This is where it all begins, Pallet Town, home to you and your mom, your rival and his sister, and the Pallet Town Pokémon Research Lab. The head of this research lab is none other than the world renowned Professor Oak, who happens to be your rival's grandfather. But don't worry, he doesn't play favorites. In fact, he will give you first choice in Pokémon when the time comes.

==Choosing your Starter Pokémon==
{{sidebar|width=200px|title=Only one available|contents=You can only take one of the three starter Pokémon. The other two won't be available in your game at all. Get used to this staple of the Pokémon games. It will keep happening with other choices later on.}}
Different players have different opinions regarding the choice. The important part is that none of the options is a bad one or a worse one than another. Normally players hang on to their starter Pokémon here obtained for the rest of their journey, forming a bound and an unspoken rule, although the game technically doesn't force you keep using this first Pokémon that you get. Your choice determines the choice of your rival, who chooses a contrasting Pokémon, as well as which Legendary Beast Pokémon is released at the end of the game.

==Choose your Pokémon==
You may choose one of the three Pokémon based on your taste, as they were designed precisely to cover different tastes that player's may have. Charmander may struggle more against the first two gym leaders. In story-line terms, it's logical to pick the starter whose evolution is the mascot for the release being played. Thus, Charmander matches the FireRed version, while Bulbasaur matches the LeafGreen version. Squirtle has no match.
{{sidebar|width=200px|title=Choices, choices|contents=Bulbasaur and Squirtle are good choices for beginners, however Squirtle will have harder time against later gyms. Charmander is a choice for more experienced players, because he will have a tough time against the first two gym leaders.}}
You start off your task by looking in the obvious place: the research lab. But oddly enough, he isn't there. So you check your rivals home, but you only find his sister. Professor Oak seems to have left town. Maybe you should head out in search of him.  But the moment that you set one foot outside of town, someone calls to you and warns you not to go. It's Professor Oak!

Professor Oak brings you back to the lab and, after assembling together with your rival, offers you the choice of three Pokémon from which you will select your very first. Choose carefully: Not only will the Pokémon you pick be your strongest ally for the next few hours, it will also determine which Pokémon your rival picks as well.{{-}}
Advanced players redo the choice a few times to try to get a Pokémon generated with better stats and traits for their run, although breeding is their ultimate finetuning.

You'll have a tough match ahead of you, since your rival has shrewdly chosen the Pokémon that has an advantage over yours.  Fortunately, your rival isn't much of a fighter, and wastes time with defensive techniques like Growl and Tail Whip instead of just choosing the attacks and going for the quick K.O. If you start to run low on health, feel free to use that Potion you picked up from your room; you can get a free one to replace it soon.

Pallet Town
Computers...
Get used to using the computer, you'll need it often, although the one you have in your room isn't fully-featured.

You start in your bedroom. Withdraw the Potion from your computer just in case your rival puts up a good fight. Downstairs, if your Pokémon later get tired, Mom will heal 'em, for free. After exploring your house, step out to explore town.

Pallet Town is home to you and your mom, your rival and his sister Daisy, and the Pokémon Research Laboratory. Its head is the world renowned Professor Oak, known for his Pokémon studies, who also happens to be your rival's grandfather. But don't worry, he doesn't play favorites.

You may look inside Professor Oak's Laboratory, but he's away at first. He seems to have left town. In the moment that you set foot outside of town to search him, someone calls to you and warns you not to go. It's him, Professor Oak! After assembling together with your rival, Professor Oak offers you the choice of three Pokémon from which you will take your very first.

Choosing your Starter Pokémon

Only one available
You can only take one of the three starter Pokémon. The other two won't be available in your game at all. Get used to this staple of the Pokémon games. It will keep happening with other choices later on.

Advanced players redo the choice a few times to try to get a Pokémon generated with better stats and traits for their run, although breeding is their ultimate finetuning.

Meeting your obnoxious rival

With your first Pokémon in hand, you head for the exit, but your rival decides that he wants to test his mettle against you and challenges you to a duel which you cannot refuse.

Daisy
Daisy plays an important role at the end of the game, as she will deal with your Pokémon's Frienship level, used in some bonus evolution lines.
Your Rival

It can be a bit of a tricky match, since your rival chooses the Pokémon that has an advantage over yours. Fortunately, your rival won't always make the best choices, giving you the upper hand. If, by chance, you start to run low on hit points, you may use that Potion withdrawn from the computer, given that this battle cannot be repeated, although not using healing items during battle is a way of playing adopted by many players who prefer a more wholesome challenge, as the game isn't too difficult, despite a close-call first encounter. Losing the match isn't too bad: all you miss out on is your rival's 80 and a free level up. Once the battle is over, you're ready to leave town and travel along Route #1.

Your lifelong rival downplays you and carries a grudge against you, but his sister Daisy is nice and thinks you're OK. Stop by their home just North of the Laboratory and next to yours when you later return to Pallet Town in order to obtain a map for the region from her.

Items

  • Town Map (Given to you by Daisy at a later point)
  • Pokédex (Given to you by Professor Oak at a later point after delivering him his Parcel)
