Wood Man's stage is a forest inhabited by robots that resemble wildlife, such as robot bats called Battons, mechanical hares caled Robbits, and atomic chickens called Cooks. The Metal Blade is a useful weapon against almost all enemies, especially the bats which hang overhead and attack by flying down to collide with Mega Man. Also, it can be used to fire downward to destroy the mechanical apes called Monking before they jump onto the same platform as Mega Man.

He will cause leaves to drift down from the top of the screen, which damage Mega Man on contact, and at the same time he will launch his leaf shield at Mega Man. The attacks can all be avoided by correctly timed jumps, but Wood Man keeps advancing towards Mega Man, making each subsequent attack more difficult to avoid.
The Crash Bomber and Atomic Fire work well against Wood Man. Crash Bomber does considerable damage and it can hurt him even when his leaf shield is active. Atomic Fire, although unable to penetrate Wood Man's defenses, takes off a large amount of Wood Man's energy. If you can hit an unshielded Wood Man with a fully charged Atomic Fire blast it will kill him in one hit.
Defeating Wood Man awards Leaf Shield, which surrounds Mega Man with impenetrable leaves as long as he stands still. This shield becomes a projectile when Mega Man moves, firing off in the direction pressed on the D-Pad (even vertically!).
