Skills are divided in a few categories. There are skills related to rice cultivation, fighting skills and raiment skills.
Farming Skills
Farming skills are acquired simply by cultivating rice. You unlock skills related to the current task you're doing. These skills do not consume SP and merely grant more information related to cultivating rice, or give passive bonuses like doing tasks faster and easier.
Tilling

Fighting skills can be upgraded by using them relentingly on enemies. They are unlocked by cultivating rice. Using these skills consume SP.
