Shin Megami Tensei is a spin-off of the Megami Tensei (or MegaTen) series. The series encompasses a number of different media, and originated as a series of novels (Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani). To date, the publisher of these titles in Japan and the US has been Atlus (and Atlus USA), except for the Famicom MegaTen games published by Namco.

Shin Megami Tensei itself has a number of spin-off series, including Persona, Digital Devil Saga, and Devil Summoner.

Story[edit]

Storylines vary between the titles (and especially between spin-offs), but the general thread that runs between the games in the series is that the games take place in a modern-day setting, often in a Japanese city such as Tokyo. The main character (usually named by the player in the main series, but occasionally given a name in the spin-offs) will have the ability to summon demons or influence them to join in battles. There is often an element of being able to resolve battles without fighting, usually through negotiation with the opposing demons.
