At a young age Kazuya was harshly trained by his father & harassed by his adoptive brother Lee Chaolan , [[Heihachi Mishima]], but was cared by his mother, Kazumi Mishima and his grandfather Jinpachi Mishima. When Kazuya was 5, tragedy struck when his mother was murdered and his grandfather was trapped beneath Hon Maru (the Mishima estate), by Heihachi. Later, Heihachi threw Kazuya off a cliff, claiming if Kazuya was his son, he would climb back, but Heihachi never heard of Kazuya past that point until the events of the first game. Kazuya was rescued by [[Jun Kazama]], a child who lived in the woods. Jun and Kazuya continued to grow up together. A year before the events of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 1, Kazuya entered a fight club and met [[Paul Phoenix]], the two fought, but it ended in a draw. But Paul told him to settle the score in an upcoming KOIF tournament.
