Rival battle #3[edit]

His Abra has no offensive attacks, so use a weaker Pokémon in your party to defeat it for XP. Rattata can be defeated by Low Kick or Double Kick, but beware of Hyper Fang.

Cerulean City Gym[edit]

You might want to wait with the gym battle after you've visited Bill, since Misty can be a tough opponent at this point of the game. After you beat Misty you will be able to teach TM03 Water Pulse, to a Pokémon. You will also be able to use HM01 Cut outside of battle.

Misty has two Pokémon: Staryu and Starmie. Staryu should be piece of cake, it falls easily to couple attacks and isn't too strong. Starmie is however going to be tough one to beat: it has very powerful stats at this point, its Water Pulse does major damage (and has chance of confusing your Pokémon) and it can heal itself by using Recover.

  • If you have Ivysaur, first use Leech Seed and then attack with Razor Leaf. Leech Seed steals HP from Starmie and heals your Pokémon at the same time. You can also use Sleep Powder to put Starmie asleep.
  • Pikachu learns Thunderbolt at level 26, which is a powerful Electric-type move. It easily takes Starmie down in one or two hits.
  • Wartortle learns a Dark-type move Bite at level 19. Since Starmie is part Psychic type, it's weak against Dark-type moves. Wartortle has decent defenses to take incoming attacks, and he also resists Water Pulse. Similarly, Zubat learns Bite at level 16.
  • You can get Magikarp and evolve it into Gyarados at level 20. With Bite it should take one or two hits.
  • If you don't own any of these Pokémon, save the gym for later when you have Pokémon leveled up enough. In Leaf Green, you can also catch Bellsprout, which can be found on routes 5 and 6. Fire Red yields Oddish in the same route, which is less powerful, but can still give you a slight edge.

Bike Shop[edit]

You may buy a bike from the shop at the southwest corner of the city. However, it costs Pokebuck.png1,000,000, which is more money than you are capable of holding. In Vermilion City, you will receive a Bike Voucher that you can exchange in this store for a free bike.

Trades[edit]

At the house west of the PokéCenter there is an old man who will trade Pokémon with you. You will get a Jynx at the same level as the Poliwhirl you have given. You won't be able to do this trade until much later in the game, after you get the Good Rod or the Super Rod.

Trade For

#124 Jynx
Pokemon 124Jynx.png
There are few Ice Pokemon in Fire Red and Leaf Green, but Jynx is arguably one of the best. With Ice/Psychic types and above average stats, Jynx can become quite the sweeper for your team, holding a stronger defense than Alakazam and better Spc. Atk than Hypno.

Unfortunately, while Jynx has a decent moveset with Ice Punch and Lovely Kiss, it learns no Psychic moves on its own, so you'll have to teach it TM's such as Psychic if you want to use it in this way.

Items[edit]

  • Rare Candy (Hidden behind the house in the north west corner of the city, between two flowers)
  • Powder Jar (Given to you by the old man in the right of the two northern houses, but only if you already have at least one berry)
  • Fame Checker (Given to you by your Rival after you fight him)
  • TM 03 Water Pulse (Given to you by Misty after you beat her)
  • TM 28 Dig (Given to you by the TR Grunt after you beat him)
