Once one of your beasts reach level 15, you will have the option to combine them with one of the kalma you purified in the forest. Merging costs a small fee depending on the level of the kalma and will grant your beast the attack that the kalma possessed, give them an ability, and have your beast start over at level 1 while retaining most of its stats. As all beasts have a maximum level of 20, this is necessary to allow your beasts to continue to grow stronger and allows them to access their more advanced evolutions. In order to merge, you must visit the Room of Life in the temple and speak to Ra, the female NPC in charge.
