This is a FAQ for Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy for the Playstation 2
==Story==
from the talented developers at Naughty Dog.
The story begins with Jak and Daxter, making their way to Misty Island, against Samos', the Green Sages, demands. After arriving, they see two people addressing an army of evil Lurkers. The duo prepare to leave, but are attacked by a large Lurker. Jak manages to destroy it using a barrel of Eco, but the explosion throws Daxter into a pool of Dark Eco. Daxter flies back out of the pit, transformed into an ottsel, a hybrid of an otter and a weasel. Returning to their village of Sandover, they seek help from Samos who states that only Gol Acheron and his sister Maia, the Sage of Dark Eco who lives far to the North, could change Daxter back.

Jak and Daxter must collect power cells to make their way North. Along the way, they find that each of the other Eco Sages have been kidnapped by Gol and Maia to power a precursor robot to take over the world and shape it, with dark eco, into their image. Jak and Daxter save the other sages and destroy the robot with Gol and Maia in it, with the use of the rare White Eco.

2. Story
========
Here is the story of the world of Jak & Daxter from what can be pieced together
from the demo, preview video, and behind the scenes video. All three are
available on the Playstation Underground Holiday 2001 demo disc.

Game Story:
Jak and Daxter are two elf-like friends that live on one of a group of islands.
As usual with many pairs of friends, they are a truly 'odd' couple: Jak is the
strong, silent type while Daxter is a seemingly endless source of wisecracks.
At some point before the game begins, Daxter is hit by some Dark Eco sludge and
is turned into an 'otsel' (part otter, part weasel). Generally, the dangerous
Dark Eco sludge is very rare and was stored in various locations at some point
in the past by the Precursors. However, there are a group of beings called the
Lurkers who are trying to gather all the Dark Eco sludge in the world to turn
all of the innocent elves in the world into otsels.

It is up to Jak and Daxter to stop the Lurkers' evil plan and find a way to
turn Daxter into his normal elf form.

Demo Story (intro movie):
Jak and Daxter visit the local wiseman to see if they can find some information
on how to turn Daxter back to normal. The wiseman says he has been watching the
Lurkers trying to obtain the source of Dark Eco on the nearby Misty Island. He
decides to send Jak and Daxter to Misty Island to stop the Lurkers.

4. Items & Hazards
==================
These items are part of your quest:

Orbs - These appear as mauve eggs with some writing on them. In the full game,
these are apparently a form of currency. In the demo, the 150 Orbs present only
count toward your completion goal at a rate of about 1% per 15 Orbs. Most Orbs
are in plain sight, but some are contained in other objects such as Metal Boxes
or the Blue Eco Device.

Power Cells - These are your main objectives in the game. They appear as
glowing spheres with smaller spheres surrounding them. On Misty Island, there
are 8 total. On the Progress Screen, you can see which of the 8 objectives you
have completed. Power Cells count toward completion at 10% each.

Scout Flies - These appear as small helicopter-like objects. They do not begin
in plain sight; instead, you need to open the red metal boxes they are in with
a Handstand Dive. In the Demo, there are 7 Scout Flies that count for 10%
combined or about 1.4% each.

These are the hazards of your quest; Health Meter deductions for contact are in
Health Meter units in parenthesis after the hazard name:

The Fish (Fatal) - Surrounding the beach areas of the island is an invisible
boundary line. If you swim past that line or fall into the water away from a
beach, a large fish will come and swallow you whole. The only way to avoid The
Fish once it appears is to get back within the boundary line.

The Fall (1) - Falls from high places can still hurt Jak. However, the only
place this is observed on Misty Island in the Demo is the platform at the top
of the long backbone bridge in the Sculptor's Muse Area. A jump straight off
might be ok, but a double-jump will give Jak a harmful fall. The only way to
avoid it is to not double-jump from that platform in the first place.

The Mist (Fatal) - The Mist only exists in the Mist Pillar Area of Misty
Island. A fall from one of the pillars into The Mist is fatal. (Most locations
in the Mist Pillar Area where this would be an issue would still fall outside
the area that is safe from The Fish anyway)

Purple Lurkers (1) - Purple Lurkers move about in a gorilla-like fashion; that
is, they can stand on two legs but move quicker by dropping to all fours. They
only try to punch Jak and if successful, will stand up and beat their chests.
Purple Lurkers can be killed with one normal punch or kick.

Skeleton Lurkers (1) - These are tall, bulky Lurkers dressed in skeletal armor.
They carry clubs made from a large bone and swing their clubs at Jak when
they're close. These require two normal hits or one hit while under the
influence of Red Eco to kill.

Mud Lurkers (1) - These are purple and white frog-like creatures. They hide in
several of the mud puddles around Misty Island. To attack Jak, they can spit
out fireballs. If Jak is wading in the mud nearby, they will hide. To kill Mud
Lurkers, Jak needs to attack them from the area around the edge of the mud
puddle. Only one hit is needed to kill a Mud Lurker.

Dark Eco Boxes (1) - Yellow and grey boxes marked with a biohazard-like symbol.
These contain the same Dark Eco sludge that turned Daxter into an otsel. When
touched by Jak, they explode. Avoiding the boxes altogether is the idea here,
since Jak can't outrun the explosion. Be careful when punching near a Dark Eco
Box since Jak's punching momentum can easily send him into one by mistake.

Dark Eco Pool (Fatal) - The Dark Eco Pool is at the top of the stairs that
appear when the Arena Area ambush fight is over. Falling into the Dark Eco in
the pool, like falling into The Mist, is fatal.

Balloon Lurker Mines (1) - Attached to each of the Balloon Lurkers' balloons
are two mines, one in front of and one behind the driver. To put it in Daxter's
words "Rule Number 1: Always avoid the mines!". Also, the mines appear to
provide weight to the balloon; attacking the driver is much harder once a
single mine is detached from the balloon since he's higher off the surface of
the bay.

Lurker Cannon Charges (1) - These are bombs shot from the Lurker Cannon on top
of the Arena Area. If Jak enters the Arena Area ambush fight before stopping
the cannon, these will periodically fall into the middle part of the arena. Run
from these if one falls nearby.

Barrels (1) - These appear on the bridge between the top of the Lurker Ship and
the balcony above the Arena Area in the following pattern: 2 rolling then 1
bouncing. Jump over the rolling barrels and duck under the bouncing ones (it is
possible to time a run up the bridge to simply run under the bouncing barrel
instead of ducking)

============
5. Eco Types
============
There are at least 4 types of Eco in the game. Touching a piece of Blue, Red,
or Yellow Eco will add it to your Eco Meter. The Eco Meter steadily drains
after touching pieces of Eco and the effects of Eco are only for the last color
touched (example: Grabbing a piece of Red Eco then a piece of Blue Eco will
give you 2 pieces' worth of Blue Eco power. Grabbing 2 pieces of Blue Eco then
a piece of Red Eco will give you 3 pieces' worth of Red Eco power)

Blue Eco - This appears naturally in several strategic locations on Misty
Island. The effects of Blue Eco are as follows: Jak's movement speed is
increased; nearby Orbs and green health crystals will glow blue then gravitate
toward Jak; activation of the Blue Eco Device when nearby; and activation of
the Blue Eco platform on contact in the Mist Pillar Area.

Red Eco - This appears in several places in the Misty Island demo: naturally in
the Mist Pillar Area and Side Beach Area, in a wooden chest in the Mist Pillar
Area, and dropped from Purple Lurkers and Skeleton Lurkers in the Arena Area
ambush fight. The effect of Red Eco is to increase attack power. Under the
influence of Red Eco, Jak can knock down a vertical bone bridge or kill a
Skeleton Lurker with one punch.

Yellow Eco - This form of Eco is not in the Demo. From watching the preview
video, it appears to be similar to the Red Eco but instead of increasing your
attack's power it increases the range. When Jak punches, a ball of Yellow Eco
power will shoot from his fist.

Dark Eco - This form of Eco is toxic. Contact with a box of Dark Eco will cause
the box to explode and take 1 unit of health. Contact with the Dark Eco in the
Dark Eco pool in the Arena Area will kill Jak.

7. FAQs
=======
Here are some questions about the demo:

Q. Can you use the boat in the Staring Beach Area?
A. Not in the Demo, only in the full game.

Q. How long is the demo?
A. A built-in timeout timer (probably geared toward store demo units) gives you
a little over 15 minutes.

Q. Is there any way to stop the Demo's timeout timer?
A. As of yet, no. If and when a Gameshark code comes out (which I seriously
doubt for just a demo with the full game coming so soon), I will include it.

Q. When I get around 90 Orbs, Daxter says something about getting a power cell.
What is he talking about?
A. His remark has no bearing on the Demo. From what I can tell from the Behind
The Scenes video.. in the full game, there is a poor elf wearing a barrel who
asks for 90 Orbs to "get back on his feet". He then promises the duo a power
cell in exchange for this favor.

Q. How can I catch the Sculptor's Muse?
A. This is what I have found to be the easiest: Pay attention to the Muse's
route. There are a couple places where he can be caught relatively easily. On
the stairstep platforms at the top and bottom of the long backbone bridge, the
Muse takes his time to hop on every step. By skipping steps or hopping down on
him from above, you can catch him or get close enough to make a quick dash
after him with the Punch button.

Q. How many lives do I get?
A. In the demo, there are unlimited lives. However, there is still the timeout
timer which limits the amount one can get done in one session.

Q. How do I activate the Blue Eco platform?
A. First, make sure you knock the vertical bone bridge to the Mist Pillar Area
into place. Notice there is a piece of Blue Eco at both ends of the bridge and
one piece of Blue Eco on a platform just below the Mist Pillar Area end of the
bridge; you will need all three. Then clear the Skeleton Lurker and Mud Lurker
from the path (the Purple Lurker is optional). Once the path is clear, start at
the Sculptor's Muse Area end of the vertical bone bridge and collect all three
Blue Eco pieces then make a beeline for the Blue Eco Platform. It will activate
on contact if you have Blue Eco power remaining.

Q. How do I activate the Blue Eco Device?
A. First, clear the area around the Device: there are 4 Purple Lurkers, 1
Skeleton Lurker, and 2 Mud Lurkers in the area we'll be working in. Then, go to
the ribcage tunnel and follow it toward the beach.. there are two steps down to
the beach where there's another Purple Lurker that aren't very visible at first
glance. On both steps there are pieces of Blue Eco.. so grab both, run up to
grab the third piece of Blue Eco by the vertical bone bridge, jump and spin
across the mud puddle, then run for the Blue Eco Device. The top of the Blue
Eco Device should raise before you make contact. 15 more Orbs are now yours.

Q. Is it possible to get all 8 Power Cells in the time limit? Is it possible to
get 100% within the time limit?
A. Yes, it is definitely possible to get all 8 Power Cells within the time
limit. Given that you need all 7 Scout Flies to get all 8 Power Cells, the
completion percentage would be over 90% (how far over depends on how many Orbs
Jak collected.. I've gotten 96.1% myself). As for 100%, it would be EXTREMELY
difficult if it is possible, requiring the utmost efficiency in collecting Orbs
and a very quick capture of the elusive Sculptor's Muse.
