4 or tier 5 generic class by aptitude, but are closer to tier 3 for base stats. Because of this, all of these classes (with the notable exceptions of Adell and Laharl) will fall well behind the more advanced unlockable classes later in the game. There is, however, one distinct advantage to the Special Classes: they have by far the cheapest re-incarnation cost. All special classes can be re-incarnated as Genius for 5000 Mana, making it possible to re-incarnate them far more frequently than any other class in the game. Frequent reincarnation is somewhat of an artform of its own, but if done well these classes can achieve competitive base stats with a comparatively low amount of applied effort.

Adell is the main character, and thus, has some of the best stats of the story characters. His proficiency with Fists is also useful, since this aids his ability to evade enemies. His special ability, which increase his strength when fighting higher level enemies is useful in both the main story and the post-game. He is mainly proficient with Fists, but can also use Swords and/or Spears if forced to. New players should keep giving him Fists to make him more useful. His Specials all make use of the Fire Element, so keep this in mind when facing enemies. Adell will most likely always be the head of your fighting force, either as your main attacker, or trump card.

Rozalin is a rather weak Main character in terms of basic statistics, since some generic classes have better aptitudes than she will. However, a leveled-up Rozalin can provide ranged support through her great use of Guns, her specials also being the only ones in the game that require the use of the HIT stat. Her Magic and Staff Aptitudes are also decent, making a potentially good Mage-type character as well. However, without supervision, she may fall short of your post-game Party's power. Whether you choose to level her up or not, her innate ability to power up all Males Units within one Panel of her will always be useful, especially since it works for all males, human and monster. That includes somewhat ambiguous characters such as Prinnies and Winged, and pretty much every other monster that isn't a Succubus, Felynn, or Flora Beast. New Players should stick to relying on her Gun-toting skills while giving her some special attention, while experienced players may decide to give her some Magic spells and a Staff, since the attack range of Magic spells and Staff Weapon Mastery is much less finicky than a Gun's, having much better range of attack as well.

Red Side: When you first get him early in the game, Tink has the potential to be by far your strongest attacker, but it requires using a Beastmaster and Rozalin (Rozalin gives Red Tink both her male boost and his female boost, and the Beastmaster's Wild Groom special in conjunction with Tink's low exp rate grants him levels at a super-accelerated rate). While this works well for most story stages, the downside is that his red side isn't very useful in the Item World or Dark World since you usually won't have an opportunity to waste a turn turning him red.
Blue Side: His blue side easily has the highest movement in the game, and can be increased even more with Lovers. Because of that and the fact that he can pass through enemies and Geo Symbols, he can be great at charging towards gates in the Item World... although you won't need to keep his level up to do it.

Fighting monsters? Send Hanako to the front lines. Her stat boosts don't increase more than a Cleric's spells, and the set combinations of two different stats isn't that helpful, nor is the limited range. Pretty Bazooka is definitely a solid attack, but since she doesn't have any attacks striking multiple panels, it can be harder to level her.
Her stats lag behind the generic classes more than usual, so that's the last thing you'll want her for. The ability helps keep her in your party for a while, but her HP and DEF are so low, a tier 6 Heavy Knight can match her against monsters, let alone against humans.

Taro's all about defense, and he'll be your best defender early in the game. He'll be severely outranked by the time you can afford a tier 6 Heavy Knight, though, especially considering H-Knights can equip DEF-boosting spears.

Although Yukimaru's innate ability (Amnesia-tainted attacks that count as "Holy Strikes" when used) is rather weak, this makes her great against Mages and Healers, since she can prevent them from casting spells. As far as her stats go, Tier 5 and 6 characters outrank her. However, she has decent mastery with multiple weapons, which makes her quite versatile. She can use Sword-skills to attack multiple opponents with pure power, equip a Spear to take advantage of its defensive abilities, or equip a Bow for long-range attacks. Her SPD is also high, helping her evade attacks. Note that her Specials use the Ice element, which can make or break an attack. If you intend on using Yukimaru for the post-game, give her a weapon that fits your playing style and capitalize on it.

Similar to Yukimaru, Etna has potential in a few areas, although she's great with Spears and Axes in particular. She is an ATK-based character, so Staves are not an option. Even though she's good with Guns as well, her HIT is too low to utilize on those types of weapons. Just like Yuikimaru, choose how you want her to fight, and stick with it. Her special ability, which strengthens Prinnies by 50%, is a great asset to any Player who likes to use the little guys. However, Prinnies are weaker than most classes, and this ability does not help you in the Post-Game. Also, the only Special that Etna has in her repertoire that is of any use is Chaos Impact. The other two are too weak to be properly utilized in the Post-Game. Treat Etna just like you would a created unit and remember her decent Weapon Mastery with most weapons.
