Katamari Damacy has you controlling the Prince of the Universe. Your father has destroyed all the stars in the sky and you have to get things back to normal by rolling gigantic balls to replace them. You start off with a ball of a certain size, and there is a target size that must be reached in a time limit. Special levels have different objectives, like collecting a number of a certain object or collecting the largest of a certain object.

Menu System

The menus in this game could be a little confusing to the newcomer. The main menu consists of 3 planets: Home planet, Earth, and Space Mushroom.

Home Planet

  • Data - A house. Save your game or load another game here.
  • Collection - A tree. View objects that you've collected by size or location or type.
  • View Constellations - A flashing star. View the stars, constellations, and comets you've made.
  • Presents - A present. View the royal presents you've collected and outfit the Prince.
  • Sound - A phonograph. Adjust the sound settings.
  • Vibration - A woodpecker. Adjust the vibration settings.

Earth

This is the level select screen. A green star indicates that the level has been completed. A ball with light and dark green indicates a level that hasn't been completed. A level with a box with pictures on it indicates a completed constellation. A level with a grey box that says Eternal #x indicates that you have unlocked eternal mode for that level.

Space Mushroom

This is the multiplayer screen. You choose two of the Prince's cousins to go head to head. You must have two controllers to play this mode.

Guide

If there's no save files, you will be prompted to start a save file on your memory card, after which you will be taken directly to the tutorial.

If there is a save file, you will be presented with 3 save slots and a new game option. To choose one of the options, roll your ball forward like in the game.

Tutorial

You are thrown in a circular area with nothing in it. To pass this part, just follow the instructions on the sides. You are then given another set of commands to complete. After completion of this segment, you are taken to your first level.

  • Level: House
  • Starting size: 5cm0mm
  • Target size: 10cm0mm
  • Time: Unlimited
  • Comet Time: Unknown (N/A?)

This is the beginner's level. Get a feel for the game, enjoy yourself, and learn how to play Katamari Damacy. You are confined to the dining room (possibly a bedroom) in this level. You start off on the table. It is actually possible to get to 10cm without leaving the table, but you gain more understanding of the game if you roll around on the floor as well. It's important to gain a feel of what you can and can't pick up because it's the key to making the largest katamaris possible.

After completion of this level you are given another short tutorial consisting of 4 animations warning you of what you can and can't do with your katamari. After this you are given the option to view the tutorial again.

You are then taken to the menu system of Katamari Damacy.

Make a Star

Make a Star 1

  • Level: House
  • Starting size: 5cm0mm
  • Target size: 10cm0mm
  • Time: 3 minutes
  • Comet Time: 1 minute

This is the same level as the tutorial. When you go to Earth for the first time, you will notice that Make a Star 1 has a completed icon while Make a Star 2 has an uncompleted icon. This is due to the fact that you beat the level already in the tutorial. It isn't necessary to beat it again unless you want the comet for this level. The completion strategy is the same as for the tutorial level, but it is very difficult to get 10cm in 1 minute without leaving the table.

Roll forward and get the stamps. Do a quick turn and pick up some tacks on your way to the caramels. Roll enough stuff to get to 7cm, then pick up the orange pieces on the corner of the table. Go down to the corner where there's a stack of cookies, and then pick up all the eye drop bottles. This should have you at about 9cm8mm or so. To finish up, just roll up some cookies on the floor.

Make a Star 2

  • Level: House
  • Starting size: 5cm0mm
  • Target size: 20cm0mm
  • Time: 6 minutes
  • Comet Time: Achieved in 2:51, probably 3 minutes. (R1)
  • Royal Present: Winter Scarf

You start out in the same room. Eventually you will have access to a closet and the backyard. Start off by getting up to 7cm by picking up pachinko balls. Once up to 7cm, find the orange pieces to get up to about 10cm. Once at 10cm, go to the corner with all the blocks and frogs and pick them all up. Roll into the backyard, go left and follow the path around the garden. Pick up the knives and socks. This should put you pretty close to your goal. To get to 20cm, roll up some magnets and toy guns. Using this method, a time of under 2 minutes is possible.

The royal present is being carried around, appropriately enough, by Santa. Once in the backyard, you should notice Santa flying around carried by reindeer made out of chicken and magnets. The present is on his sled.

Completion of this level unlocks Make a Star 3 and Make Cancer.

Make a Star 3

  • Level: Town
  • Starting size: 10cm0mm
  • Target size: 50cm0mm
  • Time: 8 minutes
  • Comet Time: Achieved in 3:09, probably 4 minutes.
  • Royal Present: ?

To start off with, grab enough to pick up flowers. The flowers are small, but they actually give you the greatest gain. You should be around 18cm or so. Grab all the salmon cans at the exit of the starting area. all the flowers in the area that you begin in.

Completion of this level unlocks Make a Star 4.

Make a Star 4

  • Level: House
  • Starting size: 5cm0mm
  • Target size: 1m0cm0mm
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Comet Time: Achieved in 6:12, probably 7 minutes.
  • Royal Present: ?

Completion of this level unlocks Make a Star 5 and Make Cygnus.
