Castlevania II: Simon's Quest features Simon Belmont in 1698, 7 years after the events of the first Castlevania game. Simon this time around has to take up the legendary Vampire Killer Whip as Dracula, moments before being vanquished cast a curse upon Simon that would end his days prematurely if Dracula was not re-raised. Also, Dracula's minions have nothing better to do than raid villages and stir up trouble until the next coming of Dracula, so Belmont also has to deal with them.
