Day Three: Trial Mode

Before the Trial

Valant appears and warns Apollo that his big illusion will help you with the case. He isn't a witness, so he will be leaving town. Bailiff announces that today's trial will be postponed for half-an-hour. Apparently, The Judge is visiting the hospital as, the Chief of Justice's son's condition has worsened. Bailiff gives you the Newspaper Article, which is added to the Court Record. It says something about "Incuritis". Now, where did you hear that before?

Trial finally begins. The Judge has visited The Chief Justice, as he is going through a difficult time.

So without further ado, let's begin. You are left with two mysteries yesterday. One is that LeTouse was an agent, and the second is that Lamiroir pointed her finger at Daryan as the killer. Klavier says that Daryan has a solid alibi. As the murder occurred, Daryan was rocking it out on stage, so he couldn't have been backstage during the crime. This prompts The Judge to clear Daryan's suspicions and call a verdict to Machi!

You can't let that happen, don't you remember about yesterday? Machi was about to say something about the murder, until Daryan cut you off. You decide to hold the verdict and call up Machi. You need an interpreter, and Klavier doesn't know much about Borginian, so you decide to call up Lamiroir as Machi's translator. Let's hope she doesn't say anything just to protect Machi. Seeing now good reason for refusal, The Judge accepts your request.

Machi will say that, much to even Lamiroir's surprise, has proof of his own innocence! This sounds like vital evidence, probably what he is trying to say yesterday! Machi will testify for his proof.

Machi's Testimony: Proof of Innocence (Translated by Lamiroir)

Machi's
Machi's
Machi's' Testimony
- Proof of Innocence -
  1. He says that word of Mr. LeTouse's death came as a great shock.
  2. But if the killing truly followed the lyrics of my song...
  3. ...I, that is, he, could not have done it.
  4. He says that because the lyrics are in English, he does not understand them.

Of course, Machi doesn't understand English. Klavier, however, asks that if Lamiroir ever told Machi what the lyrics mean. Lamiroir says she has, but not in great detail. Could she be really protecting Machi? It looks like your bracelet will do the job.

Proof of Innocence: Cross-Examination

Use your bracelet in the 4th statement:

  • He says that because the lyrics are in English, he does not understand them.

Perceive Machi's eyes. It looks like he is glancing at Lamiroir as soon as she said "English". Does that means Machi does understand Emglish? Lamiroir says that Machi can only say the word "English" and nothing else. So how did he know about the lyrics? Machi says that he read the The Borginian Daily Bugle. You know that's not true, Present the Borginian Newspaper it does say something about the case, but it has no mention of the lyrics at all. Machi then remembers that he was mistaken. He nowws says that it was Lamiroir that told him about the lyrics! This doesn't look like the type to continue, but you fell your bracelet reacting. You request to add a new statement.

  • It was I who explained that the crime followed the song.

Use your bracelet on that statement:

  • It was I who explained that the crime followed the song.

Perceive Lamiroir's neck. She is swallowing again. How could she not so sure that she told him? Perhaps she could be protecting someone? When asked who, Present Machi Tobaye's Profile. It looks like Lamiroir is lying to protect him. You ask once more to Machi that if he can understand English.

At this point, Machi screams, in English! Machi will finally admit by himself that he can indeed speak English! But only a little bit, as he obviously shows. This is shocking news, even to Lamiroir. Machi will say that he is hiding one last thing, he says he didn't shoot LeTouse. He was at the dressing room, though LeTouse was already lying on the ground. When you and Ema came in, Machi admits that he did escaped through the air vent.

Klavier insists that Machi shot LeTouse, but Machi is pleading otherwise. You then ask Machi about the cocoon. You ask him if he smuggled them in. Machi refuses to tell, according to Lamiroir.

Although seeing little reason to continue, The Judge calls a recess.

Recess

Machi insists that he didn't shoot LeTouse. He just went into the dressing room, and found LeTouse's body. Afterwords, he heard gunshots. Gunshots AFTER the body was found? Anyways, the vent he escaped through was connected to the stage and backstage. Machi learned this from the "magician".

Machi refuses to testify about the cocoon. Maybe he is scared about the Borginian death penalty. It looks like you can't get him to talk. Probably calling up someone else would do the trick, even if it hurts.

You call up Lamiroir to the stand. Yesterday, she was assaulted by someone. The assailant wanted her dead, but she escaped. She was taken to the hospital and recovered. Klavier says he didn't get such reports. Why would someone want Lamiroir killed? Maybe s/he didn't want her to say anything, about the murder no less! Perhaps Lamiroir is hiding something, a "nugget" of truth. Lamiroir is sure that Machi is innocent, and that she heard the voice of the shooter, which belonged to Daryan.

Lamiroir will testify about what she witnessed (or what she heard in this case).

Lamiroir's Testimony: What I Heard

Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's' Testimony
- What I Heard -
  1. I was on my way from the stage to the backstage exit.
  2. That's when I heard them: Mr. LeTouse and the detective.
  3. I heard the faint sound of a gunshot and stopped. Then I heard another gunshot.
  4. There was the smell of gunpowder... I knew I must tell someone, but...
  5. I was in a hurry, so I kept moving past the small window.

What I Heard: Cross-Examination

Press on the 2nd statement. Then ask, What were they talking about?. Lamiroir says she only heard one phrase correctly! The shooter (probably Daryan) said "It's over. Press the switch! Now!" A switch? That is strange. Maybe you could shed a little light on the subject. A new state is added:

  • From the small window, I heard a voice say, "Press the switch! Now!"

Present the Remote Trigger. It looks like this is the "switch" the shooter was mentioning, but how could the killer be telling LeTouse to press a switch? Present the Headset. They probably be using it to talk to someone from backstage, to the stage. Klavier asks how it was able to connect to the players. After all, the communication was only limited to thirty feet. You present the diagram, which shows that the direct distance between the stage and backstage is under thirty feet!

Klavier will now ask you about the "switch" it isn't found at the crime scene, so there's no point to it between the switch and the crime. Klavier asks what the switch triggers, Present the Igniter. You show the court (nearly burning it and The Judge down) that the switch triggers a fire in the igniter! Remember Klavier's burning guitar? This is probably the purpose of the igniter, to burn up such a perfect instrument!

It should be obvious in this state, but Klavier objects again. He reminds you that his guitar burned during the second act, yet the shooting took place in the third, so how is this possible? You say that the shooting might NOT have occurred in the third act. Klavier argues that you and Ema heard the bullets on the third, but you counter by saying that Machi did hear it also, but the killer wasn't seen.

You then conclude that the killer said "Pull the switch! Now!" and the next moment, Klavier's guitar caught in flames. Your conclusion? The shooting took place on the second act, not the third act!

Now you go into a conversation about the killer following the lyrics. It looks like the killer did the shooting before the burning. Why? Probably because it is to interfere with the investigation, fooling everyone into thinking that s/he had an alibi.

It sounds like it makes sense, but Klavier objects otherwise. He rminds you once more that it was Lamiroir that claims she heard the killer say that, but the window was closed. How could she have heard the voice? Answer that She was somewhere else. When asked where, Present the Air Vent on the diagram. She was up there. It's the only logical explanation. Apparently Lamiroir doesn't know the English word "air vent", thinking that the opening was a window. Lamiroir will admit that she was up there! Why was she up there? Lamiroir says it's hard to say, but she will testify anyways.

Lamiroir's Testimony: Above the Ceiling

Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's' Testimony
- Above the Ceiling -
  1. Yes, I was above the ceiling when I heard the voice.
  2. I had heard there was a, er, "small window" there before.
  3. It was in the middle of my performance... I had no time to report what I had heard.
  4. As to why I was there... I cannot say.
  5. I am bound to secrecy on this matter.

Bound to secrecy? Lamiroir says she could say why. Maybe she is hiding something. Is she forced to? Is this why there are cross-examinations?

Above the Ceiling: Cross-Examination

Present the Video Tape on Lamiroir's 4th statement. The reason she is hiding it is because of the illusion. As seen in the video, Lamiroir disappears and reappears at the back of the stage. She would have to go through the air vent to complete the illusion! Klavier knows about it, but he doesn't know all about the details. The Judge, however, points out that it took her twenty seconds to go from the stage to the forum. Lamiroir can't say anything, so it looks like it's up to you.

Time for Lamiroir's last testimony.

Lamiroir's Testimony: The Big Illusion

Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's
Lamiroir's' Testimony
- The Big Illusion -
  1. I followed the route exactly as I was instructed.
  2. There is an emergency exit in the backstage, where a stagehand waited.
  3. From there, one can enter the forum on the opposite side from the stage.
  4. The plan was for me to move there in two minutes.
  5. I was on my way, when I heard the voice.

The Big Illusion: Cross-Examination

Two minutes!? Press on the 4th statement. Lamiroir says she had to stop. Why? When given the choice, choose Present evidence, then Present Lamiroir's Brooch. You conclude about the teleportation, the Lamiroir before disappearing and the Lamiroir after, were two different people! Klavier says the latter was Valant, disguised as a woman. The real Lamiroir had dropped her brooch between the vents while she was running. It seems amazing that Valant could sing perfectly. Perhaps it was recorded? Klavier says it was live.

A new statement is added.

  • I... had to keep singing, even while I moved.

Press on that statement. She was singing the whole time? Lamiroir says Klavier hates recordings, so she used a microphone.

So if she used a microphone, have the shooter's voice and the gunshots been heard? Maybe LaTouse and the killer didn't notice Lamiroir singing above them, because the speakers drowned her out. Lamiroir then remembers something. When she heard the shots, she stopped singing for a moment. How? Klavier reminds you of the mixing board he gave you the night of the crime. (Remember, when you used it to determine who missed the cue). In the lyrics sheet, Lamiroir was supposed to sing "Pleasure" twice. However, she only sang it once! Because she had heard the shot!

You have now proven that the murder took place in the second act, rather than the first! Now Klavier asks you something. What if Lamiroir was testifying to protect Machi? He likes to call in one last witness, Daryan Crescend as a suspect of murdering LaTouse! The Judge will call a recess.

Trial Mode: Part Two

Recess

You get a visit from, guess who? Phoenix! He tells you that he is on a "secret mission". Like LeTouse? Phoenix apparently knows what you are doing. Getting Machi off the hook and going after Daryan.

Phoenix will leave, but before he does so, he gives you a present from Ema. It looks like fragments of firecrackers she found at the crime scene. The Burnt Fragments are added to the Court Record. Phoenix tells you to find Daryan's "igniter" with this, as it is near impossible to prove Daryan's guilt under "conventional methods". He is calm and collected, so perceiving is out of the picture.

Phoenix leaves as you reenter. Just what does he mean by finding Daryan's "igniter"?

Klavier doesn't seem happy that his friend is a suspect. Daryan will testify predictably against Lamiroir's testimony.

Daryan's Testimony: Daryan's Rebuttal

Daryan's
Daryan's
Daryan's' Testimony
- Daryan's Rebuttal -
  1. The diva's lying, plain and simple. She's got nothing to back up her story.
  2. In the first place, she never heard my voice!
  3. She "forgot the words because she heard gunshots"? As if!
  4. Didn't Detective Ema Skye hear those gunshots during the third set, anyway?
  5. The shooting took place when I was on stage, man!

Daryan's Rebuttal: Cross-Examination

O Daryan's 4th statement, Present the Burnt Fragments. Those fragments used to be firecrackers, right? If so, then could these firecrackers have been the "gunshots" you heard on the third act? Klavier will then say he received a report on the firecrackers, and so he decides to make Daryan a witness. Daryan wants proof that the firecrackers were set off when there were two people at the door. Klavier will present a headset. You found this at the backstage door, so it looks like someone placed it there to hear any witnesses.

Now Daryan wants you to prove that the crime did occur at the second act. You don't look like you are ready to present it. A new statement will be added.

  • The shooting took place during the second set? If you're so sure, let's see your proof.

Present the Mixing Board. It has recorded multiple parts of The Guitar Serenade. Lamiroir stopped singing for a brief moment at the time of the crime. It seems you should show where the stammering took place. You examine the mixing board. Mute everything except for track 1. Notice anything suspicious? On the first part of the track, you hear gunshots! Present the 1st part on the second segment of the song.

It looks like what Lamiroir said is true, but you only heard one gunshot rather than two. Probably the second shot wasn't heard, because Lamiroir was farther from the vent. You then concern the murder weapon. The reason Daryan missed his cue is because he used the heavy gun, which is powerful enough to dislocate his shoulder on kickback. Daryan says he was a trained shooter, but Klavier conters his statement saying the police would use lighter guns.

Daryan will now say he didn't shoot LeTouse. He will testify how.

Daryan's Testimony: Proof of Innocence

Daryan's
Daryan's
Daryan's' Testimony
- Proof of Innocence -
  1. C'mon! Why would I even want to kill that manager?
  2. You want a reason? Easy. I got no motive, man!
  3. This was that diva's first trip to this country, right?
  4. How could I possibly know her manager?
  5. If I didn't know him, why would I want to kill him!?

Proof of Innocence: Cross-Examination

You can only do one thing, Present the Replica on the 5th statement. Klavier will say the reason behind the banning. If it was sold everywhere else, it would be used to create deadly poisons. Remember, LeTouse was an agent, so why did Daryan kill him. Maybe it's probably because Daryan was smuggling, and LeTouse caught him. Daryan denies it. Time for his last testimony.

Daryan's Testimony: Cocoon Smuggling

Daryan's
Daryan's
Daryan's' Testimony
- Cocoon Smuggling -
  1. International Affairs got a memo about these cocoons.
  2. Interpol's all hot and bothered about 'em.
  3. Can't sell 'em on the black market. Too dangerous.
  4. Yeah, cocoon smuggling ain't exactly lucrative anymore.
  5. Man, I'm in International Affairs! I know the deal!

Cocoon Smuggling: Cross-Examination

Present the Newspaper Article on Daryan's 3rd statement. Remember the Chief of Justice's son? He is infected with Incuritis. Only the cocoon can cure him, so Daryan probably made a deal with the Chief of Justice himself, but even if the deal went through, he would still be in hot water. Daryan wants proof that he made a deal. Three new statements are added.

  • Borginian Customs is very thorough. Everything and everyone gets checked.
  • Cocoon possession will get you arrested on the spot, and then sentenced to death.
  • Hey, man, if there's a way to get cocoons out of there I'd sure like to know.

Oh, there's a way all right. Present Prosecutor Gavin's Guitar on the last of the given statements. How they got the cocoon here is the same way they got the guitar here. The Guitar was sent here in a bagged and vacuumed box. It made it to the concert untouched! It wasn't open before the concert, so how does this relate to the cocoon? Well, someone with good access to the guitar would use it as a mule for the miracle cure! Some such as Daryan!!

At the concert, the killer ran into a new problem, the guitar was wrapped neatly. If it were already open before Klavier opened it, things would get too suspicious. Then there was LeTouse. He knew something was up in the guitar, so if he looked in the guitar, things wouldn't go well with the guitarist, but he was prepared. If things would go wrong, he would burn the guitar, thus eliminating the cocoon!

It sounds like very good motive, but Daryan persists. He asks a question, he never went to Borginia, so how dd he manage to bring the cocoon here, and burn the guitar. Remember what the killer said when Lamiroir was passing by? It sounded like he had an accomplice. When asked who, Present Machi Tobaye's Profile.

It sounds like a good person, but what about lamiroir, she's from Borginia too. It's impossible. Remember on the second act, the platform rose under Klavier and his guitar. She would be off the range of the ingniter, so if Lamiroir was at the vent above her dressing room, she could not have burned the guitar because it was out of reach!

Daryan will then show you a problem. He shows you a video, which shows Machi playing a piano. He could not have pressed the switch if he was busy playing. Lamiroir wasn't the accomplice, as you have proven, and the pianist didn't miss a cue. Klavier says there is something odd in the performance. Really? When asked if you can prove something, say I can prove it. You don't have direct proof, but you can prove it's possibility.

Present the Mixing Board. You come to a possibility that Machi could be playing with one hand, and this mixing board will prove it. Mute all of the parts, this time leaving the 4th one be. Present at the first segment of the song. It sounds quite graceful compared to the part where Klavier's guitar started burning. It wouldn't matter if you were playing one hand or two on the second segment!

Setting off the "ingiter"

It looks like The Judge could wrap this up now, yet Daryan is STILL not giving up! You need decisive proof that Daryan did kill LeTouse. Remember what Phoenix said back there, it's hard to win under the current legal system, especially under conventional methods, so you need to find Daryan's "igniter" and "set it off". This is it, time to find that igniter! When asked to show what can set it off, Call a witness. When asked who, Present Machi Tobaye's Profile.

Daryan says that Machi is too afriad to talk, because of Borginian death penalty, but you counter this statement by saying Machi doesn't have to worry about a thing here. Here in THIS country, you don't get sentenced to death by just smuggling, furthermore, if Machi doesn't confess here now, he will be tried by the Borginian court. It would be over for Machi, but not in this country, where there are no such laws!

Since Machi was Daryan's accomplice, he probably knows everything in Daryan's plan, so since the laws of Borginia don't apply here, and Machi won't get killed, it looks like Daryan doesn't have to worry about going to jail anymore, since he is getting arrested anyways!

Machi is called up and will be tried for smuggling not at Borginia, but in a country where he doesn't have to worry about a thing.

Machi Tobaye is found Not Guilty!

What REALLY Happened

It all started with a deal between Daryan Crescend, Guitarist of a famous rockband, Gavinners, and Machi Tobaye, pianist and guider of famous singer Lamiroir. Both Daryan and Machi needed money, so they made a deal. In the US, The Chief of Justice's son is infected with Incuritis, and only the special cocoons in Borginia could cure it. IF one brings out one of the cocoons will suffer a death penalty, in Borginian law anyways. They would sneak one of the cocoons to the US, sell it, and make a fortune!

The plan started when Klavier Gavin, leader and vocalist of the group visited Borginia, where Machi lives, He has taken a liking to Lamiroir and decides to let her guest star in one of his concerts. Lamiroir agrees and Klavier leaves the European country. Lamiroir gives him one of her guitars as a present. Machi takes this as an advantage and put the cocoons in the guitar, to sneak it across overseas. He also puts in an igniter, in case something bad happens to the plan.

However, Interpol, an international police force, was on to Machi. They send Romein LeTouse undercover and take a job as Lamiroir's manager. He would eventually start to investigate Machi.

Meanwhile, Klavier contacted Valant Gramarye, former celebrity of magic. They would agree on using Valant's old tricks to create an illusion of Lamiroir teleporting from one side of the stage to another.

It is the night of the concert. Daryan stole Klavier's keys to his guitar case. He opens it and discovered a problem, the guitar was wrapped. It turns out Klavier wanted Lamiroir's guitar in perfect condition, so he used wrapping to ensure it's safety. Daryan knew if he unwrapped the guitar, everyone would get suspicious. He closes up the case and abandons the plan. Klavier couldn't find his keys, so he was forced to break open the case.

Finally, the concert begins. As Daryan was rocking it with the rest of the group on the first act, LeTouse started investigating the room. On the second act, LeTouse confronted Daryan. Meanwhile, Lamiroir was to run through the air vent above (part of Valant's teleportation trick). Daryan used the headset to tell Machi to press the switch in the piano ("Press the swith! Now!"). He does so and Klavier's guitar was set ablaze, along with the cocoon and the evidence. Daryan then takes LeTouse's gun and shoots him. Missing once and hitting him the second time. The large force of the kickback dislocates Daryan's arm, which would cause him to miss a cue in the third act.

Lamiroir heard the gunshots, and Daryan's voice and stopped singing briefly. She continued along the vent to finish the illusion, since she was in a hurry. She wasn't sure if what she saw through was a window and if she heard gunshots. (Lamiroir is blind)

LeTouse writes out his ID number as he lays there dying, so the police would figure out who he really is. Daryan notices and wipes out the number. He then sets firecrackers under the sofa and makes a trigger device that would set them of. he then discards LaTouse's headset and places it on the doorway, so if there were anyone next to it, Daryan would set them off to create "witnesses" (they sound like gunfire).

Those witnesses were rookie attorney Apollo Justice, and detective Ema Skye. They were discussing just outside the dressing room, so Daryan could hear them. Meanwhile, Machi goes into the room and discovers the body. He hears the firecrackers go off. Startled, he climbs up the ladder and into the air vent.

Apollo and Ema heard the "gunshots" and bust in, seeing LeTouse's body. Lamiroir hears the gunshots also and moves into the room. Ema leaves as Apollo hears LeTouse's final words. Lamiroir leaves the room, undetected with Apollo hearing a door closing.

As Apollo went out to investigate (under Trucy Wright's suggestion) Daryan comes back after the concert was called off and takes LeTouse's body, his bass, and puts them on the raisin stage. He then knocks out Machi and places on there too.

When Machi was arrested due to the evidence pointing against him, Daryan thought he got away with everything, that is until Lamiroir accuses him for murder (she could recognize his voice, as she does with everyone). After the trial, he attacks Lamiroir, without making a sound of his voice and tries to kill her. Lamiroir, however, escapes into Daryan's base case.

Turnabout Serenade: Epilogue

Phoenix and Lamiroir drop by. Right now, Lamiroir (with Phoenix's suggestion) is considering having an eye operation, as until today, she was afraid to see the "light" that hid from her from an accident. Lamiroir feared that something bad would happen if she could she again. But now she is ready. If she can see again, she will take up painting (well she is the "landscape painter of sound"). You also inspired Phoenix into hurrying up with his "secret mission".

After the trial, The Guitar Serenade became a hit! As they always say, "Next time you write a ballad, have them catch the killer at the end!"

Though you did find the truth in this case, even more questions arise. Who IS Lamiroir? What accident separated the Troupe Gramarye? Who is Zak Gramarye? Why did the Troupe break up? And most importantly, what was Phoenix's secret mission? And what is this new legal system? All that, and the questions risen in the previous cases, including seven years ago and then some will all be answered in the next and last case of the game. Hopefully Justice is ready for this legendary adventure!
