Pullum Purna was the daughter of a wealthy and powerful magistrate in an Arabian country. She lived a happy but sheltered childhood. The aspect of Pullum's formal education that she enjoyed most was her martial arts training which she combined with her aspects of her dancing training.

When she came of age, she was desired by many men for her captivating beauty. Anxious to talk with many of them about her enjoyment of fighting, she was surprised and dismayed by the reaction shared by every man she spoke with. Not one man took her fighting ability seriously, and some even laughed at her enthusiasm. Angered by such brazen disrespect, she became determined to prove to the world that women are just as capable fighters, if not more capable than men.

When she heard about a Street Fighter tournament taking place in the world, she became insistent that she be allowed to enter. Her father, the magistrate, began to fret and worry, not necessarily about Pullum's ability to win, but over what the locals would say about his family. Pullum knew how to bend her father's will to her desires, and he eventually gave in. But he refused to allow her to travel without a hired bodyguard. The magistrate put the word out that the family was seeking the aid of a powerful bodyguard, but would not say why.

An overwhelming number of men volunteered for the position, just for the chance of seeing Pullum, but none were well suited for the position. When a broke wrestler from India arrived, simply for the opportunity to earn fare for a trip home, he was hired on the spot. Darun took the job begrudgingly until he saw Pullum for the first time. Darun was no longer consumed with thoughts of finding Zangief or returning home.

Pullum was annoyed with the insistance of her father that she travel with a bodyguard, but Darun was tolerable. They traveled to the tournament and signed up while Darun kept everyone at arm's length from Pullum. He did so, that is, until he discovered that Zangief was a contestant. Confident that he could both fulfill his duties as a bodyguard and compete in the tournament, he signed up, much to Pullum's relief because it meant that she would be able to interact freely with the other fighters while Darun was competing.

Pullum had a positive experience, unlike another fighter Blair who she had befriended and was sorry to see leave. She anxiously awaited the second tournament, and was extremely annoyed by a mix up with Darun's luggage that caused them to arrive to the tournament late. When the third tournament was held, she had hoped Darun would be her partner and had even prepared a combination move with him, and Darun initially agreed, but he was delighted with the opportunity to partner with Zangief, so she had to find someone else.
