CQC is the robust melee system of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. All CQC moves can be performed by Snake or any MSF soldier in the Combat Unit deployed to a mission. The use of CQC requires being equipped with a CQC-compatible weapon. Pressing R1 button without a CQC-compatible weapon will simply execute a slow, but powerful melee attack that will likely leave you vulnerable to the enemy for the animation's duration; CQC should only be attempted when equipped with a CQC-compatible weapon.

All CQC moves are non-lethal and they tend to knock the target prone. If the target isn't knocked-out, they will come to their feet after about one second, so follow through with a hold-up or immediately press R1 button when the icon appears.

CQC range is indicated by the CQC icon appearing on the screen.

Throw[edit]

While tilting Neutral lstick near an enemy soldier, press and hold R1 button when the icon appears.

  • Hold R1 button. Tapping the button will only roll (PSP) or punch (HD editions). While this will briefly disorient the enemy and damage his Psyche, he'll quickly recover and force an Alert Phase.
  • Most enemies will not be knocked out by one throw except by MSF soldiers highly skilled in CQC. Aiming your weapon at an enemy Thrown to the ground will neutralize them.
  • When surrounded by other enemy soldiers, Throwing an enemy with this maneuver will initiate Consecutive CQC.

Restrain[edit]

While standing near an enemy soldier, press and hold R1 button.

  • Neutral lstick must be neutral for the Restrain maneuver to proc, otherwise you'll execute a regular Throw.
  • After about one second, the restrained enemy will begin taking Psyche damage until they pass out.
  • Mash R1 button to choke the restrained enemy faster.
  • Releasing R1 button will release the enemy soldier. If they have Psyche left, they'll recover and attack.

Restrain, Throw[edit]

While Restraining an enemy soldier, tilt Analog Stick to throw the Restrained enemy in the desired direction.

  • Enemies can be thrown at the ground, at walls for double Psyche damage (and an almost-certain knockout).
  • Enemies can be thrown at other enemies, damaging all of them and knocking them to the ground.
  • When surrounded by other enemy soldiers, Throwing an enemy with this maneuver will initiate Consecutive CQC.

Restrain, Interrogate[edit]

While Restraining an enemy soldier, press and hold Up dpad to threaten them with your Stun Sod in exchange for intel.

  • Each enemy has a set sequence of responses to interrogation.
  • Release and hold Up dpad again to hear the next response in your held enemy's sequence.
  • The enemy will repeat the final response ad infinitum.
  • Interrogation can reveal the locations of items, documents, and POWs on the local area map.
  • Interrogation can also reveal general hints about the game, and even fun Easter Eggs!

Consecutive CQC[edit]

When surrounded by multiple enemy soldiers, while each of them are in CQC range, and while executing a Throw, press R1 button when the icon appears.

  • Mashing R1 button during the Consecutive CQC sequence is also effective.
  • Consecutive CQC knocks out all enemies caught in the CQC sequence. Enemies attacked later during the CQC sequence will be knocked out for a longer duration.
  • Performing Consecutive CQC on 6 opponents will unlock a Trophy (PS3) or Achievement (XBOX 360).
