The battle system in Final Fantasy XIII is a new one, but not that much of a departure unless the last game by Square Enix you played was Kingdom Hearts or The World Ends With You. If you're having trouble with what's what in battle, read on. If you're not, skip this.

There's a Paradigm system in Final Fantasy XIII that can only be used when your characters have already turned l'Cie.

English Japanese Color Description Occasion
Commando (COM) Attacker (ATK) Build attack chains more easily with enhanced strength. Weakening the enemy
Ravager (RAV) Blaster (BLA) Charge enemy chain gauges with concentrated attacks. Getting the stagger bar up
Sentinel (SEN) Defender (DEF) Shield allies from enemy attacks with enhanced defense. Good for making another target while attacking the enemy
Synergist (SYN) Enhancer (ENH) Support allies with an array of magical enhancements. Give your party a boost
Medic (MED) Healer (HLR) Focus on restoring HP and removing status ailments. Low health or a life-threatening upcoming attack
Saboteur (SAB) Jammer (JAM) Enfeeble enemies while charging their chain gauges. Buff up the party and weaken the enemy
