Creating A Character

Creating a character in Deus Ex can be difficult for some. Knowing what to have and what not to have is a hard decision. The following picture will show what kind of skills you can learn in Deus Ex. NOTE: The PlayStation 2 version character creation is the same thing as the PC version character creation, so everything here still applies.

The character creation screen

Alright, let's take a look at character creation in Deus Ex. Your code name, by default, is always JC Denton. You can type in whatever name you want for your real name, though it will not be said in-game. Choose your appearance. There are five different options you can choose from. You only have a limited amount of skill points, so you must choose wisely. You can always downgrade a skill if you made a mistake. We have several choices, so let's look at them step-by-step.

By default you already start with the trained pistol skill. You can downgrade it if you like. The computers skill is important for hacking computers to open doors and ATMs for money. I always get the computer skill when I start the game, and it is highly recommended that you do too. Electronics determines how many multitools you'll need to bypass a keypad. The beginning of the game doesn't have many, so it is recommended that you get trained in electronics. Environmental training is your resistance to toxic gases. There's not a lot in the beginning of the game, so it is useless. Lockpicking, like Electronics, determines the amount of lockpicks you need to bypass a door. This is very important for finding several useful items, so it is highly recommended. Medicine determines how many medkits you must use to fully heal yourself. This isn't extremely important in the beginning, since you can pretty much heal yourself fully with just one or two medkits. Swimming is how fast your swim underwater. This is useless for the beginning of the game, so I don't recommend it.

Weapons: Demolition determines how well you can use grenades. If you're a big fan of grenades, you may want this, but I don't recommend it, since there are very few in the beginning. Weapons: Heavy determines how well you can use Heavy Weapons like Rocket Launchers and Plasma Cannons. This is only important for those who are planning to choose the GEP Gun for their starting secondary weapon. Weapons: Low-Tech is how well you can use a melee weapon. This is for those who prefer stealth over brute force. It is only recommended for those who plan on using more melee weapons than guns. Weapons: Pistol is how well you can use a Pistol, and it is already trained, so there is no need to improve upon it more unless you really want to. Weapons: Rifle is how well you can use the Sniper. For those who love sniping, this is recommended, as you can receive the Sniper in the beginning of the game.

Well, that just about covers it. When you're ready, you can finally start the game! If you would like more information on these skills, check out my Skills section of the guide.
