Before you can begin mapping the various landmarks on an island, you'll need to find its map. On Hometown Prairie, it is given to you by the Town Map-Seller. On all other islands, you'll have to find the Look-What-I-Found Kid. He can usually be found on the same screen as the landing spot and otherwise at least very nearby. Sometimes he is hiding or in disguise, making it a bit of a challenge to find him. Once you've found him, you'll have to buy the map from him for the price he's asking. There is no haggling involved in these trades. Once you have the map, you can begin searching for landmarks to draw on it. A landmark can be located on land or in the water. Sometimes it is somewhat hidden, like Fish Head, and a minor task has to be fulfilled first before it becomes visible. Other times, you might not realize something is a landmark. The best things to keep in mind when searching for them yourself:

  1. If it is an object or structure not on the map, it's very likely a landmark.
  2. Check the other landmarks you've already found. Chances are best that the missing landmarks are in an area where you haven't found landmarks yet.

Once you've completed a map, the Town Map-Seller will buy it back from you. If you want the map back, you'll in turn have to buy it from her. Completing the entire map sidequest will earn you the Master Pen

Two notes:

  1. The maps are divided in squares. These squares will be named according to the chessboard system. This means that A1 is the lower left corner, B1 the square next to it and A2 the square above it.
  2. Almost every landmark either gives rupees or items once (orbs and Tingly Statue give rupees multiple times). To get it, you have to stand close to it and touch it with the stylus. Floor structures need to be touched at the center, or at the most important spot.
