Rocking a completely exclusive Fire/Water type, Volcanion is a Pokemon that excels at both power and bulk. It has incredible attacking stats and a wide movepool, which includes the unique move Steam Eruption, a Water move with the power of Hydro Pump with improved accuracy and high burn chance. Volcanion's oxymoronic typing is one of its greatest traits, giving it five resistances, three of which are quadruple resistances, and gives it good type coverage with just its STAB moves. It also has a respectable Defense stat, and even gets Water Absorb to give it an additional type immunity. Volcanion's main flaw is its poor Speed, so it really needs to be able to sponge enemy hits before retaliating. While it has a strong typing, Volcanion is still vulnerable to common attacks like Ground, Rock and Electric moves. | |||
Steam Eruption is Volcanion's signature move and its strongest STAB attack. This move shares the same base power as Hydro Pump but is much more reliable due to its accuracy, but more importantly it has Scald's 30% burn chance, so even Pokemon that can survive the blast will be left with a lingering affliction. It does have low PP, so more bulky sets usually prefer to use Scald as Volcanion's Water move instead, since it is much more spammable and effective at spreading burns. Flamethrower, Fire Blast and Overheat are the standard Fire STAB moves in ascending order of power, but the stronger the move, the higher the tradeoff. Earth Power is a nice coverage move that smashes enemy Ground and Electric-types. Sludge Bomb lets Volcanion combat Fairies more effectively, and Superpower is a powerful physical move that can trip up dedicated special walls. | |||
