Super Street Fighter II Turbo (hereafter referred to as SSF2T) was the fully realized form of Super Street Fighter II. SSF2 had been rushed to the market before SSF2T could be completed. SSF2T marks the final iteration of Street Fighter II, and is considered the cannonical version of the SF2 series (i.e. this version depicts how the SF2 tournament actually occurred.)

In addition to speeding gameplay up substantially from SSF2 (and providing the player with the option to choose the speed after selecting a character), there are two important changes to the game. The first is the introduction of Super Moves which is now a standard in 2D fighting games. Super Moves are not fatalities (made popular by the competing Mortal Kombat series) as many players had suspected, but rather powerful moves that are capable of devistating damage if they connect. The other is the introduction of a mysterious secret character whose history is somehow linked to Ryu and Ken, and whose moves are designed to make his appear more demon than human. This character, called Akuma in the States but known as Gouki in Japan, went on to become something of an icon for Capcom, who hid him in several other fighting games as well.

This version of SF2 has seen several released on many "next-generation" platforms, usually included in compilation titles that included the game with other Street Fighter games. It was one of the more popular and recognizable titles released for the ill-fated 3DO system. It was officially released for the Sega Dreamcast for use with Capcom's online battle system known as Matching Service. It was later remade with new backgrounds and endings with updated plot lines for the Game Boy Advance as Super Street Fighter II: Turbo Revival.

The cast (aside from Akuma), story, controls, and rules for SSF2T are identicle to the SSF2, which is itself built up from the original Street Fighter II. Please see the SF2 guide and the the SSF2 article for any questions regarding how to play. A list of the updates beyond SSF2 can be found below.

Please see the Super Street Fighter II Turbo move list for a list of all the special moves.

Updates and changes

  • The game returns to a speeds up again from Super, but the player is given the chance to select from 3 different speeds to control the pace of the game. (Essentially SSF2 speed, somewhere between SSF2 and SF2T, and a speed a little faster than SF2T)
  • A secret character, Akuma, will come out and fight you at the end of the game instead of M. Bison if you have met the criteria (which generally consists of exceptional playing) needed to encounter him.
  • The secret character Akuma is also selectable by a special code, but the selectable version of Akuma is weaker than the CPU controlled version.
  • Every character (with the single exception of Akuma) now has a Super meter that grows as the player attacks and get attacked, until it fills up, at which point the player may access a unique and powerful super move.
  • Every character has been given new abilities in addition to their super moves.

Super Moves

In addition to the health bar shown at the top of the screen, each player now has a super meter at the bottom. As the player attacks and damages the opponent, and as the player takes damage from the opponent, the super meter fills up incrementally. When the super meter fills to capacity, the player is given access to a Super Move. Super Moves has slightly more complex motions to input. When they are successfully executed, the game will freeze for a brief moment, and then the animation and attack associated with the super move begins. If the super move connects and is not blocked, it will do substantial damage to the opponent. Super moves can be used to turn the tide of a battle. Every player (except for the secret character Akuma) has one unique super move.

Secret character Akuma

In this game, Capcom introduces it's first 2D Fighting secret character Akuma. Known as Gouki, he is the brother of the master of Ryu and Ken, known as Gouken. Gouki and Gouken were taught the art of the Ansatsuken fighting style. Ansatsuken was designed as a form of martial arts that could be used for murder. When Gouken passed the knowledge of Ansatsuken to Ryu and Ken, he withheld the killing technique of the style from his students. Gouki on the other hand, became consumed with it, becoming more demon than human as he allowed the murderous intent within him to grow. Eventually he returned to Gouken's dojo for one final showdown, and walked away as the only survivor. Now Gouki wanders the earth in search of only the greatest fighting challenges capable of feeding his never ending hunger for battle. Though his story is primarily told through the Street Fighter Alpha series, he is first seen here, obliterating M. Bison before challenging the player if the player was strong enough to fulfill the requirements to face him. The move that Akuma uses on M. Bison is called Shun Goku Satsu, but was named the "Bison Killer" by fans. Although Akuma has access to the move in several other games, he can not access it in SSF2T other than to kill M. Bison before the battle begins. He returns, much older, in the second part of the Street Fighter III series.

Secrets

Selecting Akuma

Arcade: On the character select screen, leave the cursor on Ryu or Ken for 3 seconds, then move to T. Hawk, Guile, Cammy, and back to Ryu or Ken, pausing on each one for 3 seconds. Finally, press PPP + Start. If it doesn't work, quickly tap PPP + Start again. (The highlighted letters are supposedly meant to spell out Akuma, but this is just a theory.)

Console: On most home conversion of the game, you simply need to highlight Ryu and press and hold the left and right shoulder buttons to select Akuma.

Fight against Akuma

Also known as Shin-Akuma (or the true Akuma), the computer controlled Akuma is much stronger and faster than the player controlled variety. He has the ability to throw not one, but two air fireballs back to back. In order to face him, you must play the game and lose no more than three rounds by the time you face M. Bison. You must get at least three perfects against your opponents and you may not continue your game if you lose. If you succeed, Akuma will appear just as the fight is about to begin and kill M. Bison before challenging you.

Play as the SSF2 version of a character

When selecting a character to play with in SSF2T, you can opt for the SSF2 version of that character instead of the Turbo version. This mean of course that you will not have the benefit of a Super Meter. In many cases, this is made up for by the fact that characters were generally toned down in order to make the Super Meter a more important aspect of game play. To select the SSF2 version, select a character press and hold the File:Arcade-Button-Lpunch.png button, and then enter the following your selection's series of joystick directions to activate the SSF2 version:

Alternatively, if you're having trouble entering these directions in precisely, you can attempt to wiggle the joystick in the two directions that your character requires. This usually works as well.

For Consoles, typically you need only hold the right shoulder button when selecting your character in order to activate the SSF2 style.
