There are 76 different classes in the game, plus the "Hero of Legend" or "Opinion Leader". Such classes can be grouped into families; furthermore, some families are related because members of one family can recruit members of a stronger family. This leaves four main groups.
From a different point of view, there are 36 different "end-of-line" classes.
Class alignment[edit | edit source]
- For more details on this topic, see ../Alignment & Reputation.
An important role-playing aspect of Ogre Battle is the alignment of the units. This is an attribute ranging from 0 to 100. A high alignment represents holiness, a low alignment is evil.
In order to change class, it is necessary not only that a character has a sufficient level of experience and charisma, but also that his/her alignment is in a specific range. This section summarizes the alignment requirements for each class.
It is advisable to form units with classes that have similar alignment.
Basic class | Holy careers | Neutral careers | Evil careers |
---|---|---|---|
Fighter | Samurai/S. Master Knight/Paladin |
Doll mage/master Beast man/B. master/Dragoner/D. master |
Wizard/Mage/Sorcerer/Lich Wild man/Evil One/Vampyre Ninja/ N. master |
Amazon | Cleric/Shaman/Monk Valkyrie/Muse |
Princess | Witch |
Dragon | Silver/Gold/Platinum d. | Red d. 1/Red d. 2/Salamand | Black d./Tiamat/Zombie d. |
Giant | Titan | Ice giant | Fire giant |
Hawk man | Eagle man | - | Raven man |
In the sub-sections below, the value between brackets is the alignment range required to upgrade the class. In some instances, a special item is required instead of level/charisma/alignment range.
Holy classes[edit | edit source]
Holy characters should fight enemies of the same level (chivalrous!) or higher (heroic!) to get even higher alignment; they fight better in daylight; they will increase your reputation when they liberate a city.
Note that a Knight can be turned into an evil Vampyre if he's equipped with a Blood Kiss.

Evil classes[edit | edit source]
Evil characters should fight enemies of lower level (it is evil to bully the weak!) to get an even lower alignment; they fight better at nighttime; they should not liberate cities, because they would decrease your reputation.
In daytime, Tigermen and Werewolves revert to their human form (basic Fighter), while Vampyres sleep in their coffin.
Sorcerers and Liches can summon undead units (Skeleton, Ghost, Wraith, Phantom) anywhere, not only in towns.

Neutral classes[edit | edit source]

Dragoners can recruit Dragons (neutral) and Wyverns (evil).
Dragon Masters can recruit Red Dragons (neutral), Silver Dragons (holy) and Black Dragons (evil).

Doll Mages can recruit Golems.
Doll Masters can recruit Stone Golems.

Faerie, Pixie, Sylph[edit | edit source]
Faeries can be recruited by Princesses or by Angels/Cherubims/Seraphims.
Faeries, Pixies and Sylphs are small units that cannot be leaders. They can upgrade independently from their Charisma. Their "slap" attack is very weak, therefore they should better stay in the back row.
Class | Requirements | Terrain | Front row | Back row | Recruits |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Faerie | - | Low sky | 1 Slap (physical attack) | 2 Kisses (strengthens ally) | - |
Pixie | Lv.10, Ali. 30-70 | Low sky | 2 Slaps (physical attack) | 2 Kisses (strengthens ally) | - |
Sylph | Lv.20, Ali. 40-80 | Low sky | 2 Slaps (physical attack) | 1 Magic Missile (holy attack on all enemies) | - |
Golem, Rock golem[edit | edit source]
Golems can be recruited by Doll Mages. Stone Golems can be recruited by Doll Masters.
Classes without alignment[edit | edit source]
These classes can have any alignment, and can team up with any other class.

Amazon, Princess[edit | edit source]
- See also #Amazon, Cleric, Shaman, Monk

The Princess class is independent from alignment: it can be obtained by equipping an Amazon with a Royal Crown. There are two ways to obtain a Royal/Dream Crown; in both cases, it is necessary to have a high reputation.
All the characters in the same unit with the Princess get an extra attack, Princess included. The Starlight attack is clearly better than the Stardust, therefore the Princess should better stay in the back row.
Class | Requirements | Terrain | Front row | Back row | Recruits |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Amazon | - | Forest | 1 Arrow (physical attack) | 2 Arrows (physical attack) | - |
Princess | Equip Royal Crown | Plains | 1 Stardust (physical attack) | 1 Starlight (holy attack on all enemies) | Faerie |
Pumpkin, Halloween[edit | edit source]
Pumpkinheads can be recruited in Deneb's Garden. You can encounter them in the light-coloured mountains and befriend them.
You can have either Halloweens or Deneb the Witch in your army. If you condemn Deneb, the inhabitants of a town in Deneb's Garden will gift you a Rotten Pumpkin every time you visit the stage; equip it to a Pumpkinhead to upgrade it, regardelss of alignment. On the other hand, if you forgive Deneb, she will set you on a side quest; if you complete the side quest with very low reputation, she will join your army (with four Pumpkinheads).
Of course, there is also a very slim chance to obtain a rotten pumpkin from a hidden treasure or a defeated enemy.
Deneb's side quest grants you a Glass Pumpkin. If you equip it to any witch (e.g. Deneb herself), she will be able to recruit Pumpkinheads in towns.
Class | Requirements | Terrain | Front row | Back row | Recruits |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pumpkin | - | Forest | 1 Pumpkin (halves 1 enemy's HP) | 1 Pumpkin (halves 1 enemy's HP) | - |
Halloween | Equip rotten pumpkin | Forest | 2 Pumpkins (halves 1 enemy's HP) | 2 Pumpkins (halves 1 enemy's HP) | - |
Iron Golem[edit | edit source]
The Iron Golem can only be obtained in two ways: (1) In Antalia, if you find and liberate a hidden Temple; (2) in Organa, if you meet it as a neutral character and befriend it.
